White Sox 8, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
Buddy Bradford batted in three runs with a homer, two doubles and a single and Brian Downing knocked in two other runs with a homer and single to pace the White Sox to an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox. Clay Carroll, winning reliever for the Reds against the Red Sox in the seventh game of the 1975 World Series before being traded to the White Sox, picked up where he left off in the Series. Replacing Bart Johnson with one man on base and none out in the sixth, Carroll blanked the Red Sox the rest of the way on a yield of three hits.

Angels 5, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Although walking five, Nolan Ryan struck out nine and yielded only four hits while pitching the Angels to a 5-1 victory over the Royals. Bruce Bochte clinched the decision for Ryan, knocking in two runs with a single in the third inning.

Yankees 11, Twins 4 at New York (day game):
After playing two seasons at Shea Stadium, where they shared quarters with the Mets, the Yankees returned to rebuilt Yankee Stadium and proceeded to wallop the Twins, 11-4, before an enthusiastic crowd of 52,613, The turnout was largest for a Yankee home opener in 30 years. The Twins got off to a 4-0 lead before the Yankees went on a rally that reached a climax with six runs in the eighth inning, including two-run singles by Mickey Rivers and Chris Chambliss.

Braves 10, Reds 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Two new Braves, Ken Henderson and Lee Lacy, drove in three runs apiece to help pin a 10-5 defeat on the previously unbeaten Reds. Jerry Royster, also a new member of the Atlanta cast, contributed four hits to the victory.

Mets 10, Cubs 8 at Chicago (day game):
Dave Kingman smashed two homers, cracking his second with two men on base in the ninth inning, to power the Mets to a 10-8 victory over the Cubs. Kingman's first homer followed a walk to John Milner in the second. Then in the ninth with the Cubs leading, 8-7, Milner and Del Unser singled and Kingman belted his game-winning homer.

Expos 8, Phillies 5 at Montreal (day game):
Held to one baserunner in the first three innings, the Expos knocked out Jim Kaat in the fourth, scored six runs and defeated the Phillies, 8-5. Tim Foli batted in two tallies with a double after Ron Reed replaced Kaat. The Phillies cut into the Expos' lead, but Mike Jorgensen clinched the verdict by hitting a homer with Jerry White on base in the seventh inning.

Pirates 9, Cardinals 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Pirates piled up five runs in the first inning and then exploded for four more on two homers in the seventh to defeat the Cardinals, 9-3. With two men on base in the seventh, Al Hrabosky took the mound for the Cards and was tagged for consecutive circuit clouts by Al Oliver and Willie Stargell.
