A's 7, Red Sox 6 at Boston (day game):
For the second time in his career, Bert Campaneris rapped five hits in one game to lead the Athletics to a 7-6 victory over the Red Sox in 11 innings. Campy knocked in two runs with a single in the sixth when the A's counted four times to take a 6-1 lead, but the Red Sox came back with a five-run rally in their half. Rick Miller accounted for two tallies with a double. In the 11th, Phil Garner singled, took second on a sacrifice by Jeff Newman and stopped at third on a two-out single by Campaneris. Don Baylor then laid down a surprise squeeze bunt, scoring Garner, who beat Jim Willoughby's throw to the plate.
[DH] Orioles 6, White Sox 2 (day game) / White Sox 7, Orioles 3 at Chicago (day game):
Pinch-hitting in ninth inning, Reggie Jackson came through with a grand-slam homer to power the Orioles to a 6-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the White Sox gained a split by winning the nightcap, 7-3. Jim Palmer, pitching the lidlifter for the Orioles, was staked to a 2-0 lead and allowed only one hit until the eighth when the White Sox tied the score on a single by Jorge Orta after a walk, hit batsman and infield single by Jim Essian had loaded the bases. Ken Singleton drew a walk to open the Orioles' ninth and, with one out, Dave Duncan singled. After a wild pitch, Brooks Robinson walked. Jackson was announced as the pinch-hitter for Tommy Harper and Terry Forster took the mound in relief for the White Sox, but Jackson upset the percentage by smashing his homer. In the nightcap, Lamar Johnson rapped three singles, drove in two runs and scored twice for the White Sox, while Jerry Hairston also accounted for two RBIs, walking with the bases loaded to force in one run and hitting a single for another.
Twins 6, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
Doubles by Butch Wynegar and Lyman Bostock and a single by Mike Cubbage produced two runs in the 12th inning and brought the Twins a 6-4 victory over the Tigers. The Twins took a 4-3 lead with a homer by Cubbage in the eighth, but the Tigers tied the score in their half with a run on a double by Rusty Staub, an infield hit by Bill Freehan and sacrifice fly by Alex Johnson. Bill Campbell, pitching in relief for the fifth straight day, was the Twins' winner, raising his record to 13-3 to go along with 18 saves.
Royals 7, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (day game):
After getting a spark from a two-run double by John Mayberry in the eighth inning, the Royals scored four runs in the ninth and defeated the Brewers, 7-4. Von Joshua rapped three hits, including a homer, for the Brewers, who took a 4-1 lead before John Mayberry narrowed the Royals' deficit with his double. In the ninth, Brewers' reliever Danny Frisella lost his control and walked Jamie Quirk, Bob Stinson and Frank White to load the bases. Ruppert Jones followed with an infield hit, driving in one run. Amos Otis singled, adding two tallies, and the final run followed on an error by Robin Yount. George Brett had another three-hit game for the Royals.
Angels 11, Yankees 8 at New York (day game):
The Angels blew an 8-0 lead in the ninth inning but came back to defeat the Yankees, 11-8, with three runs in the 11th. Dave Collins and Tony Solaita hit homers for the Angels to help build up their big lead while Frank Tanana allowed only two hits before falling apart in the ninth. Graig Nettles and Fran Healy hit run-scoring singles in the Yankees' rally and Willie Randolph batted in a pair with a double to chase Tanana. After John Verhoeven relieved, Carlos May hit a two-run single and Roy White followed with a homer to tie the score. However in the 11th, Jerry Remy singled and when Sparky Lyle threw late to second on a bunt by mario Guerrero, both runners were safe. Tommy Davis, batting for Dan Briggs, singled to score Remy. When White's throw from the outfield hit Remy and bounced away, Lyle retrieved the ball and threw wildly past the plate, allowing Guerrero to come home with the second run. Rusty Torres, running for Davis, counted the final tally on a sacrifice fly by Leroy Stanton.
Indians 3, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Pitching eight innings, Pat Dobson ended a personal four-game losing streak and gained his first victory since July 16 when the Indians defeated the Rangers, 3-1. Dave LaRoche hurled the final frame. The Indians nicked Tommy Boggs for a run in the fourth inning on singles by Rick Manning, George Hendrick and Buddy Bell. Frank Duffy doubled in the fifth, took third on a sacrifice and counted on an infield out by Tommy Smith. The Rangers picked up their run in the home half on an RBI single by Juan Beniquez, but the Indians clinched the verdict with a run on a sacrifice fly by Duane Kuiper in the ninth.
Reds 4, Cubs 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
With a crowd of 40,018 on hand, the Reds went over 2,000,000 in attendance for the fourth straight year and marked the occasion by defeating the Cubs, 4-3. The Reds, who were held to only four hits, tied the score at 3-3 in the third inning when Joe Morgan homered with a man on base. With two out in the seventh, Mike Lum batted for Manny Sarmiento and reached base on an error by Pete LaCock. Pinch-runner Ed Armbrister stole second and scored the winning run on a single by Rose.
Pirates 6, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
A homer by Willie Stargell after a single by Richie Zisk in the first inning started the Pirates off to a 6-1 victory over the Dodgers, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. The loss was only the second for Rick Rhoden against 11 wins. The Dodgers counted their run in the third when Ellie Rodriguez singled and was forced by Davey Lopes, who stole second and scored on a single by Bill Buckner. The Pirates pulled away again with two runs in the fourth. Stargell and Dave Parker walked, but Stargell was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single by Richie Hebner. Parker, taking third on the play, counted on a wild pitch. Mario Mendoza followed with a single to drive in Hebner.
Phillies 5, Astros 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Allowing only five hits, Tom Underwood pitched the Phillies to a 5-1 victory over the Astros. The Phils put the game away with three runs in the second inning. Jay Johnstone tripled and scored on a wild pitch by Larry Dierker. Bob Boone doubled, stopped at third on a single by Bobby Tolan and sauntered home on a double by Terry Harmon. When Leon Roberts let the ball get away in left field, Tolan also scored. Jose Cruz homered in the fourth inning for the Astros' run.
Mets 1, Padres 0 at San Diego (day game):
An unearned run decided a duel between Jon Matlack and Randy Jones and enabled the Mets to defeat the Padres, 1-0. Jones, who was turned back in a bid for his 20th victory, suffered his fifth loss in six starts. In the seventh inning, Joe Torre grounded to Padre third baseman Ted Kubiak, who made a bad throw to first for an error. Pepe Mangual came in to run for Torre and advanced to second on a balk by Jones. jerry Grote then doubled to drive in the only run.
Giants 4, Expos 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Gary Matthews, who hit a two-run homer in the first inning, singled in the ninth and drove in Larry Herndon to bring the Giants a 4-3 victory over the Expos. The Giants held a 3-1 lead until Larry Parrish homered for the Expos with a man on base to tie the score in the eighth. Herndon beat out a bunt with one away in the ninth, moved up on an infield out by Marty Perez and crossed the plate with the winning run on Matthews' single.
Cardinals 8, Braves 0 at St. Louis (day game):
Lynn McGlothen not only pitched a five-hitter but drove in three runs with a double as the Cardinals shut out the Braves, 8-0. Keith Hernandez accounted for three runs with a homer in the fourth inning. The Cards added a pair in the seventh before McGlothen iced his victory with a bases-loaded double in the eighth.
