Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 7, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (day game):
The Royals knocked out Jim Palmer in the third inning and scored five runs to defeat the Orioles, 7-4. The Royals put three singles together for a run in the first and then routed Palmer in the third with an outburst that included a two-run double by Bob Stinson and two-run single by Frank White.

Rangers 6, Red Sox 5 at Boston (day game):
A wild throw by Denny Doyle, attempting to complete a double play, enabled the Rangers to score two runs in the eighth inning and defeat the Red Sox, 6-5, extending their club record winning streak to eight games. The loss was the ninth in a row for the Red Sox. With the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, shortstop Steve Dillard fielded a grounder by Lenny Randle for a forceout at second, Jim Sundberg scoring, and when Doyle threw wildly to first, Roy Howell also crossed the plate with the winning run.

Angels 3, Indians 2 at California (day game):
Shut out for seven innings, the Angels finally rewarded Frank Tanana for his three-hit pitching by scoring three runs in the eighth to defeat the Indians, 3-2. The Angels also were held to three hits until they rallied against Fritz Peterson, starting with a double by Leroy Stanton. After a one-out walk to Ron Jackson, Paul Dade drove in a run with a single. Dave LaRoche replaced Peterson and retired Jerry Remy, but Rusty Torres tripled to drive in the Angels' tying and winning runs.

White Sox 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Although Wilbur Wood was credited with a 4-2 victory over the Tigers, the veteran southpaw of the White Sox suffered a broken left kneecap and may be sidelined for the rest of the season. The injury occurred in the sixth inning when Wood was hit by a line drive off the bat of Ron LeFlore.

Twins 6, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (day game):
A triple, walk, passed ball and wild throw gave the Twins two runs in the eighth inning and resulted in a 6-4 victory over the Brewers. With the score tied, 4-4, Butch Wynegar tripled and Dan Ford was handed an intentional pass. With Danny Thompson batting, Wynegar scored the tie-breaking run on a passed ball by Darrell Porter, Ford advancing to second. Ford then stole third and scored when Porter threw wildly into left field.

A's 4, Yankees 3 at Oakland (day game):
Catching the Yankees off guard, Sal Bando raced from first base to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning to bring a 4-3 victory to the Athletics. Bando walked and when Larry Lintz bunted, the Yankees left third base unprotected. Catfish Hunter raced over to cover but arrived too late to catch Bando. Bert Campaneris then sent Bando home with a sacrifice fly. The A's victory over Hunter was their first in five decisions with their former teammate.

Reds 14, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Reds twice hit three homers in one inning while demolishing the Cubs, 14-2. Tony Perez and George Foster opened the third inning with round-trippers and, after the Reds loaded the bases, Ken Griffey hit the first grand slam of his major league career. Pete Rose, Dan Driessen and Perez all hit homers in the fifth when the Reds added four runs. Backed by the bombardment, Pat Zachry gained his first major league victory.

[DH] Giants 4, Expos 2 (day game) / Expos 8, Giants 0 at Montreal (day game):
Although John Montefusco was kayoed in the eighth inning, the Giants ended their six-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Expos came back to win the nightcap, 8-0, behind the two-hit hurling of Steve Rogers. Gary Matthews homered and Willie Montanez had three hits for the Giants in the first game. Rogers, Tim Foli and Larry Parrish each knocked in two runs to lead the Expos' offense in the second game. Rogers' shutout and complete game both were the first to the credit of the Expos' staff this season.

Padres 4, Mets 0 at New York (day game):
The Padres, who had lost to Tom Seaver eight straight times since May 6, 1972, finally ended ace the righthander's mastery by defeating the Mets, 4-0. Brent Strom, one-time property of the Mets, pitched a two-hitter and Dave Winfield hit a two-run homer to mark the Padres' victory over Seaver, only their second in 20 career decisions against the Mets' three-time Cy Young Award winner.

Phillies 10, Dodgers 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
The rampaging Dodgers had their 12-game winning streak broken when the Phillies defeated Doug Rau, 10-3, ending the southpaw's string of 10 straight victories, including four this season. The Phillies had two big innings, starting with four runs in the first inning, including a homer by Greg Luzinski. Rau was kayoed in the fifth when the Phillies piled up five runs, two scoring on a single by Larry Bowa.

Pirates 5, Braves 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Braves' losing streak was extended to 13 games when the Pirates erupted for four runs in the fourth inning en route to a 5-2 victory, their sixth in a row. Dave Parker singled, Richie Zisk doubled and Manny Sanguillen singled for the first run. Another scored on a single by Mario Mendoza. Then, after a sacrifice by Jerry Reuss, Rennie Stennett knocked in two runs with a double.

Astros 10, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (day game):
The pitching of Larry Dierker and batting of Cliff Johnson helped the Astros defeat the Cardinals, 10-5. Johnson hit a homer, double and two singles, driving in three runs before hurting his ankle tripping over home plate in the seventh inning. Skip Jutze finished the game as catcher. With a 10-3 lead, the Astros brought Ken Forsch to the mound for some work in the ninth inning and the reliever, who had been sidelined since April 28 with a tender right elbow, had a rough time subduing the Cards, who rallied for three runs.
