Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Royals 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Bobby Grich doubled in the sixth inning to score Tommy Harper with the tying run, advanced to third on an infield out, then tallied the winning run on Lee May's sacrifice fly as the Orioles stopped the Royals, 3-2.

Red Sox 11, Rangers 3 at Boston (night game):
Jim Rice belted home runs Nos. 17 and 18 and also doubled, driving in five runs, in the Red Sox' 11-3 rout of the Rangers. Luis Tiant was nicked for 11 hits, but posted his 16th victory. Rick Burleson escaped with a slight concussion when he was struck near the left ear by a Bert Blyleven pitch in the second inning.

Angels 2, Tigers 1 at California (night game):
Dave Collins beat out an infield hit to start the eighth inning, was sacrificed to second base by Jerry Remy, took third on a groundout, then stole home to enable the Angels to edge the Tigers, 2-1.

Twins 10, Brewers 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins, with Tom Burgmeier working 8 2/3 strong innings in relief of starter Pete Redfern, came from behind to beat the Brewers, 10-3, and end their six-game losing streak. Rod Carew stole home for the 15th time in his career in the first inning, then delivered a two-run double in the second to send the Twins in front. Dan Ford also accounted for two RBIs.

Yankees 5, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
With outfielders Mickey Rivers and Roy White providing sterling defense, Ed Figueroa gave up only six hits in pitching the Yankees to a 5-2 victory over the Athletics and logging his 16th victory.

Astros 3, Phillies 1 at Houston (night game):
The Astros extended the Phillies' losing streak to four games by scoring a 3-1 victory behind the five-hit pitching of Dan Larson. A two-run double by Cesar Cedeno in the eighth inning, scoring Larson who doubled and Enos Cabell who reached base on Mike Schmidt's throwing error, was the big blow in the Astros' fifth straight triumph.

Cardinals 7, Reds 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals tapped relievers Will McEnaney and Manny Sarmiento for eight hits and six runs in the last four innings to trim the Reds, 7-1. Lou Brock and Ted Simmons each had two hits and drove in two runs to support John Denny, who limited the Reds to six hits over the last eight rounds. Don Gullett, in the first test of his tender shoulder since July 30, was lifted after five impressive innings.
