Red Sox 12, Orioles 8 at Boston (night game):
Rookie third baseman Butch Hobson, just up from Rhode Island (International), hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer in the sixth inning, breaking an 8-8 tie, and the Red Sox went on to beat the Orioles, 12-8.
Indians 5, Brewers 3 at Cleveland (night game):
The combination of John Lowenstein and Jim Bibby led the Indians to a 5-3 triumph over the Brewers. Lowenstein drove in two runs with a single and homer and Bibby pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-hit relief after the Brewers kayoed Don Hood.
Tigers 5, Yankees 1 at Detroit (night game):
A Family Night crowd of 47,855 and a national television audience saw Mark Fidrych, colorful rookie righthander, pitch the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Yankees. Rusty Staub hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the first inning and Fidrych limited the Yankees to seven hits in posting his seventh victory in succession.
Twins 4, Royals 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins struck for two runs in the eighth inning, following a 61-minute rain delay, to defeat the Royals, 4-3. Tony Oliva doubled, scoring Lyman Bostock who had walked. Oliva advanced to third on a wild relay throw by Frank White, then scored on Larry Hisle's sacrifice fly.
Rangers 3, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers defeated the Athletics, 3-2, in 11 innings, when Jeff Burroughs singled, scoring Lenny Randle from second base. Randle reached first on a bad-hop single off Bert Campaneris' glove and advanced on Ken Pape's sacrifice. Reliever Jim Todd walked Toby Harrah intentionally to face Burroughs, who broke up the game.
Dodgers 5, Braves 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Pinch-runner Davey Lopes scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by Lee Lacy and Bill Buckner followed with a home run as the Dodgers broke a 2-2 deadlock in the seventh inning, then went on to beat the Braves, 5-2. Lopes, running for winning pitcher Rick Rhoden, who had singled, stole second and reached third on Earl Williams' throwing error.
Phillies 6, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Garry Maddox drove in three runs with a single, triple and sacrifice fly and Mike Schmidt hit his 21st home run to power the Phillies to a 6-2 triumph over the Expos. Steve Carlton pitched a seven-hitter and had nine strikeouts in his seventh victory.
Mets 5, Cardinals 4 at New York (night game):
Dave Kingman singled, advanced to third on a pinch-single by Joe Torre and scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Al Hrabosky in the eighth inning of the Mets' 5-4 victory over the Cardinals. Kingman hit his 26th home run in the fourth.
Pirates 9, Cubs 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Al Oliver went 4-for-5, collecting two singles, a double and home run, while driving in four runs as the Pirates routed the Cubs, 9-2.
Reds 7, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Joe Morgan had a double and his 13th homer of season, driving in four runs, in the Reds' uphill 7-3 victory over the Padres. Willie McCovey hit a three-run homer, the 463rd of his career, for the Padres in the first, but the Reds came back in the third with a three-run homer by Morgan, a single by George Foster and double by Tony Perez.
Astros 8, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Cliff Johnson drove in three runs with two doubles to lead the Astros to an 8-2 victory over the Giants. Ken Forsch, relieving winner Mike Cosgrove in the seventh, earned his 14th save.
