Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] White Sox 9, Tigers 3 (day game) / Tigers 5, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Blue Moon Odom, making his first start of the season for the White Sox, and Ray Bare, making his first start in six weeks for the Tigers, each emerged with a victory as the clubs split a twi-night doubleheader. Odom, who needed help from Pete Vuckovich in the seventh inning, received credit for a 9-3 win in the opener, while Bare won the nightcap, 5-1, with the assistance of John Hiller, who relieved in the eighth. Lamar Johnson had three hits and drove in three runs for the White Sox in the lidlifter and Bill Stein accounted for two with a homer. The Tigers' support of Bare in the second game included a homer by Jason Thompson with a man on base.
Indians 7, Angels 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Charlie Spikes, who has been a red-hot hitter since the All-Star break, smashed the first grand slam of his major league career to help power the Indians to a 7-5 victory over the Angels. George Hendrick drove in a run with a single in the first inning before the Indians loaded the bases to set the stage for Spikes' slam. Boog Powell added a run with his first homer since May 26 in the fourth.
Royals 3, Brewers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Paul Splittorff extended his Royals' club record to eight victories in a row by defeating the Brewers, 3-1, with help from Mark Littell. After the Brewers scored in the seventh inning, Littell relieved with two men on base and two out, walked George Scott to fill the sacks and then retired Hank Aaron on a pop fly. Buck Martinez batted in the Royals' first two runs with grounders in the second and fourth. Singles by Frank White and Tom Poquette, around an infield out, produced the Royals' insurance run in the fifth.
Twins 5, Red Sox 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Pete Redfern, who gave up only four hits but walked six before being lifted in the eighth inning, gained his first win since June 19 as the Twins defeated the Red Sox, 5-1. The Twins jumped on Luis Tiant for three runs in the first. Rod Carew tripled to drive in the first counter and scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Lyman Bostock. Mike Cubbage later batted in the third run of the inning with a single.
A's 6, Yankees 5 at New York (day game):
A sacrifice fly by Bert Campaneris in the ninth inning provided the Athletics with a 6-5 victory over the Yankees. Billy Williams led off the frame with a single and gave way to pinch-runner Larry Lintz, who took third on a single by Phil Garner and scored on Campy's fly. Earlier in the game, Joe Rudi homered with a man on base for the A's, while the Yankees had two circuit clouts by Oscar Gamble and one by Graig Nettles.
Orioles 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Reggie Jackson homered for his fifth game in a row, one short of the A. L. record, to provide a run in the ninth inning that gave the Orioles a 4-3 victory over the Rangers. Five players share the A. L. mark of homers in six consecutive games. In the N. L., Dale Long of the Pirates hit homers in eight straight games in 1956.
Padres 5, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The decision of manager John McNamara to let relief pitcher Butch Metzger bat in the 11th inning paid off with an unearned run that gave the Padres a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. Metzger drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pickoff attempt by Elias Sosa and scored on a sacrifice fly by Willie Davis. As a result, Metzger gained credit for his seventh straight victory with help from Dave Freisleben, who had to come to his rescue in the Dodgers' half of the 11th.
Braves 7, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Ken Henderson drove in two runs with a homer in the fourth inning and two more with a single in the sixth to lead the Braves to a 7-1 victory over the Expos. Carl Morton, who won 17 games last year, finally gained his first victory of the current season after seven losses. The veteran righthander's arm stiffened after six innings and Bruce Dal Canton finished. Del Unser had a double, triple and homer in only his second game in an Expos' uniform.
Phillies 3, Pirates 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies scored three runs in the first inning and proceeded to defeat the Pirates, 3-0, behind the pitching of starter Tom Underwood and reliever Ron Reed. In the first, Larry Bowa singled, stole second and scored on a single by Greg Luzinski. Dick Allen followed with a single and Jay Johnstone then doubled to drive in Luzinski and Allen. Reed replaced Underwood after Willie Stargell singled in the ninth and picked up his seventh save by striking out Bill Robinson and inducing Richie Zisk to ground into a double play.
Cubs 8, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cubs took advantage of five errors and scored five unearned runs to defeat the Cardinals, 8-4.
