Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Royals 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Al Bumbry, who seldom hits homers, came up with two out in the ninth inning and smashed a drive over the fence to give the Orioles a 4-3 victory over the Royals. The homer was Bumbry's first of the year. Brooks Robinson also hit his first homer of the year for the Orioles previously in the third.

Angels 5, Indians 4 at California (night game):
Homers by Bobby Bonds and Bill Melton on successive pitches in the eighth inning powered the Angels to a 5-4 victory and kept the Indians from setting an A. L. record for most consecutive games won in one opponent's park. The Indians had beaten the Angels 13 times in a row at Anaheim Stadium since July 17, 1973. Bonds' homer in the eighth followed a single by Jerry Remy and walk to Rusty Torres to tie the score. Melton then connected on Jackie Brown's next pitch to provide the Angels' winning run.

Tigers 5, White Sox 0 at Detroit (night game):
An infield hit by Ralph Garr in the fourth inning kept Ray Bare from racking up a possible no-hitter when the Tigers' righthander shut out the White Sox, 5-0. Pitching in 44-degree weather, Bare faced only 28 batters. He walked two, but picked one off first base and the other was erased on a double play. Second baseman Gary Sutherland made a diving stop of Garr's grounder in the fourth but had no chance to get the runner at first.

Brewers 4, Twins 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers erupted for four runs in the second inning and defeated the Twins, 4-3, behind the pitching of Jim Slaton and Eduardo Rodriguez. When Slaton gave up a single by Lyman Bostock to open the eighth, Rodriguez relieved and retired the last six batters in succession. In the Brewers' second, Darrell Porter and Sixto Lezcano singled and Bobby Darwin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Charlie Moore walked, forcing in the first run. Don Money singled, driving in a pair, and Robin Yount then singled to plate what proved to be the winning run.

Yankees 14, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
The Yankees scored seven unearned runs on six errors but really didn't need them in trouncing the Athletics, 14-4. The Yanks piled up 16 hits, including three by Thurman Munson, who also had a sacrifice fly.

Reds 3, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Jack Billingham recorded his 100th major league victory against 77 defeats with the help of Tony Perez, who broke out of an 0-for-18 slump with two singles and knocked in two runs to help the Reds triumph over the Cubs, 3-1.

Mets 6, Padres 2 at New York (night game):
Batting each time with a count of two strikes against him, Dave Kingman smashed a pair of homers and drove in five runs to power the Mets to a 6-2 victory over the Padres. Kingman's first homer of the game came in the first inning and followed a single by Joe Torre. The Mets' slugger connected for a second time in eighth after a double by Felix Millan and single by Torre.

Dodgers 10, Phillies 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ron Cey, Bill Russell and Steve Yeager each collected four hits as the rampaging Dodgers defeated the Phillies, 10-8, for their 12th straight victory. Cey knocked in five runs with a homer and single among his hits. Russell hit a double, triple and two singles, accounting for four RBIs. The Phillies' only weapon in reply was Bobby Tolan, who hit a homer, double and two singles, driving in four runs.

Pirates 3, Braves 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A bad start was enough to beat Andy Messersmith when the Pirates scored three runs in the first inning and defeated the Braves, 3-1, to extend the Atlanta club's losing streak to 11 games. With two out, Al Oliver started Messersmith's demise with a single. Willie Stargell then hit to the mound and when Messersmith threw wildly to first, Oliver scored. Dave Parker followed with a triple and Richie Zisk capped the inning with a single.

Astros 3, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
A winner for the fifth straight time since a season-opening loss to the Reds, J.R. Richard pitched the Astros to a 3-1 victory over the Cardinals. Jose Cruz, playing center field in place of Cesar Cedeno, who was out with a sprained ankle, batted in two of the Astros' runs with a pair of singles. His brother, Hector, homered for the Cardinals' tally in the seventh inning.
