Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 6, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Homers by Mickey Rivers and Carlos May, accounting for five runs, powered the Yankees to a 6-4 victory over the Red Sox. Rivers connected for the circuit with a man on base in the third inning, but the Red Sox came back to take a 4-2 lead before Rivers doubled in the eighth, Roy White walked and Thurman Munson singled to drive in Rivers. With two out, May smashed his homer for three runs to provide the winning blow.

Angels 3, White Sox 0 at California (night game):
Ending his personal four-game losing streak, Nolan Ryan allowed only three hits, struck out 10 and pitched the Angels to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox. The shutout was the fourth to Ryan's credit this year. The Angels were held in check by Ken Brett until the seventh inning when they broke loose to score their runs on singles by Ron Jackson, Dave Collins and Jerry Remy and a double by Bobby Bonds.

Orioles 7, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
The Orioles extended their winning streak to five games and posted their 10th victory in a row on the road by defeating the Tigers, 7-3. Doug DeCinces homered for the Orioles in the second inning and Lee May hit for the circuit with two aboard in the fifth. Mickey Stanley, who had only one homer to his credit previously this season, produced all of the Tigers' tallies with a pair of round-trippers.

Royals 2, Rangers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Tom Poquette, who has been a red-hot hitter against the Rangers this season, with 13 hits in 21 times at bat, collected three singles and drove in the tie-breaking run in the fifth inning to win the game for the Royals, 2-1. The Rangers collected only three hits off Dennis Leonard, who pitched 8 1/3 innings before leaving the game with a blister on his pitching hand. Steve Mingori and Mark Littell then each retired one batter. Poquette's game-winning single drove in Frank White, who had tripled with two out in the fifth.

Indians 7, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Making his first start since July 11, Dennis Eckersley allowed six hits and struck out 12 as the Indians defeated the Brewers, 7-2, in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader that was stopped by rain with two out in the top of the eighth. The second game was postponed. Mike Hegan homered with a man on base for the Brewers' runs off Eckersley. The Indians, after picking up a pair of tainted tallies on three errors in the first inning, knocked out Eduardo Rodriguez in the fourth and scored four times on doubles by Buddy Bell, Duane Kuiper and Rick Manning and singles by Tommy Smith and Alan Ashby.

Twins 8, A's 7 at Minnesota (night game):
Trailing, 7-1, the Twins erupted for five runs in the fifth inning, including a grand-slam homer by Butch Wynegar, and added two more runs in the eighth to defeat the Athletics, 8-7. In the fifth, singles by Dan Ford, Bob Randall and Roy Smalley accounted for one run. After Rod Carew was safe on an error to load the bases, Wynegar connected for the first jackpot wallop of his major league career. In the eighth, Craig Kusick singled and yielded the paths to Jerry Terrell, who stole second. Ford walked. Steve Braun delivered a pinch-single, scoring Terrell and sending Ford to third. Larry Hisle followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 6 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs hit three homers, capping their attack with a round-tripper by George Mitterwald in the eighth inning, to outlast the Cardinals, 7-6. Jose Cardenal hit a solo swat in the fourth and Pete LaCock connected with two men on base in the sixth before Mitterwald provided the decisive blow. The Cards had homers by Willie Crawford and Joe Ferguson.

[DH] Reds 13, Padres 8 (night game) / Reds 4, Padres 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench, who hit a double and sacrifice fly in the first game and his first homer since July 3 in the second game, drove in six of the Reds' runs in a 13-8 and 4-2 sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Padres. Manny Sarmiento, relieving for the Reds on his first day after being recalled from Indianapolis (American Association), gained his maiden major league victory in the opener. The Padres started the lidlifter with a four-run outburst against Don Gullett, but the Reds hammered three Padre pitchers for 11 of their 13 hits and all of their 13 runs in the first three innings. Bench accounted for four RBIs and Cesar Geronimo drove in three. George Foster batted in two runs and added two more with a homer in the third inning of the nightcap to raise his season's RBI total to 90. Bench's homer in the second was the 250th of the All-Star catcher's major league career. Padres' runs included a circuit clout by Willie Davis.

Braves 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Andy Messersmith allowed five hits and helped himself at bat with a double while pitching the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Astros. Messersmith fanned seven and reached the 1,500 mark for his career strikeouts. After the Astros picked up a run in the first inning, Vic Correll and Messersmith hit back-to-back doubles to tie the score in the fifth. With two outs, Jim Wynn singled to drive in Messersmith. Rod Gilbreath then hit his first homer of the season for the Braves' deciding run in the eighth, offsetting an Astros' tally in the ninth.

Mets 3, Phillies 2 at New York (night game):
Although faltering in the ninth inning, Jerry Koosman survived a Phillies' rally and pitched the Mets to a 3-2 victory. The Mets scored all their runs off Jim Kaat in the first on a double by Leon Brown, safe bunt by Bruce Boisclair, single by John Milner, sacrifice fly by Joe Torre and single by Felix Millan. Koosman allowed only two infield hits by Johnny Oates until the ninth when the Phillies struck for their runs with two out on a walk to Mike Schmidt, double by Greg Luzinski and single by Ollie Brown, but Koosman then bore down and retired Jerry Martin on an infield grounder for the final out.

Pirates 4, Expos 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Winning for the third straight time in extra innings, the Pirates counted on a single by Manny Sanguillen in the 13th and defeated the Expos, 4-3. Willie Stargell, who had previously scored twice in the game, led off the decisive stanza with a single and stopped at third on a double by Dave Parker before Sanguillen rapped his winning single.

Giants 5, Dodgers 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants erupted for all their scoring in the third inning with a two-run single by Gary Thomasson and three-run homer by Gary Matthews to defeat the Dodgers, 5-3. Chris Speier and Dave Rader singled and Charlie Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases and set the stage for the Giants' scoring.
