Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 at Boston (night game):
Rick Wise allowed only one hit for the second time in two weeks and pitched the Red Sox to a 2-0 victory over the Orioles. Mike Cuellar engaged Wise in a scoreless duel until the eighth inning when the Red Sox scored their pair on a single by Dwight Evans, a sacrifice, double by Steve Dillard and single by Butch Hobson. Wise previously pitched a one-hitter on June 14, beating the Twins, 5-0.

Angels 4, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Frank Tanana, coming back after a two-week layoff because of a sprained muscle in his forearm, pitched the Angels to a 4-1 victory over the White Sox. Dave Collins clinched the decision for Tanana, hitting a homer with a man on base in the ninth inning.

Indians 4, Brewers 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Larvell Blanks and George Hendrick each homered with a man on base in the first inning and that was enough to carry the Indians to a 4-1 victory over the Brewers. Rick Manning singled ahead of Blanks' blow, while Rico Carty was on base with a single when Hendrick hit for the circuit.

Tigers 7, Yankees 5 at Detroit (night game):
After scoring four runs in the first inning, the Yankees failed to hold the lead and lost to the Tigers, 7-5. The Tigers chopped the Yankees' margin to one run before Chris Chambliss made it 5-3 with a homer in the seventh. However, in the Tigers' half, Ron LeFlore knocked in two runs with a triple to tie the score and then counted the leading run on a single by Tom Veryzer. Rusty Staub iced the cake with a homer in the eighth.

Royals 1, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Fred Patek in the 10th inning decided a pitching duel and enabled the Royals to defeat the Twins, 1-0. A single by Hal McRae, an error and infield out set the stage for Patek's scoring fly.

A's 8, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Sal Bando was the big man at bat for the Athletics, driving in two runs with a homer in the first inning and two more with a double in the third, to feature an 8-3 victory over the Rangers.

Dodgers 2, Braves 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Tommy John, who laid down a squeeze bunt that scored the deciding run, pitched the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Braves. In the Dodgers' second inning, Reggie Smith walked and scored on singles by Lee Lacy and Dusty Baker. Lacy took third on Baker's hit and crossed the plate on John's bunt.

Phillies 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
A squeeze bunt by Bob Boone in the ninth inning, scoring Dick Allen, enabled the Phillies to edge the Expos, 2-1. Allen singled to open the stanza and took third on a single by Jay Johnstone. After Garry Maddox flied out, Boone laid down his successful bunt on the first base side.

Mets 2, Cardinals 0 at New York (night game):
Dave Kingman hit his 27th homer of the season, connecting with a man on base in the first inning, for the blow that gave the Mets a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals behind the three-hit pitching of Mickey Lolich.

Pirates 10, Cubs 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Handed an eight-run lead in the first inning, John Candelaria easily pitched the Pirates to a 10-1 victory, holding the Cubs to three hits. The Pirates combined two walks, two errors, five hits, a passed ball and a double steal on which Al Oliver scored in their big inning. Candelaria joined in the spree with a two-run triple.

Reds 12, Padres 5 at San Diego (night game):
Smashing a 5-5 tie, the Reds exploded for seven runs in the 14th inning and walloped the Padres, 12-5. Mike Lum triggered the outburst with a homer to break the deadlock. Singles by Pete Rose, Ken Griffey and Doug Flynn added another run. After one out, Tony Perez hit a sacrifice fly. Johnny Bench walked, Cesar Geronimo tripled for his fifth hit of the night and Dave Concepcion climaxed the scoring spree with a homer.

Astros 4, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Four unearned runs handed the Astros a 4-3 victory over the Giants. In the eighth inning, with the Giants leading, 3-1, Enos Cabell flied out. Leon Roberts singled, but Cesar Cedeno flied out and Bob Watson was safe on a throwing error by Ken Reitz for what should have been the third out. Jose Cruz then singled, driving in one run, and Cliff Johnson tripled to drive in two more and give the Astros their decision.
