Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, White Sox 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Jim Palmer allowed only two hits -- a single by leadoff batter Pat Kelly and another single with two out in the ninth by Ralph Garr -- while pitching the Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the White Sox. Both Orioles' runs off Rich Gossage in the eighth were unearned on singles by Paul Blair and Lee May, a wild throw by Jack Brohamer on a grounder by Reggie Jackson and a forceout by Tony Muser.

Royals 8, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
After Amos Otis hit his third homer in two games, Cookie Rojas stepped into the picture with three RBIs to help the Royals defeat the Red Sox, 8-4. Otis' homer in the fifth inning tied the score at 2-2. The Royals went ahead with a run in the sixth and took command with two more in the seventh on a single by Rojas with the bases loaded. After the Red Sox rallied for a pair in the eighth, the Royals finished the scoring with three runs in the ninth, one of them counting on a sacrifice fly by Rojas.

Yankees 10, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Tied in a duel with Catfish Hunter, 4-4, Nolan Ryan suddenly folded in the eighth inning when the Yankees exploded for six runs to defeat the Angels, 10-4. The Yankees built up a 4-0 lead with the aid of a two-run homer by Oscar Gamble, but the Angels rallied to tie the score in the sixth, three runs counting on a circuit clout by Rusty Torres. However in the eighth, Mickey Rivers and Thurman Munson each came through with two-run singles as the Yankees knocked out Ryan and handed the Angels their ninth defeat in the last 11 games.

Twins 8, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Driving in seven runs between them, Dan Ford and Craig Kusick led the Twins to an 8-2 victory over the Tigers. Ford knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the third inning and Kusick followed with a three-run homer. Ford then added two more tallies with a homer in the seventh.

Indians 3, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
With two out in the ninth inning, Alan Ashby batted in a pair of runs with a single to give the Indians a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. Rico Carty drew a walk from Rollie Fingers to start the stanza and, after one out, George Hendrick beat out an infield hit. Charlie Spikes flied out, but Ashby came through with his single driving in pinch runner Ron Pruitt from second and Hendrick, who put on all his speed and raced home from first on the two-out hit.

Cardinals 4, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Obtained from the Giants, Pete Falcone gained his first victory in a St. Louis uniform when the Cardinals shut out the Braves, 4-0. Falcone allowed only four hits in 7 1/3 innings before being smacked on the left leg by a line drive. Although the lefty wanted to continue, manager Red Schoendienst removed him from the game. Mike Proly and Al Hrabosky completed the shutout of the Braves, who suffered their ninth straight loss.

Dodgers 14, Cubs 12 at Chicago (day game):
With the aid of a 31-mile-an-hour wind, the Dodgers set a club record for homers with seven and extended their winning streak to 11 games by outslugging the Cubs, 14-12. Henry Cruz hit two homers and Ed Goodson, Bill Buckner, Ron Cey, Bill Russell and Steve Yeager rapped one apiece. The Dodgers scored in each of the first eight innings before being blanked in the ninth. The Cubs, who had two homers by Rick Monday, accounting for six runs, scored in six innings. The two-team total of scoring in 14 half-innings tied an N. L. record.

Padres 6, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
A sudden outburst in the sixth inning saw the Padres score four runs to defeat the Expos, 6-4. Willie McCovey hit a two-run homer for the Padres in the first, but the Expos held a 3-2 lead before the Padres began their rally with two out in the sixth. Tito Fuentes doubled and scored on a single by Willie Davis. Willie McCovey followed with a single and Doug Rader then won the game by smashing a three-run homer.

Reds 2, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Run-scoring singles by George Foster and Ken Griffey in the 11th inning gave the Reds a 2-0 victory over the Mets behind the seven-hit hurling of Gary Nolan and Rawly Eastwick. Nolan worked the first nine frames. In the 11th with Tom Hall on the mound in relief for the Mets, Joe Morgan walked and stole second with one away. After an intentional pass to Tony Perez, Foster singled to score Morgan and Griffey singled to drive in Perez.

Phillies 6, Astros 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies exploded for six runs in the sixth inning -- four on a grand slam by Bobby Tolan and two on another homer by Ollie Brown -- to defeat the Astros, 6-3.

Pirates 6, Giants 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Al Oliver, who had been out with a heel injury, made his first start in the Pirates' outfield since April 26 and collected three hits in three official trips, including a homer, to mark a 6-1 victory over the Giants. In the third, after Bruce Kison doubled and scored on a single by Richie Hebner, Oliver homered to make the inning good for three runs. Duffy Dyer added to the Pirates' total with a two-run smash in the fourth.
