Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Backed by the batting of Doug DeCinces and Ken Singleton, Wayne Garland won his 13th game of the season, but first since July 20, as the Orioles defeated the Indians, 6-2. DeCinces hit a homer in the third inning and drove in two runs with a triple in the eighth. In between, Singleton accounted for two RBIs with a double in the sixth.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Although having a big advantage in hits, 13-7, the Tigers were the victims of three double plays while losing to the Red Sox, 5-4. Each club hit two homers. Aurelio Rodriguez connected with a man on base for the Tigers in the second inning, but the Red Sox picked up the tying tallies and then went ahead when Rick Miller walked and Butch Hobson hit for the circuit in the sixth. Jim Rice added a homer in the eighth for what proved to be the winning run, offsetting a round-tripper by Bill Freehan for the Tigers in the ninth.

Royals 6, Twins 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Slump-ridden Fred Patek batted in two runs with a single in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and sent the Royals on their way to a 6-4 victory over the Twins. Patek's hit was only his eighth since the All-Star break and the RBIs were his first since July 3. George Brett had three hits for the Royals, marking the 22nd time that the All-Star third baseman had rapped three or more hits in one game this season.

Brewers 9, Yankees 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
George Scott hit two doubles and a homer to lead the Brewers to a 9-3 victory over the Yankees in a game halted by rain after six innings. Scott doubled and scored in the first and fourth before hitting his homer with two men on base in the sixth.

Rangers 1, Angels 0 at Texas (night game):
Posting his fourth shutout of the season, Bert Blyleven extended his personal winning streak to three games by pitching the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Angels. Gary Ross, who was the loser, allowed only five hits to six given up by Blyleven. In the second inning, a looper by Jeff Burroughs fell between Dan Briggs and Dave Chalk for a double. After taking third on a bunt by Tom Grieve, Burroughs scored on a sacrifice fly.

Giants 2, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Swinging at Phil Niekro's second pitch of the game, Gary Thomasson hit a homer and then doubled and scored in the third inning to bring the Giants a 2-1 victory over the Braves. Marty Perez followed Thomasson's two-bagger with a safe bunt and Bobby Murcer drove in a run with a grounder. Jim Barr held the Braves to three hits in seven innings before Randy Moffitt relieved and finished the game.

Reds 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Fred Norman gained his fifth straight victory and Don Sutton was stopped on his five-game winning streak when the Reds defeated the Dodgers, 3-2. The Reds opened their scoring with a double by Pete Rose and single by George Foster in the third inning. Tony Perez walked and scored in the fourth before accounting for the Reds' deciding run with a homer in the sixth. The Dodgers got both their tallies in the home half of the sixth on singles by Bill Buckner, Steve Garvey and Ron Cey and a double by Bill Russell.

Cubs 4, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Homers by George Mitterwald and Rick Monday, plus two unearned runs, enabled the Cubs to defeat the Expos, 4-3, in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader. The second game was rained out in the bottom half of the second inning. Mitterwald and Monday hit their homers in the third. Then in the fifth, after singles by Mitterwald and Mick Kelleher, Ray Burris bunted and when Don Stanhouse threw the ball into left field trying for a forceout, both runners scored. The Expos had back-to-back doubles by Tim Foli and Gary Carter for a run in their half of the fifth and added their other tallies when Del Unser homered with a man on base in the sixth.

Mets 7, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Although Willie Stargell smashed a grand-slam homer for the Pirates, the Mets were able to gain a 7-4 victory with a 17-hit attack that included four for Bud Harrelson and three each for Joe Torre and Roy Staiger. The Mets scored four runs in the fourth inning, two counting on a double by Leo Foster, and built up a 6-0 lead before Willie Stargell hit his homer off Jon Matlack in the sixth following infield singles by Mario Mendoza and Rennie Stennett and a walk to Dave Parker. Staiger wrapped up the Mets' scoring with a homer in the seventh.

Padres 4, Astros 3 at San Diego (night game):
Dave Freisleben ended his personal eight-game losing streak when the Padres defeated the Astros, 4-3. The Padres started their scoring with a homer by Doug Rader in the fourth inning and added their other runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Rader, single by Tito Fuentes and squeeze bunt by Freisleben. Butch Metzger relieved Freisleben with two men on base and one out in the ninth and gave up hits by Leon Roberts and Enos Cabell for Astros' runs before retiring the side.

Phillies 5, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Capitalizing on Lynn McGlothen's loss of control, the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 5-2, in a game stopped by rain after eight innings. Rain forced a delay of one hour, 33 minutes in the second before Hector Cruz accounted for the Cards' runs with a homer. Ollie Brown hit for the circuit to open the Phillies' fifth. McGlothen then walked Tim McCarver, Larry Bowa and Dave Cash to load the bases before Garry Maddox singled to drive in two runs. Bill Greif relieved and was tagged for a single by Greg Luzinski, driving in the Phils' fourth run of the inning.
