Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 4, Red Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Homers by Jim Spencer and Bucky Dent carried the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox. A triple by Rick Burleson and sacrifice fly by Denny Doyle produced a run for the Red Sox in the first inning and their other tally followed in the second when Butch Hobson bounced into a double play with the bases loaded. Spencer got one run back with his homer in the White Sox' half of the second. Dent then decided the outcome, hitting for the circuit in the fifth to score behind Jerry Hairston, who had reached base with a single.
Angels 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Nolan Ryan struck out 17 batters for a season high in the major leagues and gained the victory when the Angels defeated the Tigers, 5-4, in 11 innings with the winning run scoring on a wild pitch by John Hiller. Ryan had a 3-1 lead going into the ninth inning but blew his advantage when pinch-hitter Dan Meyer hit a two-run homer to tie the score. The Angels went ahead again with a run in the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Davis with the bases loaded, only to have the Tigers pull even in their half when Rusty Staub doubled to drive in Alex Johnson. However in the 11th, Dave Collins singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball after Jerry Remy walked. One out later, Hiller snapped off a curve that hit in front of the plate and bounced over the head of catcher Bruce Kimm, allowing Collins to score the deciding run. John Verhoeven relieved Ryan and retired the Tigers in their half of the 11th, although issuing two walks.
Indians 4, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
With two out in the seventh inning, the Indians erupted for four runs to defeat the Royals, 4-1. Rico Carty doubled to open the rally and, after an intentional pass to Boog Powell, Larvell Blanks singled to score Carty. Buddy Bell followed with a single, driving in Powell. Blanks and Bell took an extra base on the throw home, leading to an intentional pass to Tommy Smith. Ray Fosse capitalized on the opportunity with a single, adding the Indians' clinching pair.
Brewers 3, A's 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Slaton yielded only four hits in 8 2/3 innings before giving way to Ray Sadecki, who retired the last batter to save the Brewers' 3-1 victory over the Athletics. The Brewers scored a run in the second inning on a single by Darrell Porter and double by Gorman Thomas before adding a pair in the eighth when Jack Heidemann singled with the bases loaded. The A's collected two of their four hits with two out in the ninth, scoring on singles by Bert Campaneris and Don Baylor around two wild pitches. Sadecki retired Billy Williams for the final out.
Twins 5, Orioles 1 at Minnesota (night game):
The Orioles were stopped on their five-game winning streak with a 5-1 loss to the Twins. Dave Goltz held the Orioles to three hits before giving up a run on three singles in the eighth inning. Bill Campbell relieved and struck out Lee May to end the Orioles' threat. The Twins beat Jim Palmer, starting their scoring in the fourth when Rod Carew knocked in a run with a single and later crossed the plate himself on a wild throw by Mark Belanger. Mike Cubbage batted in a run with a double in the seventh and scored on a single by Bob Randall. Tippy Martinez yielded the Twins' final tally in the eighth after replacing Palmer.
Yankees 8, Rangers 6 at New York (night game):
Switch-hitting Roy White walloped two homers, one from each side of the plate, and also doubled to drive in five runs and lead the Yankees to an 8-6 victory over the Rangers. Ken Holtzman, who started on the mound for the Yankees, was kayoed in the second inning after giving up five runs. The Yankees came back with White's first homer of the game in the third and then bounced ahead with five runs in the fifth, two scoring on White's double. Jim Sundberg homered for the Rangers in the eighth, but Fred Stanley singled in the ninth and White followed with his second round-tripper to win the game for the Yankees.
Reds 4, Braves 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Jack Billingham posted his fourth straight victory and ended the Reds' four-game losing streak by defeating the Braves, 4-1. Singles by Pete Rose and Johnny Bench around a walk to Joe Morgan started the Reds' scoring in the first inning. Walks to Morgan and Bench and singles by Tony Perez and Cesar Geronimo added two runs in the third. Rose singled in the seventh, Morgan walked and the pair then worked a double steal, setting up the Reds' final run on a balk by Dick Ruthven. The stolen base was Morgan's 40th, giving him at least that many for eight straight seasons.
Dodgers 3, Mets 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Tom Seaver's record dropped to 9-9 when the Dodgers scored on a pinch-double by Manny Mota with two out in the ninth inning to defeat the Mets, 3-2. Ron Cey opened the ninth with a single but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit. After Leron Lee struck out, Bill Russell singled and stole second, setting the stage for Mota's double as the pinch-hitter for winning reliever Charlie Hough.
Phillies 5, Expos 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
With a triple by Mike Schmidt as the biggest blow, the Phillles scored five runs in the third inning and defeated the Expos, 5-4. After the Expos scored twice in the top half of the inning, Jim Lonborg drew a walk to start the Phillies' outburst, Dave Cash doubled and Schmidt tripled both runners home. Following a pass to Greg Luzinski, Jay Johnstone doubled to make it 3-2. An intentional pass to Garry Maddox loaded the bases and brought up Tommy Hutton, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Luzinski. Another pass to Johnny Oates reloaded the sacks and Lonborg, batting for the second time in the stanza, singled to drive in what proved to be the winning run.
Pirates 12, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Battered by the Pirates, 12-1, the Giants probably were glad to see rain stop the game after 6½ innings. Jim Rooker held the Giants to four hits and joined in the Pirates' attack with a two-run triple. Richie Zisk batted in four runs with a single, double and infield out. Dave Parker, who went 4-for-4, and Manny Sanguillen had two RBIs apiece.
Cardinals 5, Padres 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Mike Anderson and Ted Simmons drove in two runs apiece as the Cardinals turned back Randy Jones' bid for his 20th victory by defeating the Padres, 5-4. The Cards' triumph was their third over the ace southpaw this season. The Cards jumped on Jones for three runs in the first inning, with Simmons accounting for one with a single and Anderson for another with a double. After the Padres counted a pair in the second, the Cardinals picked up a run in the third on a pass to Lou Brock, a stolen base and double by Simmons. Then in the seventh, Simmons hit his second double of the game and scored what proved to be the winning run on a two-out single by Anderson.
