Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Brewers 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Mark Belanger, who had been on a hot hitting streak, rapped a triple and single in four trips as the Orioles defeated the Brewers, 5-3. In the first inning, a single by Al Bumbry, Belanger's triple and an infield out by Reggie Jackson staked the Orioles to a 2-0 lead. An additional run in the second and two in the third made it 5-0, but Mike Cuellar failed to take advantage of the lead and lasted only until the sixth when the veteran had to be lifted, marking the eighth straight time that he had been unable to last the route. Hank Aaron hit his second homer of the year for the Brewers and 747th of his career.

White Sox 4, Twins 1 at Chicago (night game):
Pitching seven innings, Pete Vuckovich gained credit for his first major league victory when the White Sox defeated the Twins, 4-1. Ralph Garr collected three singles, driving in one run and scoring twice, to lead the White Sox at bat.

Yankees 3, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians failed to pull off an attempted double steal in the ninth inning and, as a result, lost to the Yankees, 3-2. Otto Velez, celebrating the birth of his first son, hit his first homer of the season to pace the Yankees to a 3-0 lead before the Indians began the ninth with a round-tripper by Larvell Blanks. Buddy Bell walked and scored the second run on a double by Rico Carty. After an infield out advanced pinch-runner Duane Kuiper to third, pinch-hitter Frank Robinson walked. Ron Pruitt struck out. Robinson then initiated an attempted double steal, starting for second and drawing a throw from catcher Rick Dempsey, but second baseman Sandy Alomar's return throw to the plate caught Kuiper attempting to score.

Red Sox 9, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Entering the game with a .198 average, Carl Yastrzemski smashed three homers as well as a single, in a perfect night at the plate and led the Red Sox to a 9-2 victory over the Tigers. Yaz homered with a man on base in the fourth inning and followed with solo shots in the fifth and ninth. Jim Rice also homered for the Red Sox, driving in three runs.

Royals 5, A's 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Hal McRae, Al Cowens and Frank White hit run-scoring singles in the first inning to start the Royals off to a 5-2 victory over the Athletics. Amos Otis walked and was on base with two out when John Mayberry singled and runs followed on the hits by McRae, Cowens and White.

Dodgers 4, Braves 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
With Mike Marshall continuing his superb relief pitching, the Dodgers defeated the Braves, 4-1. Marshall hurled the last two innings and received credit for his eighth save to go with three victories. The bullpen ace had not allowed a run in his last 11 1/3 innings. The Dodgers had a two-run homer by Steve Yeager in their attack.

Phillies 2, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Although forced to call on three relief pitchers, the Phillies edged the Mets, 2-1, for their 11th straight road victory. The Phillies put together singles by Dave Cash, Larry Bowa and Jerry Martin for a run in the fourth inning and added their deciding tally in the fifth when Bowa doubled and Mike Schmidt singled.

Astros 9, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
A five-run explosion in the eighth inning propelled the Astros to a 9-4 victory over the Padres. Rob Andrews singled with the bases loaded, driving in two runs to snap a 4-4 tie, and with two out, Bob Watson smashed a homer to account for three more tallies.

Reds 5, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
A pinch-double by Tony Perez in the eighth inning drove in two runs and enabled the Reds to defeat the Giants, 5-4. Before Perez came through, the Reds scored twice on a double by Johnny Bench in the fourth and added a run on a single by Pete Rose in the fifth. Santo Alcala, who pitched 6 1/3 innings and left with a 3-2 lead, gained his third straight victory.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (night game):
After trailing, 6-1, the Pirates scored twice in the eighth inning and rallied for four runs in the ninth to defeat the Cardinals, 7-6. Mike Tyson and Willie Crawford homered for the Cardinals consecutively in the third inning. Richie Zisk, who doubled a run home for the Pirates in the first, started their comeback with a homer in the eighth, with another run following on four walks. In the ninth, two more walks and a double by Zisk accounted for the first tally in the rally. After another run scored on an infield out, Manny Sanguillen walked and Rennie Stennett doubled to tie the score, but Sanguillen was thrown out at the plate. However, Duffy Dyer then batted for Ramon Hernandez and singled to drive in the deciding run.
