Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 6, Indians 4 at Boston (day game):
Bob Montgomery scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning and then drove in a run with a double in the seventh to insure a 6-4 victory for the Red Sox over the Indians. The Red Sox catcher, subbing for injured Carlton Fisk, singled in the sixth and moved to third on a single by Rick Burleson and sacrifice by Denny Doyle before crossing the plate on a wild pitch by Don Hood. An inning later, Dwight Evans doubled and scored on Montgomery's two-bagger.
Orioles 1, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
The victim of an unearned run, Mark Fidrych, the Tigers' colorful rookie, lost to the Orioles, 1-0, in a duel with Rudy May. The Orioles picked up their run in the fourth inning. With one away Bobby Grich singled, took third on a single by Lee May and then was thrown out at plate on a grounder by Ken Singleton. After Tony Muser walked to load the bases, Mark Belanger tapped to Pedro Garcia and when the second baseman fumbled the ball, May scored.
Twins 2, Rangers 1 at Minnesota (day game):
In a meeting of two former Arizona State University teammates, Eddie Bane gained the decision over Jim Umbarger when the Twins edged the Rangers, 2-1. Bane pitched five innings before giving way to Bill Campbell, who finished and picked up his 10th save of the season. The Twins counted the deciding run in the fourth on singles by Butch Wynegar and Glenn Borgmann around a sacrifice by Steve Brye.
Reds 9, Padres 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
George Foster smashed a three-run homer and Joe Morgan, who had a homer, double and two walks, scored four times as the Reds defeated the Padres, 9-3. Foster's blow in the first inning followed a single by Ken Griffey and pass to Morgan. Morgan counted again after drawing another pass in the third, drove in a run with his double and scored himself in the sixth before accounting for the Reds' last tally with his homer in the eighth.
Pirates 2, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
With no chance for a play at the plate, the Mets had to settle for a double play in the 10th inning while Rennie Stennett scored the run that gave the Pirates a 2-1 victory. The Pirates counted initially on singles by Al Oliver and Bill Robinson and an infield out by Dave Parker in the fourth. The Mets, who had been held scoreless for 24 innings, broke their drouth in the ninth when Joe Torre was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. However in the 10th, Stennett led off with a single and raced to third on a single by Oliver. Robinson then grounded into a double play, started by Bud Harrelson, as Stennett crossed the plate with the deciding run.
Phillies 3, Cubs 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
Scoring an unearned run with two out in the 11th inning, the Phillies edged the Cubs, 3-2. The Cubs held a 2-1 lead before Greg Luzinski homered to tie the score in the sixth. In the 11th, Ollie Brown drew a one-out walk and tagged up and raced to second after Garry Maddox was out on a long fly to center field. Jerry Martin grounded to Bill Madlock and was safe on the third baseman's error. Tim McCarver then singled to drive in Brown with the winning run.
