Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] A's 6, Orioles 2 (day game) / Orioles 4, A's 3 at Baltimore (day game):
Making his first appearance in a Baltimore uniform, Reggie Jackson went hitless in two official trips but drove in a run to help beat his former Oakland team, 4-3, after the Athletics had defeated the Orioles in the opening game of a doubleheader, 6-2. Vida Blue pitched for the A's in the lidlifter and ended a personal string of three losses. Billy Williams and Joe Rudi homered. In the nightcap, the A's held a 3-2 lead until the sixth inning when Tony Muser singled, Lee May doubled and Jackson grounded out to drive in the tying run. Ken Singleton then hit a sacrifice fly for the winning tally.

[DH] Indians 12, Angels 3 (day game) / Angels 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Taking advantage of an error, the Indians broke a close game apart and breezed to a 12-3 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Angels came back behind the hitting of Bobby Bonds and Jerry Remy to win the nightcap, 5-4. With the score tied, 3-3, the Indians loaded the bases in the fifth inning of the lidlifter and counted two runs when Bruce Bochte threw wildly to the plate after fielding a grounder by Rick Manning. Duane Kuiper squeezed in a run and Buddy Bell homered to make the inning good for four runs. Rico Carty added two more with a circuit clout in the seventh. In the nightcap, Bonds drove in two runs for the Angels with a single in the first inning and Remy accounted for a pair with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and single in the sixth.

Royals 2, Yankees 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Held hitless for eight innings, the Royals broke Rudy May's spell in the ninth and then defeated the Yankees in the 11th, 2-1. Amos Otis ended May's no-hit bid with a double to open the ninth. The Yankees, who were leading, 1-0, then brought in Sparky Lyle, but an infield out and sacrifice fly by John Mayberry enabled the Royals to tie the score. In the 11th, Jim Wohlford singled, Amos Otis walked, George Brett sacrificed and Wohlford beat the throw home when Mayberry grounded to first baseman Chris Chambliss.

Rangers 6, Red Sox 3 at Texas (day game):
Completing a sweep of the four-game series, the Rangers used three home runs to defeat the Red Sox, 6-3. After the Rangers fell behind, 3-0, Tom Grieve hit for the circuit in the fifth inning and Mike Hargrove connected with a man on base in the sixth. Then in the eighth, after Lenny Randle and Hargrove hit singles, Jeff Burroughs belted a homer to provide the Rangers' winning blow.

Phillies 8, Braves 2 at Atlanta (day game):
A pair of four-run innings enabled the Phillies gain an 8-2 victory over the Braves, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. In the second, the Phillies benefited from the wildness of Andy Messersmith, loading the bases on two walks around a single by Jay Johnstone. Messersmith then passed Terry Harmon to force in one run and uncorked a wild pitch to allow another to score before Mike Schmidt doubled to drive in two more runs. In the ninth, the Phillies' final four counted on run-scoring singles by Tommy Hutton and Ollie Brown, an error and a sacrifice fly by Garry Maddox.

Expos 8, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
With two out in the 16th inning, the Expos erupted for four runs and defeated the Reds, 8-4. Don Stanhouse, pitching in relief for the Expos, sparked the rally with a double. After an intentional pass to Jerry White and another walk to Nate Colbert, Barry Foote singled to drive in two runs and Pepe Mangual doubled to plate another pair.

Dodgers 3, Cardinals 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
A perfect bunt by pinch-hitter Bill Buckner scored Steve Garvey with the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning as the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals, 3-1, for their ninth straight victory. Garvey singled, stole second and stopped at third on a bloop single by John Hale before Buckner caught the Cards off guard with his bunt. Garvey iced the victory with a homer in the eighth.

[DH] Astros 5, Mets 4 (day game) / Mets 7, Astros 4 at New York (day game):
A single by Larry Milbourne for his second RBI of the game scored Wilbur Howard in the ninth inning and gave the Astros a 5-4 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the batting of Del Unser, who drove in three runs, helped the Mets win the nightcap, 7-4. The Astros knocked out Mickey Lolich in the fifth inning of the lidlifter and took a 4-3 lead, but Ed Kranepool tied the score with a homer in the sixth. However in the ninth, Greg Gross singled and gave way on the paths to Howard. After advancing on a sacrifice and taking third following a long fly, Howard scored the Astros' winning run on Milbourne's single. In the nightcap, Unser singled for one of the Mets' four runs in the sixth inning and then clinched the decision by hitting a homer with a man on base in the eighth.

Padres 4, Pirates 2 at San Diego (day game):
Getting the benefit of a three-run homer by Doug Rader, Randy Jones brought his record to 5-1 by pitching the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Pirates. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Padres exploded for all their runs on triples by Jerry Turner and Willie Davis, an intentional pass to Willie McCovey and Rader's homer.

[DH] Cubs 6, Giants 5 (day game) / Cubs 6, Giants 5 at San Francisco (day game):
Jose Cardenal collected six hits in seven trips in the opener and, after starting the nightcap on the bench, returned to action with one more hit in two at-bats as the Cubs swept a pair of overtime games from the Giants, each by the score of 6-5. In the first game, Cardenal hit four singles, a double and a homer. The single for his sixth hit scored Dave Rosello with two out in the 14th inning and brought the Cubs their victory. In the nightcap, the Cubs loaded the bases in the 11th on two singles around a walk. Randy Hundley then batted for Darold Knowles and hit a sacrifice fly to complete the Cubs' sweep.
