Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 4, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
A winner of three games in relief, Wayne Garland made his first start of the season and received credit for the Orioles' 4-1 victory over the Red Sox.
Royals 3, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan opened May with a victory, but the rest of the month proved a complete washout for the speedballer, who suffered his fifth straight defeat when the Royals shut out the Angels, 3-0, behind the pitching of Doug Bird. Bob Stinson drove in two of the Royals' runs with a double and a pair of singles.
Yankees 9, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
In addition to stopping Ron LeFlore's 30-game hitting streak, the Yankees smashed three homers in one inning and defeated the Tigers, 9-5. In the fourth inning, after Vern Ruhle had retired the first nine batters, the Yankees took aim at the Tigers' hurler with circuit clouts by Mickey Rivers, Thurman Munson and Chris Chambliss, all within a span of eight pitches. Roy White added the fourth Yankee homer off Steve Grilli in the eighth.
Rangers 4, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Handed a four-run lead in the first inning, Jim Umbarger pitched the Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Twins. Juan Beniquez walked and Mike Hargrove and Toby Harrah singled for the initial marker before Jeff Burroughs capped the opening frame with a three-run homer.
A's 11, White Sox 0 at Oakland (night game):
In their most one-sided victory of the season so far, the Athletics trounced the White Sox, 11-0, with a 16-hit attack that included homers by Sal Bando, Phil Garner and Billy Williams in the second inning during a nine-run outburst. Ken McMullen added a round-tripper in the fourth.
Reds 9, Dodgers 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
After being sidelined for six days with a lame back, Joe Morgan returned to action and smashed a three-run homer in the first inning to start the Reds off to a 9-0 victory over the Dodgers. Pete Rose singled and Ken Griffey walked before Morgan rapped his round-tripper off Don Sutton. Then after two out, Johnny Bench also hit for the circuit.
Cardinals 6, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
A two-run homer by Bake McBride in the third inning and grand slam by Willie Crawford in the fifth powered the Cardinals to a 6-0 victory over the Mets behind the three-hit hurling of John Curtis. Both homers came off Craig Swan.
Phillies 10, Expos 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Erupting for six runs in the second inning, the Phillies defeated the Expos, 10-3. Bobby Tolan walked and Jay Johnstone doubled to start the stanza. Tolan was out at the plate on a grounder by Garry Maddox, but Dick Allen doubled to drive in Johnstone. The Expos passed Bob Boone intentionally to get at Tom Underwood, who upset the apple cart with a single for another tally. Dave Cash singled to account for two runs, Mike Schmidt singled for the fifth run of the frame and the sixth counted on an error.
Giants 5, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Firing his second consecutive shutout, John Montefusco pitched the Giants to a 5-0 victory over the Padres.
