Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 2, Red Sox 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Wayne Garland pitched a two-hitter and had 10 strikeouts in the first complete game of his major league career and the Orioles defeated the Red Sox, 2-0. Rico Petrocelli singled with two out in the eighth inning for the first hit off Garland. An infield single by Rick Miller was the Red Sox' only other safety. Mark Belanger hit his first home run of the season in the third inning.
Angels 2, Twins 1 at California (night game):
The Angels squeezed out a 2-1 triumph over the Twins in 10 innings in a game played under protest by the Twins. Bob Jones, Dave Chalk and pinch-hitter Bill Melton linked successive singles in the 10th to make a winner of Gary Ross, who scattered eight hits. The Twins' protest came in the fourth when Rod Carew was ruled out on an appeal play for failure to touch second. The Twins argued the ball was dead when Bruce Bochte's throw from left field, trying to double up Carew, carried into the dugout.
White Sox 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Jim Spencer singled, scoring Jorge Orta with one out in the 11th inning to enable the White Sox to overcome the Royals, 2-1, and end their 10-game losing streak. The game-winning hit came after Orta singled and advanced on Buddy Bradford's sacrifice. The White Sox had tied game in the ninth on successive singles by Ralph Garr, Bradford and Spencer.
Tigers 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Ben Oglivie hit a home run in the 11th inning to send the Tigers away with a 3-2 triumph over the Brewers. It was the sixth home run of the season for Oglivie and three have come against the Brewers.
Yankees 6, Indians 0 at New York (night game):
Willie Randolph drove in two runs with a triple in the fourth inning and the Yankees went on to beat the Indians, 6-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Ed Figueroa.
Rangers 1, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
The Rangers combined the one-hit pitching of Bert Blyleven and a leadoff home run in the 10th inning by Tom Grieve to defeat the Athletics, 1-0. Ken McMullen's single, leading off in the fifth, was the only hit off Blyleven, who posted his first victory since joining the Rangers.
Braves 11, Astros 9 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves wasted a five-run lead, but bounced back to defeat the Astros, 11-9, on Jim Wynn's two-run homer in the seventh inning. Rowland Office, who extended his hitting streak to 26 games with four hits, singled ahead of Wynn's game-winning clout.
Reds 3, Dodgers 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Back-to-back home runs by Ken Griffey and George Foster on successive pitches by Doug Rau in the sixth powered the Reds to a 3-1 victory over the Dodgers behind rookie Pat Zachry's four-hit pitching.
Phillies 8, Expos 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Greg Luzinski doubled, touching off a four-run fourth inning, and hit his 100th career home run in the fifth as the Phillies pounded the Expos, 8-3.
Padres 6, Giants 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres launched a 19-hit attack, including home runs by Johnny Grubb and Willie Davis, to down the Giants, 6-3. Grubb led off the game with his second homer, then doubled and scored on Davis' third round-tripper of the season in the fifth. Gary Thomasson's first homer of '76 was a two-run clout in the seventh.
Cardinals 7, Mets 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Lou Brock delivered a two-run single in a three-run, second-inning uprising that sent the Cardinals on their way to a 7-2 triumph over the Mets and made a winner of Lynn McGlothen for the first time since May 25.
