Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Twins 0 at Baltimore (night game):
The first A. L. pitcher to win 15 games this season, Jim Palmer yielded only one hit while pitching the Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the Twins. Mike Cubbage singled in second inning for the Twins' safety. A walk to Ken Singleton and double by Tony Muser produced the Orioles' initial run in the second inning. Mark Belanger registered the other counter by doubling in the fifth, taking third on a flyout and crossing the plate on a passed ball by Butch Wynegar.

Angels 5, Red Sox 4 at California (night game):
The Angels rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, with their winning tally coming on an error, to defeat the Red Sox, 5-4. Tony Solaita, who had hit a two-run homer in the sixth, led off the ninth with a double. After a bunt by Leroy Stanton, pinch-runner Rusty Torres came home on a sacrifice fly by Bob Jones to tie the score. The Angels kept the inning going with singles by Terry Humphrey and Ron Jackson. Tommy Davis then hit a grounder to Butch Hobson and when the third baseman threw wildly, trying for a forceout at second, Humphrey scored the winning run.

[DH] Tigers 7, Rangers 5 (night game) / Rangers 3, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Rusty Staub, who raised his career RBI total to 1,002, drove in three runs with a double in the eighth inning to bring the Tigers a 7-5 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Bengals' bats were stilled in the second game as they lost to the Rangers, 3-0. Jason Thompson also had three RBIs for the Tigers in the lidlifter, driving in runs with a single, fielder's choice and homer. Two Ranger relievers blew a 5-4 lead in the eighth. Jeff Terpko issued two walks and Joe Hoerner gave up another to load the bases before Staub lashed his triple. Dave Lemanczyk, who started and lost the previous night's game to the Rangers, returned in relief of Dave Roberts, pitched four scoreless innings and gained credit for the victory. Steve Hargan, making only his sixth start of the season, hurled the shutout for the Rangers in the nightcap. Tom Grieve homered in the second inning and doubled and scored in the fourth to lead the Rangers at bat.

Yankees 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Thurman Munson broke the Yankees' four-game losing streak by smashing a homer with two out in the 11th inning to beat the Royals, 2-1. The homer was only the second given up by Steve Mingori, Royals' reliever, this season. The Yankees counted their initial run in the fourth on singles by Lou Piniella and Chris Chambliss, together with a sacrifice fly by Graig Nettles. Al Cowens hit an inside-the-park homer for the Royals to tie the score in the seventh.

A's 2, Brewers 1 at Oakland (night game):
A single by Joe Rudi in the ninth inning for the 1,000th hit of his major league career paved the way for an unearned run that enabled the Athletics to nip the Brewers, 2-1. The A's scored initially on singles by Billy Williams, Ken McMullen and Bill North in the third and the Brewers tied the score in the fourth with a walk to Charlie Moore, single by George Scott and sacrifice fly by Sixto Lezcano. In the ninth, Rudi yielded the paths to pinch-runner Matt Alexander after hitting his single. Sal Bando then bunted to Jim Slaton, who threw to first, but Gary Sutherland, who was covering on the play, let the ball get through him and Alexander raced around the bases to score the A's winning run.

Cubs 6, Reds 3 at Chicago (day game):
Getting a lift from batterymate Steve Swisher, who hit a three-run homer in the second inning, Ray Burris gained credit for his fifth straight victory when the Cubs defeated the Reds, 6-3. Swisher's blow followed singles by Pete LaCock and Manny Trillo. The Cubs added a run in the fifth on a single by Rick Monday and double by Jose Cardenal before the Reds got all their counters on a single by Ken Griffey and homers by Joe Morgan and Dan Driessen in the sixth. The Cubs came back to clinch the decision with two runs in their half of the sixth on a single by LaCock and doubles by Rob Sperring and Mick Kelleher. Bruce Sutter pitched the last 1 2/3 innings in relief of Burris and picked up his sixth save.

Expos 3, Giants 2 at Montreal (night game):
Atoning for two errors on one play in the seventh inning, Earl Williams drove in a run with a triple in the bottom half of the frame to give the Expos a 3-2 victory over the Giants. Larry Parrish accounted for the Expos' first two runs with a homer in the third. The Giants, who had scored a run on a single by Ken Reitz in the second, pulled even in the seventh when Williams, playing first base, bobbled a grounder by Darrell Evans and then threw wildly. Evans reached third and scored on a double by Reitz. However, Williams came back with his triple to drive in Gary Carter with the Expos' winning run.

Mets 5, Padres 4 at New York (night game):
Randy Jones, the Padres' 18-game winner, suffered his third straight defeat and seventh of the season, losing to the Mets, 5-4, in an encounter with Jerry Koosman, who raised his record to 14-7 with his eighth victory in his last nine starts. The Mets jumped on Jones for four runs in the second inning with Koosman hitting a single to account for two RBIs. The Padres came back with a four-run rally in the third and the tie persisted until the eighth when the Mets broke the deadlock. Joe Torre led off with a single and gave way to pinch-runner Leo Foster. Jerry Grote sacrificed. Foster stopped at third on a single by Roy Staiger and crossed the plate on a single by pinch-hitter John Milner.

Braves 2, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Phil Niekro drove in his own winning run with a double in the seventh inning but then needed relief help in the ninth before the Braves defeated the Phillies, 2-1. Singles by Willie Montanez, Cito Gaston and Dave May produced the Braves' first run in the fifth. Vic Correll tripled with two out in the seventh and scored on Niekro's double. The Phillies began the ninth with a safe bunt by Mike Schmidt and pass to Greg Luzinski. Mike Marshall, in relief, picked Schmidt off second, but gave up a single by Jay Johnstone. Adrian Devine took over and retired the side after Larry Bowa singled to drive in the Phillies' run.

Dodgers 5, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Dodgers rebounded from their no-hit loss to John Candelaria in the previous night's game and defeated the Pirates, 5-1, to snap a six-game losing streak. The Dodgers loaded the bases against Jerry Reuss on two hits and an error in the fourth inning and scored their first two runs on a single by Lee Lacy and sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker. Another bases-loaded situation developed in the fifth and this time Ron Cey tripled to clear the sacks. The Pirates' lone run came on a homer by Bill Robinson in the seventh.

Cardinals 8, Astros 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals jumped on Bo McLaughlin for four runs in the first inning and beat the Astros, 8-1, behind the pitching of Lynn McGlothen, who turned in his first complete-game victory since July 2. Lou Brock doubled, Ted Simmons walked, Keith Hernandez tripled and Joe Ferguson, Don Kessinger and Hector Cruz singled in the Cards' first-inning outburst. Hernandez batted in a run with a single in the fifth for his third RBI of the game when the Cardinals scored three times to wrap up the decision.
