Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 8, Orioles 6 at Baltimore (day game):
The Angels overcame the slugging of Reggie Jackson and Bobby Grich to defeat the Orioles, 8-6. Jackson batted in four runs, three with a homer. Grich accounted for two RBIs with a triple and homer. The Angels, who had a two-run single by Tony Solaita while scoring three times in the first inning, fell behind before regaining the lead at 6-5 in the sixth on a pass to Bruce Bochte, single by Ron Jackson, a sacrifice, infield out by Terry Humphrey and single by Dave Collins. After both clubs picked up singletons in the eighth, Solaita clinched the victory for the Angels with a homer in the ninth.

White Sox 13, Brewers 3 at Chicago (day game):
Getting their power from four homers, good for 10 runs, the White Sox trounced the Brewers, 13-3. Lamar Johnson hit his first two round-trippers of the year, driving in four runs, while Kevin Bell and Bill Stein each connected for the circuit with two men on base.

A's 10, Tigers 1 at Detroit (day game):
Sal Bando and Don Baylor drove in three runs apiece and the Athletics continued to run wild on the bases while trouncing the Tigers, 10-1. Bando, hitless in 16 previous times at bat, broke out of his slump with a double and single. The A's stole four bases, giving them a total of 13 thefts in the four-game series with the Tigers.

Royals 6, Red Sox 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Marty Pattin made his second start of the season and emerged with credit for the Royals' 6-3 victory over the Red Sox. George Brett sealed the Royals' triumph by hitting a two-run homer in the seventh. Pattin weakened in the eighth and gave way to Steve Mingori, who finished.

Indians 6, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Rico Carty, Indians' designated hitter, smashed a pair of two-run homers in a 6-1 victory over the Twins. Alan Ashby accounted for the Tribe's two other runs with a single and double. Stan Thomas pitched the distance for the Indians, turning in his first complete game of the season.

Rangers 3, Yankees 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers ended their 10-game losing streak by beating the Yankees, 3-2. Steve Hargan pitched the route, setting a Ranger club record for longest complete game. Both Yankee runs were unearned. The Rangers tied the score in the ninth after Jeff Burroughs singled, Juan Beniquez took over on the paths and came home on a sacrifice and single by Lenny Randle. In the 12th, a pass to Jim Sundberg, a sacrifice, two-out intentional walk to Mike Hargrove and single by Beniquez, who remained in the game after his pinch-running appearance, gave the Rangers their victory.

Phillies 2, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
When the Dodgers missed a rundown play in the ninth inning, Mike Schmidt raced home to bring a 2-1 victory to the Phillies. Dick Allen homered for the Phillies' other run. Steve Garvey drove in Bill Buckner with the tying tally in the sixth but then was somewhat of a goat in the ninth. Schmidt was hit by a pitch and took third on a single by Greg Luzinski. Jerry Martin ran for Luzinski. Tommy Hutton grounded to Garvey, who stepped on first to retire the batter and then tried to run down Martin. However, Martin evaded the tag and returned to first safely as Schmidt scored the winning run from third.

[DH] Astros 7, Expos 6 (night game) / Astros 14, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
A tremendous batting outburst by Ed Herrmann, who drove in seven runs with seven hits in 10 trips, paced the Astros to 7-6 and 14-1 victories in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Expos. The opener was decided in the 10th inning when the Astros scored on singles by Jose Cruz, Enos Cabell and Herrmann. Four other hits by Herrmann in the game included a homer. The Expos sent the contest into overtime with a four-run rally in the ninth, three runs scoring on a pinch-homer by Jose Morales. Dan Larson, coming up from Memphis (International), made his debut with the Astros in the nightcap and breezed to victory with a five-hitter. The Astros backed their rookie with 22 hits, including two singles in five trips for Herrmann, who batted in three runs.

Mets 2, Braves 0 at New York (day game):
Dave Kingman smashed his 32nd homer of the season in support of Mickey Lolich, who allowed only two hits and pitched the Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Braves. The Mets scored their initial run in the third inning on a single by Roy Staiger, sacrifice by Lolich and single by Felix Millan before Kingman clouted his homer in the next stanza.

Reds 9, Pirates 8 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A six-run explosion in the fifth inning helped the Reds outlast the Pirates, 9-8. The Reds trailed, 3-1, when Tony Perez and Cesar Geronimo opened the fifth with singles. Dave Concepcion bunted and when Doc Medich threw wildly, one run scored. Mike Lum batted for Don Gullett and tripled to drive in two tallies. Ed Armbrister, running for Lum, beat the throw home on a grounder by Ken Griffey before Joe Morgan came to the plate and hit a two-run homer. The Reds picked up a run in each of the next two innings before the Pirates fell short with rallies that included a homer by Bob Robertson with a man on base.

Padres 2, Cubs 1 at San Diego (day game):
Butch Metzger, who relieved Dan Spillner in the ninth inning, received credit for his sixth straight victory without a defeat when the Padres counted in their half to edge the Cubs, 2-1. Doug Rader was safe on an error to open the stanza and was forced by Fred Kendall. Bob Davis ran for Kendall and took second on a sacrifice by Enzo Hernandez. After an intentional pass to pinch-hitter Willie McCovey, Jerry Turner looped a single into left field to score Davis.

[DH] Giants 5, Cardinals 4 (day game) / Cardinals 5, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
With two out in the 10th inning, the Cardinals scored on a walk and singles by Ted Simmons and Joe Ferguson to gain a 5-4 victory for a split of a doubleheader with the Giants, who won the opener by the same 5-4 score. In the lidlifter, Mike Tyson homered for the Cardinals and Bpbby Murcer for the Giants to help effect a 4-4 tie before the Giants scored the deciding run in the sixth inning on a double by Darrell Evans, bunt by Mike Sadek and sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Chris Arnold.
