Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Angels 0 at Chicago (night game):
Three-hit pitching by Bart Johnson and a three-run double by Pat Kelly featured the White Sox' 5-0 victory over the Angels. In the second inning, Jim Spencer singled and Brian Downing was safe when Bobby Bonds dropped his fly ball. Bucky Dent singled to score Spencer. After Bill Stein walked to load the bases, Kelly cleared the sacks with his two-bagger.

Yankees 11, Indians 6 at Cleveland (night game):
After rallying for five runs to tie the score in the ninth inning, the Yankees exploded for five more in the 16th and defeated the Indians, 11-6. Sandy Alomar walked to open the 16th and when Roy White bunted, Jim Kern threw wildly, Alomar going to third and White reaching first safely. Alomar was out at the plate on a grounder by Thurman Munson, but Chris Chambliss walked to load the bases and Lou Piniella singled to drive in two tie-breaking tallies.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Although ending their string of 29 consecutive scoreless innings, the Tigers nevertheless lost to the Red Sox, 5-3. After Rick Burleson hit a three-run homer for the Red Sox in the fifth inning, the Tigers finally ended their drouth with the tying tallies in the eighth, but the Red Sox broke away in the ninth, scoring their two-run winning margin on a single by Rick Miller with the bases loaded.

Royals 3, Rangers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Undefeated Al Fitzmorris boosted his record to 5-0 by pitching the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Amos Otis started the Royals' scoring with a homer in the second inning. A double by Hal McRae and single by Frank White added a tally in the third. The Royals' final run came in the eighth on a single by Otis and double by John Mayberry.

Twins 4, A's 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Three consecutive singles off Jim Todd in the 11th inning brought the Twins a 4-3 victory over the Athletics. With none out, Craig Kusick led off with a single, Phil Roof followed with another hit and Dan Ford then singled to drive in pinch-runner Steve Brye. The Twins' three other runs came on a homer by Butch Wynegar in the sixth inning.

Braves 3, Astros 2 at Houston (day game):
A double by Dave May and singles by Jerry Royster and Jim Wynn produced a run in the 10th inning and gave the Braves a 3-2 victory over the Astros.

Dodgers 5, Reds 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rick Rhoden, who broke a scoreless tie with a double in the fifth inning, allowed only three hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 5-0 victory over the Reds before a crowd of 52,469. Rhoden's double was his second hit of the year and his first extra-bases blow drove in Steve Yeager, who had walked. Joe Ferguson hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning.

Padres 7, Giants 6 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants' unsuccessful attempt to complete a double play in the 11th inning resulted in a 7-6 loss to the Padres when Dave Winfield scored the winning run from second base. The Giants built up a 6-0 lead before the Padres battled back, tying the score on a two-run pinch-homer by Merv Rettenmund in the ninth. Winfield doubled with one away in the 11th and Doug Rader walked. When Fred Kendall hit a grounder for a forceout at second, the Giants tried for the DP, but Kendall beat the throw to first while Winfield, putting on the speed, raced home from second on the play.

Pirates 4, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
For the second straight night, stand-in Bill Robinson powered the Pirates to victory, smashing a homer with two men on base in the ninth inning to beat the Cardinals, 4-1. Richie Hebner walked and Al Oliver singled, but Willie Stargell and Richie Zisk struck out before Robinson connected off Al Hrabosky. Robinson was playing in place of injured Dave Parker.
