Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 4, Brewers 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Baltimore scored three runs in the last of the ninth to defeat Milwaukee, 4-3. Tony Muser's two-run single was the only hit during the uprising, marked by four walks and catcher Darrell Porter's throwing error on which the winning run scored. Sixto Lezcano hit a two-run homer for Milwaukee in the fourth.
Angels 10, White Sox 5 at Chicago (night game):
Bill Melton, traded by Chicago last winter, drove in three runs with a triple and two singles that helped California rout the White Sox, 10-5. Frank Tanana, pitching his fifth complete game, lost the shutout in the eighth when Chet Lemon hit a homer, his first in the major leagues, with one on.
Red Sox 7, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Luis Tiant pitched a five-hitter and struck out seven in pitching Boston to a 7-0 triumph over Detroit for his fifth victory against two defeats. Carlton Fisk belted his sixth home run in the fifth. Ron LeFlore singled to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.
Royals 8, Rangers 7 at Kansas City (day game):
After Texas rallied for six runs to tie the game in the ninth, 7-7, Kansas City scored in the 12th to gain an 8-7 victory. Al Cowens walked with two out in the 12th and scored the winning run on Tom Poquette's double.
Twins 5, A's 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Minnesota shaded Oakland, 5-4, when Steve Brye singled, scoring Bob Randall from second, in the 11th inning. Randall had walked and advanced to second on Dave McKay's sacrifice. The Twins scored in the first when Rod Carew singled, stole second, reached third on an infield out and stole home for the 14th time in his career. Carew had two other stolen bases, but his basepath exploits were overshadowed by the A's, who had nine thefts, four by Don Baylor.
[DH] Braves 3, Astros 2 (day game) / Astros 3, Braves 2 at Houston (day game):
Atlanta and Houston divided a doubleheader, the Braves winning the opener, 3-2, and the Astros taking the nightcap by the same score. Andy Messersmith, after four straight losses, outduelled J.R. Richard to post his first victory in the opener. The Astros salvaged a split when Cesar Cedeno scored the winning run on Darrel Chaney's throwing error with two out in the ninth. Cedeno had walked, took second on a sacrifice by Bob Watson, advanced to third on a fly out and came home when Chaney fielded Ken Boswell's grounder and threw wide to first.
Reds 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A crowd of 53,652, largest in the major leagues this year, saw Cincinnati beat Los Angeles, 5-3, ending the Dodgers' nine-game victory string at home. Ken Griffey had a single and triple, driving in three runs, as the Reds regained first place in the N. L. West.
Padres 12, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Randy Jones pitched San Diego to a 12-2 victory over San Francisco and became the first seven-game winner in the major leagues. Doug Rader led the Padres' 16-hit attack with two triples and a single, driving in two runs.
Pirates 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Bill Robinson, the replacement for injured Dave Parker in right field, hit a two-run homer in the seventh to send Pittsburgh past St. Louis, 2-1. Winning pitcher Bruce Kison was relieved by Bob Moose after he was struck on the throwing hand by a liner off Lou Brock's bat in the eighth.
