Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 7, Rangers 5 at California (night game):
Playing in his first game since being recalled from the minors, Orlando Alvarez hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to enable the Angels to defeat the Rangers, 7-5. The Angels scored four runs in the third, but Alvarez' homer as the Angels' designated hitter proved decisive. Jeff Burroughs and Toby Harrah each homered with a man on base for the Rangers.

Red Sox 7, Indians 5 at Cleveland (night game):
A pre-game replacement for Fred Lynn, who injured his shoulder in practice, Rick Miller drove in three runs and scored two to pace the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Indians. Miller singled in the third to send in the first run and tripled along with Carl Yastrzemski when the Red Sox counted three times in the fifth. After the Indians pulled within one run at 4-3, the Red Sox scored three runs in the eighth. Miller drove in one with a single and circled the bases when his hit went through Rick Manning in center field for an error.

Royals 13, White Sox 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Continuing his fantastic streak, George Brett collected three hits in a game for the sixth straight time as the Royals romped over the White Sox, 13-2. John Mayberry and Hal McRae also had three hits apiece in the Royals' 16-hit attack.

Orioles 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Aided by three unearned runs, Jim Palmer pitched the Orioles to a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. Mark Belanger was safe on an error by Don Money with one away in the first inning and scored on a double by Reggie Jackson. After the second out, Andres Mora singled to drive in Jackson. Another error by Money then led to a second pair of tainted tallies in the fourth. Ken Singleton reached base on a wild throw by Money and runs followed on a double by Dave Duncan, sacrifice fly by Brooks Robinson and single by Paul Blair.

Tigers 3, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Shattering one of baseball's theories to smithereens, Rusty Staub smashed a three-run homer in the eighth inning to power the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. With one away in the eighth, Ron LeFlore singled and stole second, but was out at third on a grounder by Mickey Stanley, who reached second on the play. With Rudy May on the mound, the Yankees passed Willie Horton intentionally, electing to let their southpaw pitch to Staub, who bats lefthanded, but the Tigers' slugger proved that move was a mistake with a long homer on a 2-and-2 pitch.

Giants 9, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
The Giants, who ended their string of 36 consecutive scoreless innings, rallied for five runs in the ninth to defeat the Cubs, 9-5, and snap a four-game losing streak. The Giants ended their scoring drouth with a run in the fourth on singles by Chris Speier, Willie Montanez and Steve Ontiveros. However, the Cubs were leading, 5-4, going into the ninth when the Giants began their comeback with a double by Derrel Thomas and triple by Montanez to tie the score. Ontiveros singled for the go-ahead run. After a single by Marc Hill, Bobby Murcer tripled, driving in two runs, and then scored himself on an error to clinch the decision.
