Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Brewers 4, Orioles 1 (night game) / Brewers 5, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
After winning the first game, 4-1, the Brewers got a four-hit pitching performance from Jerry Augustine and also won the second game, 5-0, in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Orioles. Gorman Thomas hit a two-run homer for the Brewers in the opener and Robin Yount drove in their two other runs while hitting safely in his 16th straight game. Reggie Jackson, who had hit homers for the Orioles in six straight games, was stopped on his slugging streak. In the nightcap, Yount also was halted, going hitless in three official trips. The Brewers had a homer by Jack Heidemann while handing Wayne Garland only his second loss in 14 decisions.

[DH] Angels 8, Rangers 0 (night game) / Angels 4, Rangers 3 at California (night game):
Making their debut under Norm Sherry, who replaced Dick Williams as manager, the Angels swept a twi-night doubleheader with the Rangers, 8-0 and 4-3. In the opener, Paul Hartzell yielded only three hits and posted his first major league shutout. Rusty Torres hit a homer and double in support of the Angels' rookie righthander, while Mario Guerrero chipped in with two singles and a double. In the nightcap, the Angels scored three runs in the third inning, two counting on a triple by Jerry Remy, and then added an unearned run without the benefit of a hit in the fifth for what proved to be their winning tally.

Twins 17, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
Lyman Bostock hit for the cycle and Steve Braun and Dan Ford each smashed three-run homers as the Twins overwhelmed the White Sox, 17-2. Bostock, who had a sacrifice fly and walk to go with his homer, triple, double and single, drove in four runs. Braun also accounted for four RBIs with a single in addition to his homer. Ralph Garr collected four hits for the White Sox.

Tigers 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Reliever Jim Kern, who had not given up a homer in 69 1/3 consecutive innings, had his record ruined when Ben Oglivie hit for the circuit as the leadoff batter in the eighth to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Indians. The Tigers grabbed a 4-0 lead with the aid of a round-tripper by Jason Thompson, but the Indians got to Mark Fidrych for two runs in the fourth and then chased the Tigers' colorful rookie with two more runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded single by George Hendrick. John Hiller was the winner in relief.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 1 at New York (day game):
Three unearned runs enabled the Yankees to defeat the Red Sox, 4-1, behind the pitching of Ed Figueroa, who racked up his 13th victory of the season. In the second inning, after Thurman Munson doubled and Chris Chambliss walked, Rico Petrocelli booted a two-out grounder by Willie Randolph, loading the bases. Fred Stanley then singled, driving in two runs, and Mickey Rivers laid down a safe bunt for the third counter. The Yanks picked up their only untainted tally in the sixth when Munson doubled again and Graig Nettles singled. Jim Rice wrecked Figueroa's shutout bid with a homer in the eighth inning.

Royals 6, A's 5 at Oakland (day game):
Jacket Day drew 42,592, Oakland's largest crowd of the year, but the Athletics put on a fumbling performance, committing seven errors, and lost to the Royals, 6-5. The A's built up a 4-0 lead before the Royals erupted for all their runs in the sixth inning. Tom Poquette opened with a single and advanced on an error by Bill North. George Brett followed with a single. John Mayberry grounded to Phil Garner, who let the ball slip through his hands, allowing Poquette to score. Six more Royals then went to bat with the inning coming to a climax when Dave Nelson drove in two runs with a single.

[DH] Braves 5, Reds 4 (night game) / Reds 6, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Don Gullett and Jack Billingham combined to pitch the Reds to a 6-3 victory in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader after the Braves had won the first game, 5-4, before a Banner Day crowd of 50,419. In the opener, George Foster batted in the Reds' first two runs with a single and homer before the Braves rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead, but Ken Griffey tied the score by hitting a homer with a man on base in the eighth. However, in the Braves' half, Willie Montanez singled and scored the winning run on a double by Tom Paciorek. In the nightcap, the Reds' 10 hits included three for Dan Driessen, who drove in one run, and a homer by Mike Lum. Montanez had three hits and two RBIs for the Braves.

[DH] Astros 5, Giants 4 (night game) / Giants 4, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
The Astros scored in the 13th inning on a sacrifice fly by Bob Watson and won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-4, but then they collected only three hits off John D'Acquisto and Mike Caldwell in the second game and lost to the Giants, 4-0. The Astros had to come from behind twice in the opener, first overcoming a 3-0 deficit. The Giants broke a tie in the 10th with a pinch-homer by Gary Thomasson, but the Astros pulled even again in their half on singles by Enos Cabell and Leon Roberts around a sacrifice. In the 13th, Greg Gross doubled, Rob Andrews singled and, after an intentional pass to Cesar Cedeno, Watson hit his game-winning fly.

Mets 10, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Four pitchers for the Expos issued a total of 14 passes, making it easy for the Mets to walk their way to a 10-4 victory. Loser Clay Kirby, who passed six in 3 1/3 innings, issued four straight walks to force in the Mets' initial run in the opening frame. John Milner drove in three runs for the Mets with a grounder in the fourth and double in the fifth. Pepe Mangual walked with the bases loaded in the fifth and added two RBIs with a double in the eighth.

[DH] Pirates 8, Phillies 5 (night game) / Phillies 7, Pirates 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
After the Pirates won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-5, the Phillies came back behind the three-hit pitching of Steve Carlton to gain a 7-1 victory in the second game. Richie Zisk and Dave Parker each drove in two runs for the Pirates in the opener. The Pirates took command of the game with two out in the first inning by scoring four runs on a double by Al Oliver, triple by Willie Stargell, a walk, throwing error by Larry Christenson and singles by Zisk and Manny Sanguillen. Larry Bowa had four hits and Greg Luzinski three to lead the Phillies' support of Carlton in the nightcap. Luzinski's hits included a homer.

Padres 6, Dodgers 5 at San Diego (night game):
Reliever Butch Metzger, who pitched to only one batter, received credit for his eighth straight victory when the Padres scored in the ninth inning on a double by Dave Winfield to defeat the Dodgers, 6-5. Randy Jones started for the Padres but went out for a pinch-hitter in the seventh after giving up seven hits and all of the Dodgers' runs. The Padres, who were losing, 5-1, when Jones departed, rallied in the eighth inning to tie the score and take their ace lefthander off the hook.

Cardinals 12, Cubs 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Hector Cruz knocked in four runs with a homer and single to lead the Cardinals' 13-hit attack in a 12-3 victory over the Cubs. The game attracted 32,942, the Cardinals' second largest crowd of the season.
