Orioles 3, Indians 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Jim Palmer became the league's first 20-game winner of the season by pitching the Orioles to a 3-1 victory over the Indians. In entering the charmed circle for the sixth time in the last seven years, Palmer gave up the Indians' lone run on a triple by John Lowenstein and sacrifice fly by Larvell Blanks in the first inning. The Orioles tied the score in their half of the first and went ahead on a run-scoring single by Al Bumbry in the fifth. Reggie Jackson clinched the verdict with a homer in the sixth.

Red Sox 4, Tigers 3 at Boston (night game):
Carl Yastrzemski and Fred Lynn batted in two runs apiece to account for the Red Sox scoring in a 4-3 victory over the Tigers. Yastrzemski homered in the fourth inning. Lynn and Yastrzemski each drove in a run with singles in the fifth. Lynn then produced the deciding marker, hitting a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Angels 2, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Two run-scoring singles by Mike Easler, each driving in Jerry Remy, enabled the Angels to defeat the Royals, 2-0, behind the combined six-hit pitching of Gary Ross and Dick Drago. Ross was forced to leave the game in the third inning when hit on the right ankle a by line-drive single off the bat of George Brett. In the sixth, Brett had to be carried off the field on a stretcher after being hit above the right eye by Dave Chalk's knee while sliding into second base in an attempt to break up a double play. Remy singled in first inning, stole second and scored on Easler's first hit. Another single by Remy, an infield out and single by Easler added the other run in the fifth.

Yankees 8, Brewers 0 at New York (night game):
Posting his fourth shutout of the season, Ed Figueroa yielded only three singles and pitched the Yankees to an 8-0 victory over the Brewers. The Yankees' attack included homers by Graig Nettles and Otto Velez.

White Sox 6, A's 5 at Oakland (night game):
After failing behind, 5-0, in the first inning, the White Sox came back with a pair of three-run rallies to defeat the Athletics, 6-5. The A's sent 11 men to bat in the first. Joe Rudi knocked in two runs with a triple and scored himself on a double by Claudell Washington. The White Sox cut their deficit in half in the fifth when Bill Stein and Jim Spencer homered, Stein's blow coming with a man on base. Jorge Orta singled in the eighth and Lamar Johnson walked. After Alan Bannister forced Johnson, Jack Brohamer hit a sacrifice fly and Bucky Dent doubled to produce the tying pair. Sam Ewing then batted for Wayne Nordhagen and singled to drive in Dent with the winning run.

Twins 3, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Lyman Bostock rapped four hits, scoring two runs and driving in one, to lead the Twins to a 3-1 victory over the Rangers in a game stopped by rain in the top half of the eighth inning. Tom Grieve homered for the Rangers in the second. The Twins knotted the count with singles by Bostock and Butch Wynegar around a passed ball in the fourth. The tie-breaking tallies followed in the fifth on a single by Steve Braun, triple by Bostock and single by Larry Hisle.

Mets 11, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
Pinch-hitting in the ninth inning, Lee Mazzilli smashed a homer for his first major league hit as the Mets exploded for six runs to defeat the Cubs, 11-5. Mazzilli's clout came with two men on base in the young outfielder's second time at bat with the Mets since coming up from Jackson (Texas). The Mets, in escorting Tom Seaver to his victory, piled up 16 hits, including a homer and three singles by John Stearns, who drove in three runs.

Reds 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Gary Nolan gained his 12th victory and Rawly Eastwick earned his 20th save by combining to pitch the Reds to a 3-0 victory over the Astros. The Reds were held to one hit by Bo McLaughlin until Tony Perez homered in the fifth inning. Pete Rose was safe on an error by Roger Metzger in the sixth and scored on a double by Dan Driessen before Johnny Bench wrapped up the Reds' production with a homer in the ninth.

Giants 1, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bill Buckner's unwise attempt at a shoestring catch in the 11th inning set up the run that enabled the Giants to defeat the Dodgers, 1-0.Gary Thomasson rapped a sinking line drive to open the 11th and when Buckner failed to come up with the ball, Thomasson wound up at second with a double. Mike Sadek sacrificed. Darrell Evans then batted for Ed Halicki and hit a sacrifice fly to score the game's lone run.

Pirates 6, Phillies 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The onrushing Pirates, who were 15½ games behind on August 24, pulled within 4½ lengths of the Phillies by defeating the Eastern Division leaders, 6-1, to complete a sweep of the three-game series. The victory was the Pirates' 13th in their last 14 games, while the defeat was the Phillies' 11th in their last 12 outings. Richie Hebner led the Pirates' attack, driving in four runs with a single and double. The Pirates began their scoring with a pair in the second on a single by Bill Robinson, double by Manny Sanguillen and single by Hebner. Dave Parker doubled in the third and scored on a single by Robinson. After Sanguillen was hit by a pitch, Hebner added his two other RBIs with a double. The Phillies' lone run off Jim Rooker counted in the fourth on a double by Greg Luzinski and single by Garry Maddox.

Braves 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Ending a six-game losing streak, the Braves scored twice in the 10th inning to defeat the Padres, 3-1. The Padres counted their run in the first on singles by Tito Fuentes and Willie Davis and a forceout by Mike Ivie. Jerry Royster singled to drive in the Braves' tying tally in the seventh. Willie Montanez singled in the 10th and moved up on a sacrifice by Ken Henderson. After an intentional pass to Tom Paciorek, a single by Rod Gilbreath broke the tie. Errors by Hector Torres and Fred Kendall enabled the Braves to add an extra run.

[DH] Expos 7, Cardinals 5 (night game) / Expos 8, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals, after losing the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 7-5, failed to hold a 7-1 lead in the second game and lost again to the Expos, 8-7. In the opener, Lou Brock hit an inside-the-park homer in the fifth inning to give the Cards a 5-4 lead, but the Expos won with a three-run rally in the ninth. Pete Mackanin and Gary Carter led off with singles. Bombo Rivera bunted and forced Mackanin at third. Jose Morales grounded out, but Barry Foote singled, driving in two runs to put the Expos ahead, 6-4. Following an intentional pass to Tim Foli and another walk to Mike Jorgensen, an insurance run scored on a wild pitch by Al Hrabosky. In the nightcap, the Cardinals built up their 7-1 lead at the expense of Gerry Hannahs, who was making his major league debut after coming up from Quebec City (Eastern). But the Cards' defense fell apart in the sixth when the Expos scored five runs on four hits, two walks and three errors. Foli singled in the eighth and scored the tying run on a double by Jorgensen. Morales then doubled for his 22nd pinch-hit of the season to drive in Jorgensen with the deciding run. Joe Kerrigan, who relieved in both games, received credit for his first and second major league victories.
