Yankees 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Thurman Munson, who opened the ninth inning with a double, scored the winning run on a throwing error by Jack Brohamer when the Yankees beat the White Sox, 3-2. Brohamer erred trying to throw out Chris Chambliss after a drag bunt.

[DH] Indians 3, A's 2 (night game) / A's 10, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians and Athletics divided a twi-night doubleheader, the Tribe taking the opener, 3-2, and the A's winning the nightcap, 10-3. Ray Fosse doubled in the seventh inning and scored the winning run of the first game on Frank Duffy's single. Don Baylor had three hits and drove in three runs while Billy Williams pounded a two-run homer to power the A's to their second-game victory.

Orioles 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run homer by Reggie Jackson and the pitching of Jim Palmer carried the Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Royals. Palmer needed help from reliever Tippy Martinez in the eighth before becoming the American League's first 13-game winner. George Brett, with two doubles and two singles, had four hits in a game for the fifth time this season.

[DH] Angels 4, Brewers 2 (night game) / Angels 6, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Angels swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Brewers, 4-2 and 6-1, to run their winning streak to four games. Bobby Bonds, with two singles, drove in three runs in the first game. Dave Collins, who had three hits, delivered a two-run single in the third inning of the afterpiece, when the Angels scored five runs.

Twins 6, Tigers 5 at Minnesota (night game):
Bob Randall singled, producing one run, and Lyman Bostock singled for two more in a three-run sixth inning that enabled the Twins to edge the Tigers, 6-5. Larry Hisle hit a three-run homer for the Twins in the third. Bill Freehan, Pedro Garcia, Mickey Stanley and Willie Horton homered for the Tigers.

Rangers 4, Red Sox 3 at Texas (night game):
Toby Harrah singled with two out in the 11th, scoring Gene Clines from second base as the Rangers defeated the Red Sox, 4-3, and spoiled the managerial debut of Don Zimmer. Clines had singled and advanced to second on Mike Hargrove's sacrifice. Zimmer became the Bosox pilot when Darrell Johnson was fired earlier in the day.

Phillies 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Trailing, 3-2, entering the ninth inning, the Phillies loaded the bases on Mike Schmidt's single, a double by Greg Luzinskl and walk to Jay Johnstone, then scored three runs to gain a 5-3 triumph over the Dodgers. Relievers Charlie Hough and Elias Sosa walked Garry Maddox and Tommy Hutton, forcing in two runs. Bob Boone's sacrifice fly scored the third.

Astros 3, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
J.R. Richard yielded only five hits in leading the Astros to a 3-1 victory over the Expos. Singles by Roger Metzger, Richard and Greg Gross broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning when the Astros scored two runs en route to their 11th victory in 13 games. Bob Watson's sacrifice fly produced an insurance tally.

Braves 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
The Braves scored three runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat the Mets, 4-2, with Phil Niekro and Mike Marshall collaborating on a six-hitter. The Braves filled the bases in the fourth on Willie Montanez' single, Ken Henderson's double and an intentional walk to Darrel Chaney. Rod Gilbreath's sacrifice fly, Mike Vail's throwing error and Niekro's single produced three runs.

Reds 4, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dave Concepcion doubled, driving in two runs in the decisive fifth inning and the Reds went on to beat the Pirates, 4-2, behind Pat Zachry's five-hit pitching. Bill Robinson stroked his 16th and 17th homers for the Pirates.

Padres 3, Cubs 2 at San Diego (night game):
Dave Winfield tripled to start the last of the eighth inning, then scored the winning run on Johnny Grubb's sacrifice fly when the Padres defeated the Cubs, 3-2, and extended the Chicago losing streak to six games.

Giants 5, Cardinals 3 at San Francisco (day game):
John D'Acquisto, with ninth-inning help from Mike Caldwell, posted his first victory of the season after five defeats as the Giants downed the Cardinals, 5-3. Gary Matthews' single was the only hit in the Giants' three-run fifth inning, when two runs scored on Vic Harris' throwing error and Bob Forsch walked Darrell Evans, forcing in another run.
