Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 7, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Backed by three homers, Dock Ellis made an impressive A. L. debut by pitching the Yankees to a 7-1 victory over the Orioles. Willie Randolph, who was obtained from the Pirates along with Ellis, hit one of the Yankees' homers. The others were blasted by Graig Nettles and Roy White.

Red Sox 7, Indians 4 at Boston (day game):
Breaking a 4-4 tie, the Red Sox scored on a double by Denny Doyle and single by Fred Lynn in the fifth inning to lead the way to a 7-4 victory over the Indians before a home opening crowd of 32,127 at Fenway Park. Carlton Fisk helped the Red Sox pull away with a round-tripper in the sixth.

Brewers 1, Tigers 0 at Detroit (day game):
With Jim Slaton pitching his second straight shutout, the Brewers defeated the Tigers, 1-0, on an unearned run in the ninth inning. With a Detroit opening-night crowd of 48,612 on hand, Sixto Lezcano singled and stole second. Gorman Thomas was safe on an error by Aurelio Rodriguez. After Rusty Staub dropped a fly ball by Robin Yount that was scored as a hit, loading the bases, Charlie Moore lofted a sacrifice fly to drive in the game's lone run.

Royals 7, Angels 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Off to the worst start in their history, the Angels suffered their fourth straight defeat, losing to the Royals, 7-4, before a Kansas City opening-night crowd of 26,516. Andy Hassler, who started for the Angels, drew his 12th straight defeat since beating the Royals, 12-1, last April 29. The Royals erupted for four runs in the third inning, two scoring on a single by Hal McRae, and put the game away when Amos Otis tripled to drive in another pair in the seventh.

White Sox 4, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Rich Gossage, winner of The Sporting News award as the A.L.'s Fireman of the Year last season, made his first start since July 5, 1974, and pitched the White Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Twins. The game was tied, 1-1, until the eighth inning when the White Sox broke away with three runs on two errors and three hits.

Rangers 3, A's 1 at Texas (night game):
Southpaw Steve Barr, obtained from the Red Sox in the Fergie Jenkins deal, allowed only four hits and pitched the Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. Juan Beniquez, also obtained from the Red Sox, started things going in the first inning when he singled and scored from first base on a long single by Mike Hargrove. A walk, single by Jeff Burroughs and grounder by Roy Howell added a second run. Jim Sundberg homered in the second before Sal Bando saved the A's from being shutout with a circuit clout in the seventh.

Reds 6, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
The Reds were slow in getting their attack underway, but finally erupted for five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Braves, 6-1, before an Atlanta opening night crowd of 37.973. Ken Henderson homered for the Braves in the first and Dave Concepcion tied the score with a drive in the seventh before the Reds exploded in the eighth.

Cubs 5, Mets 4 at Chicago (day game):
Playing before 44,818, a record opening-day crowd for Wrigley Field, the Cubs scored in the ninth inning on a triple by Manny Trillo and single by Rick Monday to defeat the Mets, 5-4. After Trillo's triple, the Mets issued two intentional passes to load the bases and retired Tim Hosley on a pop-up, but Monday lifted the winning single into short center.

Astros 2, Giants 1 at Houston (night game):
Consecutive run-scoring singles by Skip Jutze and Roger Metzger in the eighth inning gave the Astros a 2-1 victory over the Giants. Bob Watson opened the inning with a single, took second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a fly. After an intentional pass to Greg Gross, Jutze and Metzger followed with their singles.

Padres 8, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
The largest opening-night crowd in the Dodgers' Los Angeles history, 52,703, saw the Padres explode for seven runs in the seventh inning to gain an 8-5 victory and snap a 12-game winning streak for Burt Hooton. Tito Fuentes kayoed Hooton with a two-run single that sent the Padres ahead, 3-1. After Stan Wall relieved, Willie Davis singled to load the bases and Dave Winfield hit a grand-slam homer.

Pirates 14, Cardinals 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A combination of 12 walks and 13 hits made it easy for the Pirates to clobber the Cardinals, 14-4, before a Pittsburgh opening-day crowd of 40,937. Dave Parker drove in five runs with a single, homer and sacrifice fly. Jerry Reuss stymied the Cardinals until the ninth inning, when they averted a shutout, three of their runs coming on a homer by Hector Cruz.
