Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, Brewers 4 at Boston (day game):
Held to three hits in the first six innings, the Red Sox suddenly exploded for eight runs in the seventh to defeat the Brewers, 9-4. Jim Colborn, who started for the Brewers, went into the inning with a 3-1 lead but was kayoed when Carlton Fisk led off with a double and Bernie Carbo singled. Eduardo Rodriguez, in relief, passed two batters, forcing in a run, and two others scored on a sacrifice fly by Fred Lynn and single by Rick Burleson. That brought on Ray Sadecki, who was greeted with a three-run homer by pinch-hitter Jim Rice. With two out, Carl Yastrzemski walked and Fisk, up for a second time, also homered to complete the onslaught.

[DH] Twins 5, Angels 2 (night game) / Twins 15, Angels 5 at California (night game):
After Bert Blyleven struck out 12 and posted a 5-2 victory, the Twins went on a scoring rampage and walloped the Angels, 15-5, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader. The Twins collected 14 hits in the lidlifter with a two-run homer by Butch Wynegar among their blows. In the nightcap, the Twins gathered only three more hits, 17, but their production was more damaging. Dan Ford drove in six runs with a homer, double and sacrifice fly, while Phil Roof accounted for four RBIs with two doubles and a single. Bobby Bonds hit a grand-slam homer for the Angels off Pete Redfern, who was chased in the sixth inning but gained credit for the victory in his first major league appearance.

Tigers 2, Indians 1 at Detroit (day game):
Making his first major league start, Mark Fidrych yielded only two hits and pitched the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Indians. The rookie righthander put only one man on base by a walk until the seventh inning when the Indians scored on singles by Buddy Bell and Rick Manning and an infield out by Rico Carty. Willie Horton and Tom Veryzer hit sacrifice flies for the Tigers' tallies.

Royals 2, White Sox 1 at Kansas City (night game):
With two out in the 12th inning, John Mayberry smashed a homer to beat the White Sox, 2-1, for the Royals' fifth straight victory.

Yankees 7, Orioles 3 at New York (day game):
A two-run homer by Chris Chambliss and two-run single by Oscar Gamble in the seventh inning carried the Yankees to a 7-3 victory over the Orioles. Roy White bunted safely to start the stanza and, with one away, Chambliss hit his homer to kayo Mike Cuellar. Dyar Miller, in relief, walked three batters to load the bases before giving way to Grant Jackson, who was tagged for Gamble's single.

Rangers 6, A's 4 at Oakland (day game):
A wild throw by Bert Campaneris in the 12th inning allowed two runs to score and enabled the Rangers to defeat the Athletics, 6-4. Lenny Randle was on second base with one out when Mike Hargrove bounced to pitcher Jim Todd. While Randle was hung up in a rundown, Hargrove reached second. Campaneris then fired to third in an effort to nail Randle, but his throw eluded Sal Bando and both Randle and Hargrove scored on the error.

[DH] Braves 3, Expos 1 (day game) / Expos 6, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Getting two-hit pitching from Dan Warthen, the Expos won the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, 6-1, after the Braves had captured a 3-1 decision in the first game. The Braves, who had failed to score for Dick Ruthven in his last four previous appearances on the mound, finally provided some support for their righthander when Ken Henderson walked in the second inning of the lidlifter and Lee Lacy smashed a homer. Warthen's victory in the nightcap was the southpaw's first of the season after three losses. Tim Foli decided the outcome, hitting a homer in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

Reds 2, Mets 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Santo Alcala, the Reds' 6-6 rookie righthander from the Dominican Republic, turned in his first complete major league game and second victory, shutting out the Mets, 2-0. For the second time in succession, the Mets failed to score for Tom Seaver, who lost his last previous start to the Padres, 4-0. The Reds counted both their runs in the second inning. Dan Driessen walked, took third on a single by Tony Perez and scored on the front end of a double steal. One out later, Dave Concepcion tripled for the second tally.

Phillies 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Bringing his record to 5-0, Jim Lonborg pitched the Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the Astros. The Phillies scored an unearned run on an error by Larry Dierker in the first inning and then turned to power for their second tally when Mike Schmidt smashed his 14th homer of the season in the fourth. The Astros put together two of their four hits -- a double by Wilbur Howard and single by Rob Andrews -- for their run in the sixth. Cesar Cedeno, appearing as a pinch-hitter in the eighth, grounded out to end his 19-game batting streak.

Pirates 4, Dodgers 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Bill Robinson homered in the fourth inning and Al Oliver hit for the circuit after a single by Manny Sanguillen in the fifth to power the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers.

Giants 2, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
A wild pitch by Al Hrabosky in the 11th inning allowed two runs to score and enabled the Giants to defeat the Cardinals, 2-0, behind the combined four-hit hurling of Mike Caldwell and Gary Lavelle. Bobby Murcer singled in the decisive stanza and stopped at third on a double by Gary Matthews. Hrabosky followed with his wild pitch that catcher Ted Simmons was unable to locate in time to prevent both Murcer and Matthews from scoring.
