Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Brewers 1 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox gained their seventh victory in the last eight games when Carl Yastrzemski drove in one run with a double in the fourth inning and another with a single in the eighth to defeat the Brewers, 2-1.

[DH] Royals 9, White Sox 2 (night game) / Royals 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Andy Hassler, who had lost 18 straight games over two seasons, finally gained a victory when the Royals won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-2, before going on to beat the White Sox again in the second game, 8-3. Hassler's triumph with the help of Mark Littell, who relieved in the eighth inning, enabled the lefthander to avoid tying the A. L. record of 19 defeats in a row by John Nabors of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1916. The Royals, held hitless for the first five innings, batted around in the sixth and scored five runs on seven hits, including a triple by George Brett and double by Al Cowens. Dave Nelson homered with a man on base for the Royals in the ninth. Ruppert Jones drove in three runs in the second game and John Mayberry hit his first homer since July 2 as the Royals completed the sweep.

Tigers 3, Indians 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers ended their five-game losing streak by defeating the Indians, 3-1, behind the pitching of Dave Roberts. Rusty Staub started the Tigers' scoring with a homer in the fourth inning. Singles by Tom Veryzer and Ron LeFlore around a stolen base added a tally in the seventh and the Tigers' third run followed in the eighth on a walk to Jason Thompson and double by Aurelio Rodriguez.

Angels 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
A run-scoring single by Bobby Bonds in the eighth inning gave the Angels a 2-1 victory over the Athletics in a duel between Frank Tanana and Vida Blue. Bill North led off with a homer for the A's run and Bill Melton tied the score with a homer in the seventh. Mario Guerrero singled to open the eighth and gave way to pinch-runner Jerry Remy, who stole second. After a pass to Dave Chalk, Bonds stroked his single.

Rangers 6, Twins 0 at Texas (night game):
While Gaylord Perry was pitching a five-hit shutout, the Rangers enjoyed a pair of three-run innings and defeated the Twins, 6-0. Gene Clines doubled to open the first, Mike Hargrove singled and when Roy Smalley erred on a grounder by Jeff Burroughs, Clines scored. Toby Harrah singled to drive in Hargrove. Pete Redfern, the Twins' starter, then walked two batters to force in the Rangers' third run. Their other burst came in the eighth and included a homer by Roy Howell and two-run single by Tom Grieve.

Braves 7, Giants 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Willie Montanez smashed a homer and three singles to back up Carl Morton's four-hit pitching as the Braves defeated the Giants, 7-0. The complete game and shutout both were the first of the season for Morton.

Reds 7, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Sparked by Joe Morgan, who broke a 3-3 tie with a homer, the Reds scored four runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Dodgers, 7-4. The Reds capitalized on an error by Reggie Smith to score three unearned runs in the third and held a 3-2 lead before Ron Cey tied the score with a homer in the sixth. After Morgan's blow broke the deadlock in the ninth, the Reds loaded the bases and scored two runs on singles by Dave Concepcion and Pete Rose.

[DH] Cubs 6, Expos 5 (night game) / Cubs 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Homers by Rick Monday in the 13th inning of the first game and by Jerry Morales in the ninth inning of the second game powered the Cubs to 6-5 and 1-0 victories over the Expos in a twi-night doubleheader.

Padres 9, Astros 3 at San Diego (night game):
Tom Griffin, obtained from the Astros on waivers only three days previously, turned on his former teammates and received credit for a 9-3 victory with the support of a 16-hit attack by the Padres. Griffin tired in the seventh inning and Butch Metzger finished to pick up his 10th save of the season. Fred Kendall had four hits in five trips in the Padres' attack and drove in four runs, while Jerry Turner, who went 4-for-4 including a homer, accounted for three RBIs. Mike Ivie also hit a homer.

Cardinals 6, Phillies 2 at St. Louis (night game):
John Denny, the only Cardinals' starter over the .500 mark, brought his record to 6-5 by defeating the Phillies, 6-2, with the help of Al Hrabosky, who relieved in the eighth inning. The Cards, after taking a 2-1 lead against Jim Lonborg, decided the outcome with three runs in the seventh off Tug McGraw, who hurt himself with an error. After singles by Keith Hernandez and Hector Cruz, Lee Richard bunted safely and when McGraw threw wildly, two runs scored. Richard reached third and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Mumphrey. Ted Simmons added a run with a homer in the eighth.
