Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 8, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
The Brewers, who failed to hold a 5-0 lead, came back with a three-run rally in the ninth to defeat the White Sox, 8-5. Gorman Thomas singled and was forced by Charlie Moore, but Bill Sharp was safe on an error and Robin Yount singled to drive in the tie-breaking run. Sharp took third, Yount went to second on the throw and both scored on a single by George Scott.

Rangers 6, Red Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
A three-run homer by Jeff Burroughs in the fifth inning gave Nelson Briles plenty of working room and enabled the righthander to pitch the Rangers to a 6-1 victory over the Red Sox.

Dodgers 4, Cardinals 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
With Bill Buckner injured, Glenn Burke made his first start in the Dodgers' outfield and contributed two hits to a 4-0 victory over the Cardinals. The rookie drove in one run and scored one in support of Don Sutton's five-hit hurling.

Astros 3, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
Blanked for seven innings, the Astros aroused themselves in the eighth and defeated the Expos, 3-1. Larry Milbourne singled with one out to start the rally, advanced on an infield out and scored on a single by Cesar Cedeno. Bob Watson then doubled, driving in Cedeno to send the Astros ahead, 2-1. Roger Metzger batted an insurance run across the plate in ninth.

Mets 2, Braves 0 at New York (day game):
With Tom Seaver pitching a five-hitter, the Mets defeated the Braves, 2-0, for their sixth straight victory. The Mets collected only one hit off Phil Niekro in the first 5 1/3 innings, but then got going with a walk to Felix Millan. Del Unser followed with a single. Ed Kranepool struck out, but Dave Kingman singled to drive in Unser for his 20th RBI of the season. The extra run then scored on an error.

Padres 9, Cubs 5 at San Diego (day game):
Jerry Turner drove in two runs with a double and Enzo Hernandez added two more with a single as the Padres broke a 5-5 tie in the eighth inning to defeat the Cubs, 9-5. Dave Winfield singled and Gene Locklear and Fred Kendall walked ahead of Turner's double before Hernandez hit his single for the final two tallies.
