Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 6, Red Sox 5 at Boston (day game):
Erupting for six runs, the Indians knocked out Fergie Jenkins in the sixth inning and defeated the Red Sox, 6-5. The Indians went into the stanza trailing, 4-0, but put together five hits, two walks and a balk. After the balk by Jenkins forced in the tying run, Alan Ashby singled for two RBIs to account for the Indians' victory.
Angels 7, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
The slugging of Ed Herrmann, who hit two homers, enabled the Angels to edge the Royals, 7-6, for their first victory of the season. Herrmann started with a solo shot in the second, but the Angels trailed, 5-3, going into the eighth when pinch-hitter Bill Melton drove in one run with a single and Herrmann followed with a three-run smash.
Twins 6, White Sox 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Joe Decker, who was the victim of a viral infection and other troubles last season, winning only one game, pitched the Twins to a 6-2 victory over the White Sox, working 7 2/3 innings and allowing five hits. The White Sox committed five errors. The Twins put the game away with four runs in the fifth, two scoring on a double by Rod Carew and two on a single by Larry Hisle.
Rangers 4, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
Completing a sweep of the three-game series, the Rangers defeated the Athletics, 4-2, behind the six-hit pitching of Gaylord Perry. At one stretch, Perry retired 12 men in order. The Rangers went ahead against Vida Blue with two runs in the fifth inning on a single by Roy Howell, a sacrifice, double by Jim Fregosi and single by Toby Harrah. A wild pitch by Blue enabled Lenny Randle to count what proved to be the Rangers' winning run in the seventh.
Cubs 6, Mets 5 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs, who signed Randy Hundley as a free agent earlier in the day, got quick dividends when the veteran catcher doubled in the seventh inning to ignite a three-run rally that beat the Mets, 6-5. Hundley counted on a single by Jose Cardenal. Bill Madlock followed with a triple to tie the score and Jerry Morales then singled to drive in the deciding run.
Astros 5, Giants 3 at Houston (night game):
Larry Dierker, who failed to retire a batter in the season opener against the Reds, pitched six effective innings and gained credit for the victory when the Astros defeated the Giants, 5-3. The Astros collected four of their runs in the second inning on a single by Greg Gross, double by Roger Metzger, single by Larry Milbourne, triple by Enos Cabell and a wild pitch.
Padres 3, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Dave Winfield and Hector Torres belted back-to-back homers in the second inning and Randy Jones took it from there to pitch the Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Dodgers. The loss, charged to Don Sutton, was the fourth in a row for the Dodgers, who scored their lone run in the sixth on singles by Ted Sizemore, Steve Garvey and Ron Cey.
Phillies 8, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
Jim Lonborg, winning for the first time since last July 23, pitched the Phillies to an 8-2 victory over the Expos before a Montreal home-opening crowd of 21,199. Dick Allen, Garry Maddox and Bob Boone each drove in two runs in support of Lonborg, who allowed six hits in his route-going performance.
