Today's scores and summaries:
A's 2, Angels 1 at California (day game):
The Athletics edged the Angels, 2-1, when Phil Garner singled with one out in the 11th, scoring Claudell Washington from second base with the winning run. Washington had doubled as a pinch-hitter, setting the stage for Garner's third successive single. The A's stole seven bases, increasing their season total to 297 and erasing the old American League record of 291 set by the 1913 Senators.
Tigers 5, Orioles 4 at Detroit (night game):
A four-run rally in the last of the eighth inning enabled the Tigers to overcome the Orioles, 5-4. Capping the comeback was a bloop single by Ben Oglivie, scoring pinch-runner Bruce Kimm from second base with the winning run.
Rangers 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Rangers sent a record-setting Kansas City crowd home unhappy with a four-run uprising in the ninth inning that produced a 5-4 victory over the Royals. This was Rangers' 11th victory in 15 games against the Royals and Kaycee's seventh setback in eight games. The Rangers combined singles by Roy Howell, Joe Lahoud and Juan Beniquez and two-run double by Dave Moates to rout Doug Bird. Reliever Mark Littell then walked Gene Clines and yielded a single to Toby Harrah, scoring Moates with the deciding run. The crowd boosted the Royals' season attendance to 1,401,121, largest in 21 seasons of major league baseball in Kaycee.
[DH] Brewers 3, Indians 2 (day game) / Indians 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers defeated the Indians, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Tribe bounced back to take the nightcap by the same score. Rookie Dan Thomas doubled to score Darrell Porter, who had walked, with the deciding run in the ninth inning of the opener. With the score tied at 2-2 in the fifth inning of the nightcap, John Lowenstein doubled and scored all the way from second when Charlie Moore fielded Larvell Blanks' chopper and pulled Mike Hegan off the bag at first.
Twins 3, White Sox 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Craig Kusick's 10th home run of the season, with two out in the ninth inning, lifted the Twins past the White Sox, 3-2, and gave Bill Campbell his 15th victory, the major league high for relievers. Dan Ford belted his 15th homer in the second.
Yankees 6, Red Sox 5 at New York (night game):
A disputed three-run homer by Graig Nettles in the eighth inning powered the Yankees past the Red Sox, 6-5. Nettles 25th homer, which struck the wall behind the right-center field fence, bounced back onto the field and was first ruled in play, but first base umpire Joe Brinkman finally ruled the ball had cleared the fence.
Mets 7, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Dave Kingman drove in three runs with his major league-leading 34th homer and a double to power the Mets to a 7-4 triumph over the Cubs as Jerry Koosman notched his 18th victory. Kingman's homer was a two-run blow in the first inning. Rick Monday hit his 28th homer for the Cubs leading off the first, and added a two-run single in the sixth.
Reds 9, Astros 8 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds exploded for eight runs in the third inning, but it took a run-scoring double by Dave Concepcion in the sixth to produce a 9-8 victory over the Astros. Highlighting the eight-run outburst against J.R. Richard was a grand-slam homer by Joe Morgan, his 27th round-tripper and second slam of the season.
[DH] Cardinals 3, Expos 1 (night game) / Expos 3, Cardinals 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos and Cardinals split a doubleheader, the Expos winning the second game, 3-2, on a pinch-single by Earl Williams, after Pete Falcone pitched the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory in the opener. Williams' single scored Mike Jorgensen, who opened the ninth inning with a walk and moved up on Bombo Rivera's sacrifice. The Cardinals scored three runs in the seventh to back a four-hit effort by Falcone, who had eight strikeouts. Garry Templeton, Lou Brock and Luis Alvarado singled and Willie Crawford delivered a sacrifice fly in a three-run seventh when the Cardinals bunched three of their five hits off Steve Rogers.
[DH] Pirates 6, Phillies 2 (day game) / Pirates 5, Phillies 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The onrushing Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Phillies, 6-2, 5-1, and drew to 5½ games behind the National League East leaders who had a 15 game advantage on August 24. Bruce Kison limited the stumbling Phillies to five hits over the first eight innings and contributed a single and triple to the 12-hit attack in the opener. Bill Robinson hit a two-run triple in the third and Richie Hebner belted a solo homer in the fifth to support Larry Demery's four-hit pitching in the afterpiece.
Dodgers 4, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Don Sutton, seeking to become a 20-game winner for the first time in his career, outdueled Randy Jones as the Dodgers defeated the Padres, 4-1. Steve Garvey had a double, triple and his 11th homer, driving in two runs. Sutton, headed for his sixth victory in succession and 18th of the season, blanked the Padres on three hits until the ninth inning, when Merv Rettenmund unloaded his second pinch-homer of the season.
Giants 4, Braves 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Sixth-inning singles by Ken Reitz, Chris Speier and Gary Alexander produced the run that gave the Giants a 4-3 victory over the Braves. Jim Wynn hit 15th homer for the Braves in the eighth.
