Orioles 7, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Making his fourth try, Jim Palmer gained his sixth victory of the season, pitching the Orioles past the Red Sox, 7-2. In his three previous starts, Palmer came away with one loss and a pair of no-decisions. Mark Belanger collected three hits, giving the Orioles' shortstop six in two successive games.

[DH] Angels 3, Royals 2 (day game) / Angels 7, Royals 2 at California (day game):
A three-run rally in the ninth inning of the first game and a six-run outburst in the eighth inning of the second game carried the Angels to a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Royals, 3-2 and 7-2. In the opener, the Angels put together their winning runs in the ninth on an infield hit by Bobby Bonds, pass to Bill Melton, triple by Ron Jackson and single by Andy Etchebarren. In the nightcap, the Angels did their big scoring in the eighth on a four singles, two walks and two errors. Dave Chalk accounted for two RBIs with a single. The sweep was the first for the Angels at home since June 24, 1970.

Tigers 4, Yankees 1 at Detroit (day game):
Supported by two homers, Dave Roberts pitched the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Yankees. Jason Thompson hit for the circuit with a man on in the sixth inning and John Wockenfuss added a solo swat in the seventh.

Indians 6, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
After nine scoreless innings, the Indians erupted in the 10th to defeat the Brewers, 6-0. Duane Kuiper knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single to break the deadlock and after Buddy Bell was hit by a pitch to fillthe sacks again, Rick Manning belted a grand-slam homer.

Twins 5, Rangers 1 at Minnesota (day game):
A loser of six straight decisions with the Twins since September 24, 1975, including five this year, Jim Hughes gained his first victory of the season, defeating the Rangers, 5-1. Hughes pitched 6 2/3 innings before allowing a double by Tom Grieve for the first of the Rangers' three hits.

A's 2, White Sox 0 at Oakland (day game):
Following an 11-0 walloping in the previous night's game, the Athletics handed the White Sox their second successive shutout, winning, 2-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Vida Blue.

Astros 4, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Joe Niekro hit the first homer of his major league career and smacked it off his brother, Phil, as the Astros defeated the Braves, 4-3. Joe's blow in the seventh inning tied the score at 2-2. Then in the eighth, Cesar Cedeno walked and counted on a double by Jose Cruz. Ken Boswell followed with a single to drive in Cruz, enabling the Astros to withstand a homer by Jim Wynn in the Braves' half of the eighth.

Cubs 4, Pirates 1 at Chicago (day game):
With two out in the seventh inning, Mick Kelleher and Champ Summers singled and Rick Monday homered to lift the Cubs to a 4-1 victory over the Pirates.

Reds 6, Dodgers 5 at Cincinnati (day game):
With Mike Marshall failing in relief, the Reds rallied for three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Dodgers, 6-5. The Dodgers, who had a homer by Steve Garvey, held a 5-2 lead before Tony Perez cut into their margin with a circuit clout in the eighth. Dave Concepcion opened the ninth with a single to chase Rick Rhoden. After Marshall relieved, the Reds put over their winning runs on a single by Cesar Geronimo, sacrifice by Ed Armbrister, infield out by Pete Rose, triple by Ken Griffey and single by Joe Morgan.

Cardinals 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
A homer by Reggie Smith in the 10th inning gave the Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Smith's homer came off Ken Sanders, who had just taken the mound in relief.

Phillies 6, Expos 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies broke a tight game apart with four runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Expos, 6-1, for their 21st victory in the last 25 games. Two runs in the clinching outburst counted on a homer by Dick Allen and two others on a throwing error by Gary Carter.

Padres 4, Giants 0 at San Diego (night game):
Although rapped for 10 hits, Dave Freisleben was able to post his second consecutive shutout, pitching the Padres to a 4-0 victory over the Giants.
