Today's scores and summaries:

A's 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Joe Rudi batted in three of the Athletics' first four runs before Gene Tenace homered in the eighth inning to defeat the Orioles, 5-4. Rudi accounted for his RBIs with singles in the first and third innings and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. In between, the A's also scored on a wild pitch by Wayne Garland in the third. Doug DeCinces and Lee May hit homers for the Orioles. After May's blow with a man on base tied the score in the seventh, Tenace broke the deadlock with his homer on the first pitch thrown to him by Garland in the eighth.

Angels 6, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Terry Humphrey, the Angels' leading batter with an average of .311, rapped a run-scoring double with two out in the ninth inning to defeat the Red Sox, 6-5. Carlton Fisk hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox, while Tony Solaita supplied three runs for the Angels with a circuit clout. In the ninth, Dave Collins led off with a single for his third hit of the game and was forced by Rusty Torres. After Dan Briggs struck out and Torres stole second, Solaita was passed intentionally in a move that failed when Humphrey delivered his decisive double.

Indians 2, Royals 1 at Cleveland (night game):
After giving up three singles in the first four innings, Rick Waits did not yield a hit the rest of the way while pitching the Indians to a 2-1 victory over the Royals. Hal McRae drove in the Royals' run with a single in the first, but the Indians knotted the count in their half with a single by Duane Kuiper, two walks and a sacrifice fly by Boog Powell. The deciding run followed in the fourth on a pass to Powell, single by George Hendrick, Buddy Bell's forceout of Powell and a single by Ray Fosse.

White Sox 12, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers' youthful infield combination of shortstop Mark Wagner and second baseman Jerry Manuel committed two errors each in the ninth inning, enabling the White Sox to score seven unearned runs and gain a 12-7 victory. Manuel started the stanza by booting a grounder by Pat Kelly. After an infield out, Brian Downing singled, scoring Kelly. Wagner then bobbled a grounder by Chet Lemon and threw wildly for two errors, Downing taking third and Lemon second. An intentional pass to Ralph Garr loaded the bases and another pass to Jack Brohamer forced in Downing. Jerry Hairston followed with a sacrifice fly. Manuel mishandled a grounder by Jorge Orta for his second error to permit another run. The White Sox added three more tallies on singles by Bill Stein, Kelly and Jim Spencer before the inning ended. Bill Freehan hit his fifth homer of the season for the Tigers and 200th of his major league career, connecting with two men on base in the second inning.

Yankees 5, Twins 4 at New York (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Willie Randolph and triple by Mickey Rivers highlighted a seventh-inning rally that carried the Yankees to a 5-4 victory over the Twins. With the score tied, 1-1, the Yankees loaded the bases with a double by Chris Chambliss, single by Graig Nettles and pass to Otto Velez. Randolph cleared the sacks with his double and scored what proved to be the winning run on Rivers' triple. The Twins picked up a tally in the eighth and then fell one run short when Dan Ford singled and pinch-hitter Tony Oliva smashed his first homer of the year in the ninth.

Brewers 1, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Tim Johnson singled in the 10th inning for his third hit of the game and drove in a run to enable Jerry Augustine to pitch the Brewers to a 1-0 victory over the Rangers. The shutout was the third of the year for Augustine, who allowed five hits. Nelson Briles started for the Rangers and pitched eight innings before blisters on finger forced his departure in favor of Steve Foucault. Darrell Porter singled off the reliever in the 10th and, after a sacrifice by Gorman Thomas, Johnson drove in the winning run.

Phillies 14, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Bobby Tolan batted in five runs with a homer and two singles, while Steve Carlton also had a productive night at bat, accounting for three runs with a double and two singles, as the Phillies trounced the Braves, 14-3. Carlton pitched eight innings before turning the mound over to Gene Garber and allowed seven hits, including two homers by Jim Wynn.

Astros 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Bo McLaughlin gained credit for his first major league save, cutting off a Cubs' rally in the ninth inning, to enable the Astros to emerge with a 4-3 victory. Bob Watson singled and doubled for the Astros, driving in one run and scoring another. Joaquin Andujar, who started for the Astros, allowed only four hits and one run before being removed for a pinch-batter in the eighth inning. The Cubs mounted a threat in the ninth when Mick Kelleher and Rick Monday singled, knocking out Joe Sambito and bringing in Gene Pentz. Jose Cardenal singled to load the bases and Bill Madlock was hit by a pitch, forcing in Kelleher. McLaughlin then arrived on the scene and retired Pete LaCock on a foul, got Manny Trillo on a grounder as a run scored and struck out Joe Wallis to end the game.

Cardinals 4, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pete Falcone extended his August winning streak to five games by pitching the Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over the Reds. The lefthander gave up the Reds' run in the first inning on walks to Pete Rose and Joe Morgan, a double steal and infield out by George Foster. The Cards went ahead to stay with two runs in the fourth on a homer by Willie Crawford, single by Keith Hernandez and triple by Don Kessinger.

Dodgers 6, Expos 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Expos were shut out on seven hits by Burt Hooton and absorbed their 10th straight defeat, losing to the Dodgers, 6-0. Steve Yeager, Hooton's receiver, committed three errors, one less than the modern major league record for a catcher, but the Expos were unable to capitalize on them. The Dodgers collected only five hits. Davey Lopes walked in the first inning, stole second, moved to third on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bill Russell. Ron Cey homered in the second. The Dodgers wrapped up their scoring with four runs in the third, two counting on a single by Dusty Baker.

Padres 7, Pirates 3 at San Diego (night game):
Mike Ivie drove in four runs with a pair of singles to lead the Padres to a 7-3 victory over the Pirates. Richie Zisk homered with a mate aboard for the Pirates in the first inning, but the Padres came back with three runs in their half on singles by Tito Fuentes, Willie Davis, Dave Winfield and Ivie. The Padres added two runs in the second and completed their scoring when Ivie singled with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Mets 4, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Tom Seaver, who had not been a winner since July 8, turned in his third shutout of the season and pitched the Mets to a 4-0 victory over the Giants. During his drouth, Seaver lost four times and had no-decisions in three other games, covering a stretch in which the Mets backed their star righthander with a total of only 12 runs. Roy Staiger drove in two tallies against the Giants with a single and sacrifice fly, while the other runs scored on errors by Bobby Murcer and Chris Speier.
