Twins 2, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Dan Ford drove in both of the Twins' runs in support of Bill Singer, who pitched a five-hitter and defeated the Orioles, 2-0. Ford hit a sacrifice fly for the first run after the Twins had loaded the bases on singles by Lyman Bostock, Mike Cubbage and Larry Hisle in the second inning. Cubbage doubled in the fifth, stopped at third on a single by Hisle and scored the Twins' other run on a single by Ford.
Angels 6, Red Sox 0 at California (night game):
Frank Tanana allowed only two hits, struck out 10 and pitched the Angels to a 6-0 victory over the Red Sox. The Angels, after taking a 2-0 lead, clinched the verdict with a four-run outburst in the seventh inning that included consecutive doubles by Dave Collins, Jerry Remy and Bruce Bochte.
Indians 4, White Sox 3 at Cleveland (night game):
A single by Rick Manning in the 10th inning drove in Duane Kuiper and gave the Indians a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. Tommy Smith batted the Indians to an early 2-1 lead, driving in one run with a single in the second and hitting a homer in the fifth. The Indians made it 3-1 with a triple by Manning and single by Rico Carty in the sixth before the White Sox tied the score in the ninth on a single by Pat Kelly, triple by Jack Brohamer and single by Bucky Dent. In the 10th, Kuiper singled, Larvell Blanks sacrificed and Manning won the game with his single.
Tigers 4, Rangers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Pinch-hitting in the ninth inning, Willie Horton came through with a homer for the Tigers to enable Mark Fidrych to defeat the Rangers, 4-3, for the sensational rookie's 13th victory of the season. Mike Hargrove scored the Rangers' first two runs, crossing the plate on a passed ball in the second and hitting a homer in the fourth. Rusty Staub likewise accounted for the Tigers' first two tallies with a single in the third and homer in the fifth. Aurelio Rodriguez tripled and Alex Johnson singled to put the Tigers ahead in the sixth, but the Rangers tied the score in the seventh with a walk, sacrifice and single by Gene Clines.
Yankees 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
With a triple by Fred Stanley as the payoff blow, the Yankees scored all their runs in the second inning to defeat the Royals, 5-3. The Royals also did all their scoring in one stanza, taking the lead in the first with three runs, including a homer by Amos Otis with a man on base. Chris Chambliss and Carlos May opened the Yankee second with singles. After Graig Nettles flied out, Oscar Gamble grounded to John Mayberry, who threw wildly to second trying to start a double play, and Chambliss scored. Willie Randolph singled, driving in May. Stanley then hit his triple, scoring Gamble and Randolph, before crossing the plate himself on a sacrifice fly by Mickey Rivers.
A's 8, Brewers 5 at Oakland (night game):
Don Baylor batted in three runs and Ken McMullen accounted for two as the Athletics defeated the Brewers, 8-5. Bert Campaneris rapped four singles in four trips and scored twice. Campaneris was on base when Baylor homered in the first inning. McMullen connected for the circuit in the second. Mike Torrez gained his 10th victory but needed last-out help from Rollie Fingers after the Brewers rallied for all their runs in the ninth, two scoring on a homer by Gorman Thomas.
Reds 13, Cubs 10 at Chicago (day game):
In a fantastic comeback, the Reds wiped out a nine-run deficit and defeated the Cubs, 13-10, in 10 innings. The Cubs opened with two runs in the first and scored seven times in the second while collecting eight straight hits. The Reds picked up an unearned run in the third, but the Cubs made it 10-1 in their half. The Reds began to rally in the sixth with a two-run homer by Tony Perez. Johnny Bench hit for the circuit with two men on base in the seventh and another run followed on a single by Perez and double by Cesar Geronimo. In the eighth, Bench accounted for his fourth RBI of the game with a single, cutting the Cubs' lead to 10-8, before Dave Concepcion singled in the ninth and Ken Griffey homered with two out to tie the score and send the game into overtime. Bench was safe on an error by Mick Kelleher in the 10th. Pinch-runner Ed Armbrister stopped at second on a single by Perez. On a pickoff play, Perez was caught off first, but Pete LaCock threw wildly in the rundown and Armbrister raced home with the Reds' go-ahead run. Concepcion singled to score Perez and Doug Flynn capped the comeback with a triple, driving in Concepcion.
Expos 9, Giants 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos erupted for six runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Giants, 9-3, behind the pitching of Woodie Fryman, who turned in his first complete game in 23 starts this season. Gary Carter homered in the third inning and Wayne Garrett drove in a run with a single before the Expos broke the game apart in the sixth. A single by Garrett, an error on a bunt by Ellis Valentine and single by Larry Parrish started the scoring in the stanza. Tim Foli followed with a two-run double and scored on a single by Del Unser. Carter tripled to drive in Unser and Fryman capped the inning with a single, scoring Carter.
Mets 2, Padres 1 at New York (night game):
The wildness of Tom Griffin loaded the bases in the first inning and Mike Vail capitalized on the opportunity with a two-run double to enable the Mets to defeat the Padres, 2-1. Griffin walked Bruce Boisclair and John Milner and hit Joe Torre with a pitch before Vail rapped his two-bagger. The Padres counted off Jon Matlack in the fifth on singles by Fred Kendall and Enzo Hernandez around an infield out. Matlack was lifted in the eighth with two men on base and one out. Skip Lockwood relieved and put down the Padres' threat.
Phillies 4, Braves 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies took advantage of two throwing errors by Jerry Royster and one by Darrel Chaney to score three unearned runs and defeat the Braves, 4-1. With the score tied, 1-1, Garry Maddox doubled with one out in the fifth. Mike Schmidt grounded to Royster, who made a bad throw to second attempting to catch Maddox off base. Greg Luzinski then forced Maddox at third, but Royster again threw wildly trying to complete the double play, Schmidt scoring. Jay Johnstone and Tommy Hutton followed with singles to drive in Luzinski. The Phillies added a third unearned run in the sixth. Tony Taylor singled, advanced on a groundout by Dave Cash and scored when Chaney threw the ball away on a grounder by Maddox.
Dodgers 2, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bringing his record to 10-1, Rick Rhoden allowed only five hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 2-0 victory over the Pirates. Davey Lopes drew a walk to lead off the game, stole second and scored on a single by Bill Buckner. Ron Cey added a homer for the Dodgers' other run in the seventh.
Astros 8, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Led by Bob Watson and Ken Boswell, who batted in two runs apiece, the Astros defeated the Cardinals, 8-1. Larry Dierker, who hurled the route for the Astros, beat the Cards for the third time this season. Watson knocked in his runs with singles in the first and third innings. Boswell picked up his two RBIs with a double in the seventh.
