Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Aurelio Rodriguez homered with a man on base in the second inning and helped knock out Jim Palmer with a run-scoring double in the sixth as the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 5-4. Reggie Jackson hit a two-run homer for the Orioles in the first before Rodriguez tied the score with his smash in the second. The Tigers added a run on a double by Willie Horton in the third and put the game away with a pair in the sixth on a single by Alex Johnson, double by Rodriguez and single by Bill Freehan.
[DH] Red Sox 4, Yankees 2 (day game) / Red Sox 6, Yankees 4 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox drew 28,799 for the day game and 26,637 for the night game for a total of 55,436 to watch them defeat the Yankees twice, 4-2 and 6-4. In the sunshine contest, Bob Montgomery hit his first homer of the year and also drove in a run with a single to support the pitching of Fergie Jenkins, who gained his 10th victory. The catcher's circuit clout in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie. When the clubs met again under the lights, Jim Rice was the batting standout for the Red Sox, knocking in three runs with a double and two singles. Cecil Cooper added a homer to the Red Sox cause in the victory over Catfish Hunter. Mickey Rivers stole three bases to bring his season's total to 34, most for any Yankee player since Ben Chapman pilfered 38 in 1932.
Angels 3, White Sox 2 at California (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Mario Guerrero with the bases loaded and one out in the 11th inning scored Rusty Torres and gave the Angels a 3-2 victory over the White Sox. Ralph Garr doubled and Jim Spencer homered for the White Sox' runs in the fourth. The Angels came back with a homer by Bill Melton in the fifth and tied the score with a single by Dan Briggs and double by Dave Collins in the eighth. Bobby Bonds opened the 11th with a triple. The White Sox then issued intentional passes to Torres and Melton to load the bases. The strategy worked for one out when Leroy Stanton forced Bonds at the plate, but Guerrero then ended the game with his scoring fly.
Rangers 4, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Bert Blyleven survived a ninth-inning threat and posted his second straight complete-game victory, pitching the Rangers past the Royals, 4-2. Gene Clines, Joe Lahoud and Juan Beniquez each batted in one run and scored one for the Rangers. Blyleven gave up three hits and walked two in the ninth before emerging with his decision. Dave Nelson drove in one of the Royals' runs with a single and the other was forced home when Tom Poquette drew a pass with the bases loaded.
[DH] Indians 2, Brewers 0 (night game) / Brewers 6, Indians 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Bibby and Jim Kern, who relieved in the ninth inning, combined to pitch the Indians to a 2-0 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but Kern returned to the mound in the second game and uncorked a wild throw in the 12th inning that enabled the Brewers to gain a split with a 6-5 victory. The Indians scored their initial run in the opener on a walk to Buddy Bell, a stolen base and single by Frank Duffy in the fourth inning. Their other run in the eighth was unearned on two passed balls by Charlie Moore. Bibby was lifted after giving up two singles with one out in the ninth and Kern retired the last two batters. Kern, relieving again in the 12th inning of the nightcap, walked Moore, uncorked a wild pitch and passed Robin Yount. Don Money then bounced a grounder to Kern, who slipped while fielding the ball and made an off-balance throw past first base, allowing Moore to score with the Brewers' winning run.
Twins 6, A's 5 at Minnesota (day game):
The streaking Twins gained their fifth straight victory and 10th in the last 12 games when Dan Ford hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to beat the Athletics, 6-5. Joe Rudi and Gene Tenace each drove in two runs and Billy Williams homered for the A's, who held a 5-4 lead until the Twins decided the outcome when Mike Cubbage was safe on an error in the eighth and Ford smashed his round-tripper off Stan Bahnsen.
Cubs 6, Cardinals 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs knocked out Lynn McGlothen and continued their attack on Al Hrabosky while scoring four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 6-2. Joe Wallis singled, Jose Cardenal beat out an infield hit and Bill Madlock doubled for a run that broke a 2-2 tie. Hrabosky, relieving, walked Jerry Morales intentionally. Wayne Tyrone batted for Pete LaCock and drove in two runs with a single before George Mitterwald hit a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Reds 12, Padres 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Ed Armbrister, making a rare appearance as a starter in the Reds' outfield, smashed his first two homers of the season, plus two singles, to lead a 19-hit attack in a 12-1 walloping of the Padres. Dave Concepcion shared batting honors with Armbrister, also rapping four hits. Fred Norman limited the Padres to four hits in gaining his 10th victory.
[DH] Astros 2, Braves 1 (night game) / Astros 9, Braves 6 at Houston (night game):
After J.R. Richard and Jose Cruz combined to win the first game, 2-1, the Astros took advantage of Mike Marshall's wildness and scored three runs in the eighth inning to win the second game, 9-6, completing a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Braves. Richard pitched a four-hitter in the opener and Cruz scored both of the Astros' runs. In the second, Cruz beat out an infield hit, stole second, moved to third after a long fly by Ed Herrmann and scored on a single by Rob Andrews. A double by Cruz led to the other run in the sixth. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Cruz beat the throw home on a grounder by Herrmann. In the nightcap, Joe Sambito gained his first major league victory as the third of four Houston pitchers. In the eighth, when the Astros scored their winning margin, Greg Gross singled and went around to third on a sacrifice and infield out before racing home on a wild pitch by Marshall. Bob Watson singled and counted on singles by Cruz and Andrews. Another wild pitch by Marshall then admitted Cruz with the Astros' final tally.
Phillies 2, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
A two-run double by Johnny Oates in the fifth inning carried the Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the Mets, who scored their lone run on a homer by John Milner in the opening frame. In the fifth, Ollie Brown and Garry Maddox singled and Bobby Tolan sacrificed before Oates rifled his double off Jon Matlack.
Expos 7, Pirates 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Taking advantage of two errors, the Expos scored twice on a double by Tim Foli in the eighth inning to defeat the Pirates, 7-6. Andre Thornton homered for the Expos in the seventh, but the Pirates, who earlier had a round-tripper by Dave Parker, erupted for three runs in their half of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. However in the eighth, Larry Parrish reached base with one out when Willie Stargell dropped a throw from Richie Hebner. Bob Moose then booted a grounder by Earl Williams before Foli doubled for the Expos' game-winner.
Giants 6, Dodgers 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants scored four runs off Doug Rau in the first inning on five consecutive hits plus a sacrifice fly, and then proceeded to beat the Dodgers, 6-3. Marty Perez doubled and scored on a single by Gary Matthews before Bobby Murcer made it 3-0 with a homer. Ken Reitz and Chris Speier followed with singles and Darrell Evans accounted for the fourth run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.
