Today's scores and summaries:

A's 8, Indians 7 at Cleveland (day game):
With two out in the ninth inning, Claudell Washington walked and Joe Rudi smashed his first homer of the season to power the Athletics to an 8-7 victory over the Indians.

Rangers 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
The Rangers rallied in the last three innings, capping their scoring with an unearned run, to defeat the Tigers, 5-4. The Rangers' first two runs came on a homer by Tom Grieve in the seventh, marking the first round-tripper off Tiger pitching this season. After tying the score at 3-3 in the eighth, the Rangers loaded the bases in the ninth. Gene Clines singled, driving in Dave Moates, and when Rusty Staub overran the ball, Roy Smalley also scored what proved to be the winning run because Ben Oglivie hit a pinch-homer in the Tigers' half of the final frame.

Twins 2, Orioles 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Dan Ford hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 14th inning to carry the Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Orioles. Luis Gomez singled and Danny Thompson doubled for his fourth hit of the game, Gomez stopping at third. After an intentional pass to Lyman Bostock, Ford came through with his sacrifice fly.

Yankees 9, Royals 8 at New York (day game):
The Royals were deprived of what could have been their winning run on an appeal play in the eighth inning and then lost to the Yankees in the 11th, 9-8. In the eighth, Jim Wohlford singled and George Brett walked. John Mayberry then singled, apparently scoring Wohlford, but the runner failed to tag third en route to the plate and was called out when the Yankees appealed. In the 11th, Roy White singled, Thurman Munson was hit by a pitch and Chris Chambliss singled for the Yankees' winning run.

Mets 7, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
In brilliant form, Tom Seaver allowed only three singles and pitched the Mets to a 7-1 victory over the Astros. In addition, the Mets' Cy Young Award winner also batted in two runs with a single in the eighth inning.

Dodgers 2, Cubs 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A loser of his first three starts, Don Sutton got back in the groove and pitched the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. The Dodgers took advantage of an error by Cubs' starter Bill Bonham to score in the first and added what proved to be their winning run in the fourth when Ron Cey tripled and Joe Ferguson doubled.

Reds 6, Expos 4 at Montreal (day game):
After scoring their first four runs on homers, the Reds turned to a single in the 11th inning and counted twice to defeat the Expos, 6-4. Joe Morgan homered with two men on base and Mike Lum added a solo swat for the Reds' initial tallies of the game. However in the 11th, Dave Concepcion came up with the bases loaded and rapped a single to produce the victory.

Phillies 10, Braves 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
A pair of five-run innings carried Philadelphia to a 10-5 victory over the Braves. The first outburst came in the third inning at the expense of Andy Messersmith and included the first grand-slam homer of Greg Luzinski's major league career. Messersmith escaped defeat when the Braves rallied to tie the score, but Elias Sosa failed in relief in the Phillies' second five-run outburst in the eighth. Luzinski doubled and Mike Schmidt hit his eighth homer in six games to break a 5-5 tie. Larry Bowa drove in two runs with a single to cap the rally.

Padres 4, Cardinals 3 at San Diego (night game):
Cap Night brought out a crowd of 50,569 and the Padres capped the night by scoring in the ninth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 4-3. Pinch-hitter Gene Locklear drew a walk to open the ninth. After a sacrifice by Jerry Turner, Tito Fuentes singled for his fourth hit of the game to drive in pinch-runner Enzo Hernandez.

Giants 3, Pirates 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Although collecting 10 hits, the Pirates were able to score only once and lost to the Giants, 3-1. The Giants, held to six hits, counted on a triple by Von Joshua and a fly by Derrel Thomas in the first inning. In the third, the Giants loaded the bases on two hits and a walk and added their two other runs on a wild pitch by Jim Rooker and sacrifice fly by Chris Speier.
