Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Backed by a 13-hit attack, Luis Tiant gained his third straight victory when the Red Sox defeated the White Sox, 9-2. Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk whacked homers for the Red Sox, Yaz' blow coming with two men on base.

Indians 3, A's 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Bombed in his first two starts, Dennis Eckersley turned around and pitched the Indians to a 3-0 victory over the Athletics, who were shut out for the first time in 66 games. Eckersley, last year's A.L. Rookie Pitcher of the Year, yielded only two hits. Before the game, he had an ERA of 23.63.

Tigers 7, Rangers 6 at Detroit (day game):
Willie Horton not only hit a three-run homer but also singled to set up the run that gave the Tigers a 7-6 victory over the Rangers. Horton homered in the second when the Tigers counted five times. After the Rangers battled back to tie the score, Alex Johnson drew a walk in the seventh. Horton followed with a single, sending Johnson to third, and Rusty Staub then hit a sacrifice fly to produce the deciding marker.

Brewers 4, Angels 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers rallied for three runs in the eighth inning, two of them resulting from an error by Orlando Ramirez, to defeat the Angels, 4-2. Don Money doubled and scored on an infield hit by George Scott and sacrifice fly by Darrell Porter to knot the count at 2-2. Then, after a double by Sixto Lezcano, Kurt Bevacqua grounded to Ramirez, who threw wildly to first base, allowing Scott and Lezcano to score.

Royals 3, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
A homer by Buck Martinez and two sacrifice flies carried the Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Yankees and handed Catfish Hunter his third defeat in four decisions this season. Two singles, a bunt and sacrifice fly by Jim Wohlford produced the Royals' initial tally in the third. After Martinez homered in the sixth, the Royals loaded the bases and counted what proved to be their winning run on a fly by Hal McRae. Chris Chambliss and Lou Piniella hit homers for the Yankees, who played their first night game in rebuilt Yankee Stadium.

Astros 3, Mets 1 at Houston (night game):
Cesar Cedeno drove in all three of the Astros' runs to account for a 3-1 victory over the Mets. A triple by Enos Cabell and infield out by Cedeno produced the initial tally in the fourth inning. Then in the seventh, Cabell walked and Cedeno homered for the winning margin.

Cubs 4, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
With two out, consecutive singles by Jerry Morales, Andre Thornton and Manny Trillo scored a run in the 11th inning and gave the Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers.

Expos 5, Reds 4 at Montreal (day game):
The Reds, after scoring three unearned runs, came back with an error of their own to hand a 5-4 victory to the Expos. The Reds went ahead in the seventh, 4-2, with their tainted trio. In the eighth, the Expos began their rally with singles by Jim Dwyer, Mike Jorgensen and Larry Parrish to load the bases. Pete Mackainin then singled, driving in two runs, and when Dave Concepcion dropped the relay from the outfield, Parrish counted what proved to be the winning tally.

Braves 6, Phillies 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Six walks in the ninth inning enabled the Braves to score five runs on two hits to defeat the Phillies, 6-5. With the Phillies leading, 5-1, Gene Garber gave up a single by Tom Paciorek to open the ninth and passed Cito Gaston and Rowland Office to load the bases. Tug McGraw relieved and his control was worse. Rod Gilbreath walked to force in one run and Vic Correll doubled to drive in two men. After Darrell Evans popped up, Ken Henderson was passed intentionally, but Lee Lacy also walked to force in the tying tally. Then after Biff Pocoroba popped up, Paciorek, up for a second time, walked to force in the deciding run.

Padres 5, Cardinals 1 at San Diego (night game):
Randy Jones' four-hit pitching and four RBIs by Dave Winfield combined to give the Padres a 5-1 victory over the Cardinals. Winfield batted in two runs with a double in the third inning and two more with a single in the fifth.

Giants 7, Pirates 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Two homers by Gary Matthews and one by Derrel Thomas supplied the Giants' chief power in a 7-3 victory over the Pirates. With the score tied, 3-3, Thomas hit his homer in the seventh inning. Bobby Murcer singled and Matthews then hit his second homer of the game to clinch the outcome.
