Orioles 3, Yankees 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Doubles by Bobby Grich and Reggie Jackson and a single by Lee May produced two runs in the first inning and Al Bumbry hit a homer in the third to power the Orioles to a 3-1 victory over the Yankees. Ross Grimsley, completing his first game in nine starts, scattered six hits while outdueling Catfish Hunter.

Indians 9, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Designated hitter Rico Carty doubled, driving in two runs, to highlight a three-run seventh inning that clinched the Indians' 9-4 victory over the Red Sox. Carty also hit a two-run double in the first as the Bosox suffered their 12th loss in 14 games.

Royals 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Amos Otis hit a two-run double in the first inning to spark the Royals to a 4-0 triumph over the Angels behind the six-hit pitching of Al Fitzmorris. In posting his second shutout and 12th victory, Fitzmorris bested Nolan Ryan, who yielded four hits and had seven strikeouts to increase his major league-leading total to 184.

Tigers 4, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Tigers edged the Brewers, 4-3, when Ben Oglivie delivered his fourth single of the game, scoring Rusty Staub with two out in the 13th inning. Staub had singled and advanced to second on a single by Jason Thompson. The Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the 11th on a homer by Staub, but Hank Aaron homered in the bottom half of the frame for the Brewers. John Hiller gained the decision with 2 2/3 innings of two-hit relief after Jim Crawford replaced Frank MacCormick and worked 10 innings, retiring 22 successive hitters.

Rangers 3, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Bert Blyleven, making his first appearance against his former teammates, allowed only two hits in pitching the Rangers to a 3-0 triumph over the Twins. Toby Harrah hit his ninth homer of the season in the fourth. Blyleven had nine strikeouts in winning for the first time in six starts.

A's 3, White Sox 1 at Oakland (night game):
Bill North singled to open the last of the third inning, stole second and third bases, then scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Bert Campaneris as the Athletics defeated the White Sox, 3-1. The two stolen bases brought North's major league-leading total to 50. Paul Mitchell went 7 2/3 innings and gained his fourth straight victory with help from reliever Rollie Fingers.

Dodgers 6, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Don Sutton, reached for two runs in the first inning on two walks, a triple by Jim Wynn and single by Willie Montanez, settled down to pitch a five-hitter and the Dodgers overcame the Braves, 6-2. Sutton had nine strikeouts, bringing his career total to 2,007. Singles by Steve Garvey, who had four hits, and Bill Russell drove in two runs in the third inning, when the Dodgers went ahead to stay.

[DH] Expos 2, Cubs 1 (day game) / Expos 3, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by Ellis Valentine carried the Expos to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs in the first game of a doubleheader and the Expos also won the afterpiece, 3-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Steve Dunning and Dale Murray. Valentine's homer came in the sixth after Steve Stone had pitched five hitless innings. Larry Parrish hit two doubles and a single for the Expos in the second game.

Reds 9, Giants 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds lashed 16 hits in routing the Giants, 9-3. George Foster and Dan Driessen each had four hits and Pete Rose two, including his ninth home run. Fred Norman limited the Giants to seven hits while notching his ninth victory in 11 decisions. Rose's homer, off John Montefusco in the first inning, was his third leadoff homer in the last seven games.

Astros 7, Padres 0 at Houston (night game):
Larry Dierker pitched a two-hitter and Bob Watson collected three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs to lead the Astros to a 7-0 victory over the Padres. Dierker yielded a single to Enzo Hernandez in the third inning and a double to Johnny Grubb in the fourth as he recorded his third shutout of the season and 24th of his career.

Phillies 4, Mets 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies scored two runs in the sixth inning, then added two more in the eighth to support the six-hit pitching of Larry Christenson and Tug McGraw in a 4-1 victory over the Mets. Dave Cash tripled to start the home half of the sixth and scored on Larry Bowa's sacrifice fly. Mike Schmidt followed with a double, his sixth successive hit over two games, took third after Greg Luzinski flied out and scored on Jon Matlack's wild pitch. In the eighth, McGraw doubled and scored on a triple by Cash. When Felix Millan failed to handle the throw from the outfield, Cash came in to score the Phillies' fourth run.
