Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 8, Tigers 5 at Baltimore (night game):
Trying to permanently replace Brooks Robinson at third base, Doug DeCinces hit his first career grand slam to cap a six-run first inning as the Orioles downed the Tigers, 8-5. Doyle Alexander entered with none out in the second and allowed four hits the rest of the way for the victory. Ron LeFlore singled in the first to extend his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games. The Orioles managed just one hit in the final 7 1/3 innings off reliever Bill Laxton.
White Sox 6, A's 0 at Chicago (night game):
Ken Brett, making his first A. L. start in four seasons, and reliever Clay Carroll combined for a four-hitter to lead the White Sox to a 6-0 victory over the A's. Vida Blue, trying for his seventh consecutive triumph over the White Sox, was kayoed in the sixth. The White Sox ran their win string to four after scoring three runs in the second on singles by Buddy Bradford, Chet Lemon and Bill Stein and a double by Bucky Dent.
Brewers 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Bill Travers tossed a four-hitter for his first victory since April 28, and the Brewers scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Indians, 4-3. The decisive rally started when Frank Duffy booted Bobby Darwin's grounder. After a pinch single by Bill Sharp, Tim Johnson and Robin Yount hit RBI singles. A single by Darrell Porter and homer by Sixto Lezcano scored the first two Brewer runs.
Royals 5, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
John Mayberry smashed four hits including a home run, and Fred Patek added two singles and a double as the Royals defeated the Twins, 5-1, for their 16th triumph in 19 games. Mayberry homered in the fourth inning and doubled and scored in a three-run sixth while Dennis Leonard coasted on a four-hitter.
Yankees 6, Red Sox 5 at New York (night game):
In his first major league at bat since being recalled from Syracuse (International), Kerry Dineen singled home the decisive run in the 12th inning as the Yankees edged the Red Sox, 6-5. The winning hit came after Carlos May reached first base on Denny Doyle's error and Graig Nettles singled and stole second. The Yankees had tied game in the ninth on Roy White's sacrifice fly after Otto Velez doubled and pinch-runner Sandy Alomar moved to third on a fly ball by Willie Randolph. Sparky Lyle, making his 500th major league appearance, gained the victory with 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Rangers 5, Angels 2 at Texas (night game):
Nelson Briles pitched a four-hitter and Mike Hargrove hit a two-run homer as the Rangers defeated the Angels, 5-2, before a crowd of 40,854 -- largest in the Rangers' five-year history. The Rangers went ahead for good in the third inning when Lenny Randle singled and Hargrove homered.
Dodgers 2, Astros 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Steve Yeager led off the seventh inning with a tie-breaking home run and Burt Hooton pitched a six-hitter as the Dodgers edged the Astros, 2-1. Hooton permitted a leadoff single to Greg Gross, then retired 17 straight batters until two outs in the sixth when the Astros scored on a walk to Gross and singles by Rob Andrews and Jose Cruz. The Dodgers tallied in the second when Ed Goodson singled, advanced on an infield out and scored on Bill Russell's single.
Mets 4, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
After hitting a two-run homer in the seventh inning, Wayne Garrett doubled home two runs in the ninth as the Mets edged the Expos, 4-3. Jerry Grote started the winning rally with a walk against Steve Rogers, who was replaced by Dale Murray. Following a pinch-hit single by Ron Hodges, pinch-hitter Joe Torre grounded into a forceout before Garrett doubled. Andre Thornton accounted for the Expos' runs with a two-run homer and RBI single.
Phillies 2, Cardinals 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Garry Maddox hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Steve Carlton pitched an eight-hitter as the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 2-1, for their sixth straight victory. Maddox followed a walk to Ollie Brown with his homer to help Carlton notch his fourth straight triumph. The Cardinals scored in the ninth on singles by Reggie Smith and Mike Anderson and a double by Hector Cruz.
Cubs 5, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Jose Cardenal capped a four-run fourth-inning with a two-run double and Darold Knowles pitched three scoreless innings of relief as the Cubs nipped the Pirates, 5-4. The game was umpired by amateur umpires when the major league umps honored picket lines by striking vendors and concessionaires. Winning pitcher Rick Reuschel, Rick Monday and Mick Kelleher had run-scoring singles to account for the other Cub runs.
Padres 4, Reds 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres' Randy Jones became the majors' first eight-game winner with a snappy 4-2 victory over the Reds. The Padres scored four in the first inning when Tito Fuentes walked, Willie Davis singled and stole second, Willie McCovey was intentionally walked and Dave Winfield hit his second grand slam of the season. Jones recorded his seventh complete game in 10 starts and needed just 85 pitches.
Braves 8, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Treated to an eight-run lead after two innings, Andy Messersmith hurled a three-hitter and coasted to his second straight victory by downing the Giants, 8-0.
