Red Sox 5, A's 2 at Boston (day game):
Cecil Cooper hit a homer and single, accounting for two runs, and Carl Yastrzemski also batted in two with a pair of doubles to lead the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Athletics. Reggie Cleveland, who started for the Red Sox, gave up a homer by Don Baylor in the first inning but the checked the A's until the ninth when a single by Billy Williams and single by Sal Bando forced his exit. Tom Murphy, relieving with two out, gave up a run-scoring double by Gene Tenace before retiring Ken McMullen on a fly to left field to end the game.

White Sox 11, Orioles 10 at Chicago (day game):
Winding up a high-scoring contest, the White Sox counted on a single by Bill Stein in the 12th inning and defeated the Orioles, 11-10. The Orioles were beaten although piling up 22 hits against 15 for the White Sox. The Orioles also had an advantage in extra-base blows with a homer, triple and double by Al Bumbry, homer by Doug DeCinces and doubles by Reggie Jackson, Ken Singleton and Paul Blair. Jack Brohamer hit a homer for the White Sox, who also had doubles by Alan Bannister, Jim Essian and Pat Kelly. In the 12th, Essian beat out a bunt and moved to second on a sacrifice by Kevin Bell. Jorge Orta popped up, but Stein hit a grounder that struck third base and bounced away for a single, driving in Essian with the winning run.

Twins 7, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
Blowing up in the 10th inning, Mark Fidrych loaded the bases, hit Dan Ford with a pitch and then gave up three more runs to go down to defeat as the Twins triumphed over the Tigers, 7-3. The Tigers counted their runs in the first, two scoring on a double by Rusty Staub, but the Twins came back with a two-run homer by Steve Brye in the second before tying the score in the seventh on singles by Lyman Bostock and Brye around a sacrifice and a grounder by Larry Hisle. In the 10th, with one out, Bob Randall and Steve Braun singled for the Twins. Roy Smalley also singled, but Randall was thrown out at the plate by Ron LeFlore. Fidrych then walked Rod Carew intentionally to load the bases before hitting Ford with a pitch to force in the tie-breaking tally. Upset, the Tigers' rookie righthander gave up a two-run single by Butch Wynegar and run-scoring double by Bostock before the inning ended.

Royals 6, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Although forced to call on three pitchers, the Royals defeated the Brewers, 6-2, with a 14-hit attack that included three each by Ruppert Jones and Amos Otis and two apiece by George Brett and Hal McRae. The Royals jumped off to a two-run lead in the first inning on singles by Jones, Otis and Brett and an infield out by John Mayberry. After the Brewers came back with a tally on a triple by Mike Hegan and grounder by Sixto Lezcano, the Royals put the game away with three runs in the fourth. Singles by Frank White and Otis and an infield out by Brett produced the first counter. Mayberry walked. Otis stole third and scored on a single by McRae. Pinch-hitter Al Cowens followed with a single to drive in Mayberry. Von Joshua homered for the Brewers in the sixth before the Royals picked up their last run in the ninth on an RBI single by Fred Patek.

Angels 4, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
Leading off in the 10th inning, Rusty Torres smashed a homer to bring the Angels a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. The Angels took an early 3-0 lead, counting a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Tony Solaita and adding two in the second on a single by Dave Chalk and wild pitch by Dock Ellis. The Yankees tied the score in the fourth when Chris Chambliss and Carlos May singled and Oscar Gamble homered.

Rangers 5, Indians 3 at Texas (night game):
Gaylord Perry pitched a seven-hitter and gained his 12th victory when the Rangers defeated the Indians, 5-3. A defensive lapse enabled the Indians to score two runs on an infield out in the first inning. After Rick Manning singled, John Lowenstein walked and Rico Carty singled to load the bases, Larvell Blanks grounded to second baseman Danny Thompson, who failed in his attempt to tag Carty. Thompson then was forced to throw to first to retire Blanks while both Manning and Lowenstein scored on the play. The Rangers came back with two runs in their half and broke the tie with a run in the fifth before putting over the winning margin in the sixth when Jim Fregosi singled, Tom Grieve tripled and Juan Beniquez doubled. Boog Powell homered for the Indians in the seventh.

Cubs 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Errors by Dave Concepcion and George Foster enabled the Cubs to score a pair of unearned runs to defeat the Reds, 3-2. The Cubs counted their initial marker in the first inning. Rick Monday singled and Manny Trillo walked with one out. George Mitterwald grounded to Joe Morgan, but Concepcion dropped the throw at second, allowing Monday to score. In the third, Trillo walked, stole second and scored on a double by Mitterwald. Rob Sperring singled in the fourth and when Foster dropped a fly ball by Rick Reusehel for a two-base error, Sperring raced home with what proved to be the Cubs' winning run. Morgan hit a homer for the Reds.

Dodgers 5, Pirates 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Don Sutton pitched a perfect game for 7 1/3 innings before giving up a homer by Dave Parker, but the Dodgers' righthander had no trouble beating the Pirates, 5-1, for his 15th victory. Manny Sanguillen later doubled for the Pirates' second and final hit. The Dodgers opened the scoring in the third with two runs on a walk to Ellie Rodriguez, triple by Davey Lopes and single by Bill Buckner. Three singles added a run in the fourth before Steve Garvey hit a homer with Buckner on base in the fifth.

Phillies 7, Astros 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Led by Jay Johnstone and Garry Maddox, each with three hits and two runs batted in, the Phillies defeated the Astros, 7-4. Cliff Johnson started the Astros' scoring with a homer in the second inning, but Johnstone knocked in the tying tally with a double in the fourth. The Astros broke ahead again with a three-run outburst in the fifth that included doubles by Jerry DaVanon and Roger Metzger, but their lead was short-lived. The Phillies erupted for four runs in the home half of the inning after loading the bases with singles by Tommy Hutton, Dave Cash and Larry Bowa. Greg Luzinski walked to force in one run, another scored on an infield out by Johnstone and two followed on a single by Maddox and a wild throw from the outfield by Wilbur Howard.

Mets 7, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Jerry Koosman was a winner for the sixth straight time and the 10th time in his last 11 decisions when the Mets' southpaw defeated the Padres, 7-1. The Mets took a 2-0 lead before Tito Fuentes homered for the Padres' run in the sixth inning. The Mets then locked up Koosman's decision with four runs in the seventh. Bruce Boisclair doubled for the first tally. John Milner and Joe Torre followed with run-scoring singles and Mike Vail capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Giants 5, Expos 4 at San Francisco (day game):
The N. L.'s two last-place clubs battled through 16 innings before the Giants defeated the Expos, 5-4. Jose Morales hit a three-run double in the eighth inning when the Expos scored four times to take a 4-2 lead, but the Giants rallied to tie the game in the ninth with a homer by Bobby Murcer and run-scoring single by Dave Rader. The game then wended its way to a conclusion in the 16th after four hours and 16 minutes of play. Ken Reitz opened the inning with a single and was forced by Gary Matthews. Murcer grounded out, sending Matthews to second, and Larry Herndon followed with the winning single.

Braves 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Carl Morton stroked three singles and drove in three runs to help himself to victory as the Braves defeated the Cardinals, 6-2. Pitching with a badly bruised left leg, Morton allowed 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings before yielding the mound to Adrian Devine. Morton singled to produce one of the Braves' two runs in the second inning. With the score tied, 2-2, the Braves broke away with three runs in the sixth on consecutive singles by Ken Henderson, Rod Gilbreath and Darrel Chaney, an infield out by Vic Correll and single by Morton. The Braves' righthander added his third RBI with a single in the eighth.
