Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Indians 3 at Baltimore (night game):
An unearned run in the fourth inning proved decisive as the Orioles defeated the Indians, 4-3. The Orioles put together consecutive singles by Reggie Jackson, Lee May and Ken Singleton for a run in the first inning and added two in the second on a single by Andres Mora, double by Paul Blair and single by Bobby Grich. Then in the fourth, Mark Belanger singled, stole second and scored the deciding run on an error by Buddy Bell.

Tigers 1, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
Ben Oglivie smashed a homer in the first inning and that was all the Tigers needed to defeat the Red Sox, 1-0, in a game stopped by rain after five innings.

Angels 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Nolan Ryan struck out 18 batters and yielded only three hits while pitching the Angels to a 3-2 victory over the White Sox. Ryan's strikeout total came within one of the major league record for nine innings which the Angels' fireballer shares with Steve Carlton of the Phillies and Tom Seaver of the Mets. Bruce Bochte homered for the Angels in the second and another run followed in the same stanza on a single by Dave Chalk and double by Andy Etchebarren. The White Sox tied the score in the fifth when Jim Essian walked, Jim Spencer singled and Jorge Orta doubled. The Angels broke the tie in the sixth with a triple by Rusty Torres and double by Bochte.

Twins 18, Royals 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Led by Dan Ford and Larry Hisle, who drove in nine runs between them, the Twins overwhelmed the Royals, 18-3. Ford, who accounted for five RBIs, hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning, homered with a man on base in the fourth and rapped run-scoring singles in the fifth and sixth. Hisle had a sacrifice fly in the first, two-run triple in the fourth and run-scoring grounder for his fourth RBI in the fifth.

Yankees 6, Brewers 4 at New York (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Oscar Gamble capped a five-run outburst in the eighth inning and carried the Yankees to a 6-4 victory over the Brewers. With Dan Thomas hitting his first major league homer, the Brewers held a 2-1 lead before the Yankees exploded. A single by Mickey Rivers and two-out double by Chris Chambliss produced the first run in the rally. Carlos May and Graig Nettles then walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Gamble's jackpot wallop off Jim Slaton. Von Joshua batted in two runs for the Brewers with a double in the ninth.

Rangers 5, A's 4 at Texas (night game):
After the Athletics tied the score with a homer in the ninth inning and went ahead with two circuit clouts in the 10th, the Rangers rallied for three runs to gain a 5-4 victory. Gene Tenace rapped a round-tripper that knotted the count at 2-2. Bert Campaneris and Don Baylor hit homers in the 10th. In the Rangers' half, Vida Blue gave up one run on three hits before leaving the game with one out. Rollie Fingers passed Mike Hargrove intentionally and then walked Dave Moates to force in the second run. After a forceout at the plate, Lenny Randle hit a deep drive to center field and when the ball slipped out of Bill North's glove for a single, the Rangers' winning run scored.

Cubs 3, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Rick Reuschel, who tossed a six-hitter and pitched the Cubs to a 3-2 victory, beat the Phillies for the ninth time in 10 career decisions. The Phillies paired a single by Larry Bowa and double by Mike Schmidt for a run in the first inning, but the Cubs got even in the second with singles by George Mitterwald and Joe Wallis around an infield out by Manny Trillo. Wallis singled again in the fifth, moved up on a grounder by Mick Kelleher and scored on a single by Rick Monday. Bill Madlock then provided the Cubs' deciding run with a homer in the eighth. The Phillies had a chance to pull the game out of the fire in their half but scored only once on a walk to Tim McCarver, single by Dave Cash, sacrifice bunt by Bowa and sacrifice fly by Schmidt.

Expos 4, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Expos put together a pair of two-run innings to defeat the Pirates, 4-2. In the second, Barry Foote doubled and scored on a single by Larry Parrish, who advanced on the throw and crossed the plate on a single by Pete Mackanin. A single by Earl Williams, double by Parrish and wild throw by Frank Taveras added the Expos' other counters in the third. The Pirates had the potential tying runs on base in the ninth, but Woodie Fryman retired pinch-hitter Al Oliver on a grounder to end the game.

Reds 4, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Pete Rose collected a single, double and triple, driving in two runs, to lead the Reds to a 4-1 victory over the Giants. Rose batted in the Reds' first run with his triple in the third inning and accounted for another RBI with his double in the fifth. The Reds added their other tallies in the ninth on a walk, double by Cesar Geronimo and single by pinch-hitter Mike Lum. Bob Knepper was the Giants' loser in his first major league start.

Mets 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The Mets converted a double steal into two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Cardinals, 4-3. Pepe Mangual led off with a single and stopped at second on a single by John Stearns. With Roy Staiger at bat, Mangual and Stearns worked a double steal. Third baseman Hector Cruz had rushed in expecting a bunt, and when shortstop Garry Templeton failed to cover the bag, catcher Ted Simmons' throw went into left field, allowing both Mangual and Stearns to score, putting the Mets ahead, 4-1. The runs became earned when Staiger followed with a single. Mickey Lolich, who started for the Mets, was hit on the left elbow by John Denny in the seventh. Skip Lockwood was knocked out in the ninth when the Cardinals rallied for two runs before Bob Apodaca saved the game for the Mets.
