Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 4, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
Swinging at the first pitch thrown to him in the eighth inning, Craig Kusick slammed a homer to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Twins to a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox. After Kusick's clout, Butch Wynegar drove in another run with a single in the same stanza to clinch the outcome.

Orioles 5, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Jim Palmer, who was not selected for the A. L. All-Star team, posted his 11th victory of the season as the Orioles defeated the Angels, 5-2. However, Mark Belanger, who was named to the All-Star squad, led the Orioles at bat, driving in two runs with a single and double.

Royals 7, Tigers 1 at Detroit (day game):
George Brett had three hits or more in one game for the 20th time this season and Hal McRae drove in four runs as the Royals rapped the Tigers, 7-1. The Tigers collected four hits and just one off Al Fitzmorris, who pitched the first five innings before wilting in the high heat and humidity. McRae accounted for his RBIs with a homer and double. Brett had two singles and a triple and drove in a pair of runs with his three-bagger in the seventh.

Brewers 3, Rangers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Bill Travers pitched eight innings in 96-degree heat before surrendering the mound to Danny Frisella, who completed pitching the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Of course the heat was just as tough on Gaylord Perry, who was the Rangers' loser in a bid for his 10th victory. Tom Grieve homered for the Rangers' lone tally, while Don Money batted in two runs for the Brewers with a homer in the first inning and a grounder in the third.

White Sox 4, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Ken Brett, who was with the Yankees earlier this season before being involved in a May 18 deal, stopped his ex-teammates on six hits and pitched the White Sox to a 4-1 victory. Jack Brohamer homered in the fourth inning, Jorge Orta knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the eighth and Bucky Dent added an insurance run with a single in the ninth to feature the White Sox scoring. Chris Chambliss homered for the Yankees' only marker.

A's 7, Indians 3 at Oakland (day game):
The Athletics ran wild on the Indians, stealing eight bases en route to a 7-3 victory. Bill North and Bert Campaneris pilfered two apiece. North's steals brought his league-leading total to 41. The Indians, while losing for seventh time in their last eight games, put up a stiff fight, tying the score at 3-3 before the A's broke away with three runs in the seventh inning, featuring sacrifice flies by Campaneris and Don Baylor and a homer by Joe Rudi.

Mets 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Dave Kingman hit two homers, his 29th and 30th of the season, and Ron Hodges added a circuit clout, as the Mets defeated the Braves, 4-2, pinning the loss on Andy Messersmith.

Cubs 8, Giants 6 at Chicago (day game):
Manny Trillo drove in four runs with a double, triple and homer, while Bill Madlock also hit for the circuit, as the Cubs defeated the Giants, 8-6. Bobby Murcer homered with two aboard for the Giants' initial runs. Trillo connected for the circuit with a man on base in the third. Madlock hit his homer to break a 6-6 tie in the eighth. Pete LaCock then singled and Trillo tripled for his third extra-base hit of the game to provide the Cubs with an insurance tally.

Pirates 7, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Pirates, after scoring once in the first inning, exploded for five runs in the second and breezed to a 7-1 victory over the Reds to the disappointment of the Cincinnati crowd of 50,756. John Candelaria hurled the route for the Pirates, holding the Reds to six hits. In the first, the Pirates' initial run came on a triple by Frank Taveras and infield out by Ed Kirkpatrick. The outburst in the second included two walks and singles by Manny Sanguillen and Tommy Helms for two runs. Candelaria bunted safely, but Taveras grounded into a double play. That did not stop the Pirates, who added their three other runs in the inning on a walk and a triple by Al Oliver.

Astros 4, Expos 2 at Houston (night game):
Pitching the last 1 1/3 innings in relief of J.R. Richard, Ken Forsch received credit for his 15th save of the season when the Astros defeated the Expos, 4-2. The Astros, picking up a run at a time, were ahead, 3-0, before the Expos rallied for their pair in the eighth. A double by Pepe Mangual, walk to Jerry White and two infield outs accounted for the initial tally. After Richard hit Larry Parrish with a pitched ball, Forsch took over. Pete Mackanin greeted Forsch with a run-scoring single, but the Astros' ace reliever clamped down the rest of the way.

[DH] Phillies 5, Padres 0 (night game) / Phillies 4, Padres 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run double by Jay Johnstone in the first game and three RBIs by Bob Boone in the second game helped the Phillies sweep over the Padres in a doubleheader, 5-0 and 4-2. Johnstone hit his bases-loaded double in the first inning of the opener and Steve Carlton took it from there to hurl the shutout. The lefthander also struck out five to bring his career total to 2,000. In the nightcap, after plating a run with a double in the second inning, Boone hit an inside-the-park homer with Garry Maddox on base in the sixth. Jim Lonborg, who was the winner, recorded his 11th victory.

Cardinals 6, Dodgers 3 at St. Louis (night game):
A triple by Mike Tyson capped a three-run outburst by the Cardinals in the sixth inning and led to a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers. Reggie Smith homered for two of the Dodgers' runs. In the Cardinals' sixth, Tommy John walked Mike Anderson and Ted Simmons before being lifted. After Elias Sosa took over, Joe Ferguson sacrificed and Willie Crawford was passed intentionally. Lou Brock, pinch-hitting, forced Crawford as Anderson scored. Tyson then climaxed the inning with his triple for two runs.
