Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 12, White Sox 5 at Chicago (night game):
The Red Sox erupted for six runs in the third inning and five in the seventh en route to a 12-5 triumph over the White Sox that ended a three-game losing streak. Consecutive singles by Rick Burleson, Denny Doyle, Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice, Cecil Cooper and Carlton Fisk spiced the third inning uprising. Luis Tiant, with four innings of relief by Bill Lee, was credited with his fourth victory of the season against the White Sox.

Royals 6, Indians 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Marty Pattin limited the Indians to three hits and Amos Otis and Tom Poquette belted two-run homers in the first inning as the Royals won, 6-1. George Hendrick's 20th homer, in the second inning, spoiled Pattin's bid for a shutout in his first complete game this season.

Brewers 4, A's 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Von Joshua delivered a single off Rollie Fingers with the bases full in the last of the ninth inning, scoring the tying and winning runs as the Brewers snapped the Athletics' nine-game winning streak, 4-3.

Orioles 8, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
The Orioles thumped the Twins, 8-4, for their fourth victory in five games. Mark Belanger doubled, driving in two runs in the second inning, and Ken Singleton socked a three-run homer in the fifth.

Yankees 5, Rangers 1 at New York (night game):
Mickey Rivers and Fred Stanley hit home runs to support Catfish Hunter's seven-hit pitching while leading the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Rangers. Stanley's homer was his first since 1973.

Braves 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Braves defeated the Reds, 4-3, and ended Fred Norman's five-game winning streak. A leadoff homer by Vic Correll in the seventh inning was the deciding blow as Carl Morton and Adrian Devine teamed up on a five-hitter that extended the Reds' losing streak to three games.

Cubs 5, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Rob Sperring singled with the bases full in the ninth inning, scoring two runs and enabling the Cubs to down the Astros, 5-3. Singles by Pete LaCock and Manny Trillo, a throwing error by Rob Andrews and intentional walk to Steve Swisher made a loser of Larry Dierker, who allowed one hit in the first five innings. Andrews' miscue came after Dierker apparently had picked LaCock off second base. Andrews' throw to third struck the runner in the back.

Padres 11, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
The Padres exploded for eight runs in the ninth inning to overcome the Cardinals, 11-7, despite Lou Brock's five singles and two stolen bases. A two-run double by Willie Davis and two-run triple by Enzo Hernandez were the key blows in the game-winning rally.
