Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
The Orioles collected 11 hits off Mark Fidrych and beat the Tigers, 5-3, but three of their runs off the colorful rookie were unearned. On the other hand, the Tigers scored their three runs on only one hit with the aid of two wild pitches by Wayne Garland, two walks, one hit batsman and a sacrifice fly. With the score tied, 3-3, the Orioles loaded the bases in the seventh inning on two singles and an error. Tony Muser hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the tie-breaking tally and Doug DeCinces followed with a single for an insurance run.

Angels 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The combination of three-hit pitching by Don Kirkwood and two RBIs by Tony Solalta carried the Angels to a 2-1 victory over the Royals, who went down to their eighth defeat in the last nine games. Solaita hit a sacrifice fly to plate the initial tally in the first inning. The Royals scored on a walk to Fred Patek, a stolen base and single by Tom Poquette in the third. The Angels registered the deciding run in the sixth when Mike Easler singled, stole second and came home on a single by Solaita.

Brewers 17, Indians 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers set a club record for most hits in a game with 20 and tied their club mark for most runs while trouncing the Indians, 17-4. In achieving their lopsided victory, the Brewers had two big innings, starting with six runs in the first and adding five in the fourth. George Scott accounted for four RBIs with a homer and single. Gary Beare, who came up from Spokane (Pacific Coast), was the winner in his first major league appearance.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 2 at New York (night game):
A two-run triple by Chris Chambliss and two-run homer by Oscar Gamble enabled the Yankees to break Luis Tiant's seven-game winning streak and defeat the Red Sox, 4-2. Dock Ellis, who started for the Yankees, pitched scoreless ball until Carlton Fisk homered in the seventh inning. The Red Sox then loaded the bases in the eighth, but Dick Tidrow retired the side without allowing a run and earned the save, although giving up a homer by Carl Yastrzemski in the ninth.

A's 4, White Sox 0 at Oakland (night game):
Mike Torrez pitched a four-hitter and Gene Tenace batted in three runs with two homers as the Athletics defeated the White Sox, 4-0. After Tenace homered in the second inning, the A's scored again in the fifth on a double by Bill North and two wild pitches by Clay Carroll. Tenace's second homer of the game came in the eighth with a man on base.

Twins 1, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Pete Redfern and Bill Campbell paired up to pitch the Twins to a 1-0 victory over the Rangers. Redfern worked six innings before giving way to Campbell, who picked up his 17th save. The game's only run scored off Gaylord Perry in the third inning on a double by Steve Brye, sacrifice by Bob Randall and grounder by Steve Braun. This was the third consecutive game that Perry had pitched without any scoring support from his teammates.

Mets 11, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
While Jon Matlack pitched his sixth shutout of the season, Leo Foster drove in five runs to lead the Mets' attack in an 11-0 rout of the Cubs. Foster plated a pair in the first with a single, drove home a third run with a single in the fifth and then capped his spree with a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Mike Phillips also homered.

Astros 10, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Astros exploded for eight runs in a seventh-inning outburst that included a pinch-triple by Ken Boswell with the bases loaded to defeat the Reds, 10-5. The Reds, who had homers by Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, went into the inning with a 5-2 lead. Fred Norman started the Astros on the way to their big rally by walking three batters to load the bases with one out. Enos Cabell and Cesar Cedeno followed with singles, each driving in one run. Bob Watson popped up, but Cliff Johnson doubled, knocking in two runs to send the Astros ahead, 6-5. After an intentional pass to Jose Cruz, Ken Boswell batted for Jerry DaVanon and hit his triple. A double by Roger Metzger drove in Boswell with the final marker.

Cardinals 7, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
A crowd of only 2,107, smallest turnout for a game in Montreal, saw the Expos lose to the Cardinals, 7-4. The Expos folded after taking a 4-0 lead. The Cards erupted to tie the score in the sixth, counting runs on singles by Keith Hernandez and hector Cruz and two more on a single by Ron Fairly. With two out in the seventh, the Cards broke the tie when Lou Brock doubled and Hernandez singled.

Padres 4, Dodgers 2 at San Diego (night game):
Dave Freisleben gained his first victory since August 16 when the Padres put together a pair of two-run outbursts to defeat the Dodgers, 4-2. In the fifth inning, Johnny Grubb drove in two runs with a single after the Padres had loaded the bases on a single by Jerry Turner and walks to Doug Rader and Freisleben. Then in the sixth, the other two runs crossed the plate when Willie Davis and Mike Ivie singled and Turner doubled. Steve Garvey batted in both Dodger runs with a single and homer.

Giants 6, Braves 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run attack on Phil Niekro in the fourth inning and defeated the Braves, 6-3. The Braves nicked Jim Barr for their pair in the second, but Marty Perez tied the score with a bases-loaded single in the Giants' half of the frame. In the fourth, Niekro helped beat himself with two walks and a wild pitch. Gary Matthews capped the uprising with a two-run double.
