Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 3, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Capitalizing on two errors, the White Sox defeated the Orioles, 3-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Wilbur Wood. In the second inning, Brian Downing walked and Buddy Bradford beat out an infield hit. Bucky Dent grounded to Ken Holtzman, who threw wildly, allowing Downing to score. Bradford reached third and also crossed the plate when catcher Dave Duncan threw wildly to second in an attempt to head off a steal by Dent.

Royals 7, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
A homer by Amos Otis with two men on base climaxed a five-run outburst in the second inning and sent the Royals on their way to a 7-5 victory over the Red Sox. Buck Martinez doubled to drive in the Royals' first two runs and, after Jim Wohlford was hit by a pitch, Otis smashed his homer. The Royals' outfielder then supplied what proved to be the winning run by hitting another homer in the fifth.

Yankees 2, Angels 1 at California (night game):
One out apart, Roy White and Chris Chambliss drilled homers to power the Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Dock Ellis, with help from Sparky Lyle in the ninth, was a winner for the third straight time. The Angels scored in the first on a walk and singles by Bobby Bonds and Bill Melton. White tied the score with his homer off Frank Tanana in the sixth and, after Thurman Munson was retired, Chambliss came through with the winning blow.

Twins 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
With one out in the 10th inning, Butch Wynegar and Dan Ford hit consecutive homers off Bill Laxton to carry the Twins to a 5-4 victory over the Tigers. The blows put the Twins ahead, 5-3, and the Tigers then fell short with one run in their half on two walks and a single by Gary Sutherland for his fourth hit of the game.

Rangers 7, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Although Hank Aaron had a good day at bat for the Brewers, Toby Harrah came up with a better day to help the Rangers gain a 7-4 victory. Aaron hit his first homer of the season and 746th of his career, along with two singles. Harrah homered for the Rangers in the fourth inning and again in the fifth. Mike Hargrove also accounted for two RBIs with a single in the sixth when the Rangers scored four times to clinch the decision.

A's 8, Indians 4 at Oakland (night game):
Enjoying the best start of his career as a run-producer, Joe Rudi accounted for three RBIs to bring his early season's total to 26 as the Athletics defeated the Indians, 8-4. Rudi drove in his runs with two doubles and a single, boosting his batting average to .347.

Cardinals 8, Braves 7 at Atlanta (night game):
After falling behind, 7-4, the Cardinals rallied to tie the score and then defeated the Braves in the 12th inning, 8-7. A homer by Ted Simmons in the eighth and a double by Mike Anderson and single by Lou Brock in ninth knotted the count. In the 12th, Bake McBride singled and raced home on a double by Simmons.

Dodgers 9, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
Embarked on the club's longest winning streak since taking 13 in a row in 1965, the Dodgers posted their 10th straight victory, defeating the Cubs, 9-6. Henry Cruz drove in three runs with a homer and triple, while Ron Cey accounted for two with a homer. The Dodgers' best news came with the reappearance of Davey Lopes, who played in his first game this season and knocked in a run with a single in the fourth.

Mets 5, Reds 3 at New York (night game):
Although wild, walking seven batters, Tom Seaver was able to receive credit for the victory when the Mets defeated the Reds, 5-3. Fred Norman, the Reds' starter, also was wild, giving up two runs on four walks and an infield out in the second inning. In the next frame, Joe Torre singled and Dave Kingman hit his 10th homer to bring his RBI total to 23 in 23 games for the Mets' winning blow. Seaver was removed with one out in the seventh after loading the bases on a single by Pete Rose and two passes. But Skip Lockwood came in and struck out both Johnny Bench and Mike Lum to end the threat.

Phillies 5, Astros 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
A winner of only eight games and loser of six last season, Jim Lonborg brought his record to 3-0 by pitching the Phillies to a 5-0 victory over the Astros. Bobby Tolan broke the scoring ice with a homer in the second inning. The Phils added their other tallies in the eighth. After a walk and triple by Dave Cash produced one run, the Phils loaded the bases and Greg Luzinski cleared the sacks with a double.

Pirates 6, Giants 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates, who were trailing, 3-2, erupted for four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Giants, 6-5. Bill Robinson doubled and Willie Stargell followed with a homer to put the Pirates ahead. Their two other runs then counted on a triple by Dave Parker and singles by Richie Hebner, Mario Mendoza and Jerry Reuss, who batted in his own winning marker.
