Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, Royals 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A loser of his first four decisions, Mike Flanagan pitched a six-hitter and gained his first major league victory when the Orioles defeated the Royals, 7-1. Dave Nelson walked in the fifth inning, stole two bases and scored the Royals' run on a sacrifice fly by Jim Wohlford. The Orioles came back with a five-run outburst in their half of the fifth. Reggie Jackson drove in two tallies with a bases-loaded single and Lee May followed with a three-run homer. May added his fourth RBI of the game with a double in the eighth.

Red Sox 3, Rangers 0 at Boston (day game):
The Red Sox lost Fergie Jenkins for the remainder of the season when the veteran righthander tore his Achilles tendon on a play at first base in the fifth inning of a 3-0 victory over the Rangers. Relieving Jenkins with one out, Tom Murphy passed Juan Beniquez but then retired the last 14 batters in a row, needing only 39 pitches, to gain credit for the victory. The Red Sox scored initially in the first inning on a triple by Denny Doyle and sacrifice fly by Fred Lynn. Their other runs followed in the fourth when Lynn doubled, Carl Yastrzemski tripled and Jim Rice doubled.

Angels 4, Tigers 1 at California (night game):
Frank Tanana turned in his 20th complete game of the season and was a winner for the 15th time, pitching the Angels to a 4-1 victory over the Tigers. The Angels scored all their runs in the third inning. Mario Guerrero singled, Andy Etchebarren doubled and Dave Collins drove them both home with another double. Singles by Jerry Remy and Tommy Davis sent Collins across the plate. After a walk to Bill Melton, Tony Solaita hit a sacrifice fly. The Tigers averted a shutout in the ninth when Willie Horton singled to score Mickey Stanley.

Indians 3, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
With Jim Bibby pitching a five-hitter, the Indians defeated the White Sox, 3-0, for their fifth victory in a row and eighth in the last nine games. Ray Fosse staked Bibby to the only run that he needed with a homer in the fourth inning. The Indians iced the verdict in the ninth with a walk to George Hendrick, double by Buddy Bell and single by Frank Duffy.

Twins 3, Brewers 2 at Minnesota (night game):
An unearned run in the 12th inning enabled the Twins to defeat the Brewers, 3-2. Rod Carew led off with a single. Lyman Bostock followed with a bunt and when catcher Darrell Porter threw the ball over the head of first baseman George Scott, Carew came around to score the winning run. Scott homered for the Brewers, who lost a 2-0 lead in the ninth when the Twins tied the score with a single by Mike Cubbage, double by Dan Ford and single by Roy Smalley.

A's 5, Yankees 0 at Oakland (night game):
Vida Blue shut out the Yankees on seven singles and pitched the Athletics to a 5-0 victory. The complete game was Blue's seventh straight, while the shutout was his sixth of the season. The A's nicked Catfish Hunter for a run in the first inning on a single by Bert Campaneris, his first of three stolen bases, and a single by Joe Rudi. Doubles by Jeff Newman and Don Baylor added a tally in the second. Gene Tenace homered in the third. Phil Garner accounted for the last two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth.

Cubs 7, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Jerry Morales batted in four runs, including the decisive pair in the 14th inning, as the Cubs defeated the Braves, 7-5. The Braves forced the game into overtime when Ken Henderson hit a two-run homer in the ninth to tie the score at 4-4. Buzz Capra, making his first appearance of the season with the Braves, relieved in the 14th and issued three passes to load the bases with one out. The Braves missed an attempted forceout on a grounder by Bill Madlock, one run scoring on the fielder's choice. Morales then hit his two-run single for what proved to be the Cubs' winning margin, offsetting the run that the Braves scored in their half of the 14th.

Astros 1, Phillies 0 at Houston (night game):
A homer by Cliff Johnson in the seventh inning and shutout pitching by Bo McLaughlin enabled the Astros to extend their winning streak to seven games with a 1-0 victory over the Phillies, who lost for the sixth time in a row. McLaughlin's complete game was the sixth straight to the credit of the Astros' staff, tying the club record.

Mets 1, Giants 0 at New York (night game):
jerry Koosman pitched a three-hitter and gained his 17th victory of the season with the Mets when Felix Millan and John Milner hit consecutive doubles for a run in the eighth inning to defeat the Giants, 1-0.

Pirates 4, Padres 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates took advantage of an error by Tito Fuentes in the fourth inning and scored four unearned runs to defeat the Padres, 4-1, for their sixth straight victory. With one out, Richie Zisk walked, stopped at second on a single by Bob Robertson and scored when Fuentes booted a grounder by Dave Parker. After Bill Robinson was retired, Richie Hebner batted in a run with a double. Following a pass to Duffy Dyer, Bruce Kison clinched his own victory, driving in two runs with a single.

Cardinals 1, Reds 0 at St. Louis (night game):
A walk to Don Kessinger with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th inning handed the Cardinals a 1-0 victory over the Reds. Starting pitchers Fred Norman for the Reds and Eric Rasmussen for the Cardinals dueled through 10 scoreless stanzas. Al Hrabosky was the Cards' winner in relief, while Rawly Eastwick drew the defeat. In the 11th, Keith Hernandez led off with a double. After an intentional pass to Ted Simmons, Charlie Chant beat out a bunt for his first major league hit, loading the bases. The next two batters, Willie Crawford and Ron Fairly, hit short flies to Cesar Geronimo, Hernandez holding third, but Eastwick then walked Kessinger on four straight pitches to force in the only run of the game.
