Today's scores and summaries:

A's 9, Indians 1 at Cleveland (day game):
After winning the previous day's game with a two-run homer in the ninth inning, Joe Rudi hit for the circuit again with a man on base to start the Athletics off to a 9-1 victory over the Indians.

Twins 7, Orioles 2 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins broke a tight game apart when Larry Hisle, who was batting only .162, snapped his slump with a three-run homer in the eighth inning to a clinch 7-2 victory over the Orioles.

Mets 4, Astros 2 at Houston (day game):
A run that scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning sent the Mets en route to a 4-2 victory over the Astros. With the score tied, Ed Kranepool singled and Dave Kingman beat out a surprise bunt. Following an infield out, the Astros' Joe Niekro unleashed a wild pitch, allowing Kranepool to score the tie-breaking tally. Ron Hodges followed with a single for an insurance run.

Dodgers 5, Cubs 4 at Los Angeles (day game):
After failing to hold a 4-1 lead, the Dodgers scored an unearned run in the 10th inning and defeated the Cubs, 5-4. Henry Cruz hit his first major league homer, connecting with two men on base, to pace the Dodgers to their early advantage. After the Cubs came back to tie the score, Ted Sizemore was safe on an error by Andre Thornton in the 10th. John Hale sacrificed. The Cubs then walked Steve Garvey intentionally, hoping to set up a double play, but Ron Cey wrecked the move with a single which drove in the winning run.

Reds 7, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Making his first start of the season, Don Gullett allowed only five hits and combined with Pat Darcy to pitch the Reds to a 7-0 victory over the Expos. Johnny Bench and Dave Concepcion smashed homers to spice the Reds' attack.

Braves 3, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Braves, after scoring quickly in the first inning, got two more runs on a homer by Dave May in the sixth and defeated the Phillies, 3-2. Rowland Office tripled and Jerry Royster grounded out for the initial tally. May's decisive homer followed a single by Jim Wynn. Darrell Evans of the Braves walked in the eighth and set a modern N. L. record for drawing a pass in his 13th consecutive game. Joe Morgan of the Reds held the former mark.

Cardinals 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
Manager Red Schoendienst's shakeup of his lineup produced results when the Cardinals defeated the Padres, 3-1. Willie Crawford, who went to right field while Reggie Smith moved to third base, knocked in two of the Cards' runs with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and a homer in the fifth. Ron Fairly, who played first base, walked later in the fifth and counted the Cards' final run on a double by Don Kessinger.

Pirates 3, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
The Pirates were able to snap their four-game losing streak when John Candelaria pitched a two-hitter and shut out the Giants, 3-0. The Pirates scored all their runs in the fifth inning, the first coming on a homer by Willie Stargell. Dave Parker and Richie Hebner followed with singles and both scored when Frank Taveras hit an apparent triple, but the batter was called out on appeal for failing to tag second base. He received credit for two RBIs, but the hit went into the box score as just a single.
