Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 1, Tigers 0 at Baltimore (night game):
A homer by Andres Mora enabled Wayne Garland to pitch the Orioles to a 1-0 victory over the Tigers in a game stopped by rain after six innings. Mora's blow in the third inning pinned the defeat on Dave Roberts. Garland allowed only two hits, including a single by Rusty Staub for the 2,000th hit of the outfielder's major league career.

Angels 2, Royals 1 at California (night game):
Pinch-hitter Tommy Davis delivered a run-scoring single in the ninth inning to give the Angels a 2-1 victory over the slipping Royals, whose lead in the West Division race was cut to 3½ games over the Athletics. Nolan Ryan yielded the Royals' run in the sixth when Fred Patek singled, stole second and scored on a single by Tom Poquette. The Angels tied the score against Doug Bird in the seventh on singles by Dan Briggs and Tony Solaita and a sacrifice fly by Bruce Bochte. The Angels opened the ninth with singles by Dave Collins and Briggs sandwiched around a forceout by Jerry Remy. Steve Mingori relieved and passed Rusty Torres. Mark Littell then took the mound and on his first pitch Davis rapped his game-winning single.

Rangers 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
After hitting a homer in the sixth inning, Toby Harrah singled in the eighth to spark the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. Harrah's homer broke a 1-1 tie. The Rangers then added two runs in the eighth with the first marker counting on singles by Harrah, Mike Hargrove and Jeff Burroughs. After a pass to Roy Howell, an infield out by Lenny Randle accounted for the winning run.

Yankees 2, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Posting his third shutout of the season, Doyle Alexander allowed only four hits and pitched the Yankees to a 2-0 victory over the Indians. The Yankees settled Alexander's duel with Rick Waits by scoring a run in the first inning on a single by Thurman Munson and double by Lou Piniella. Munson drove in the other run with an infield out in the eighth for his 97th RBI of the season.

Red Sox 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Butch Hobson homered after a single by Jim Rice in the fifth inning to provide the Red Sox with a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. Reggie Cleveland limited the Brewers to four hits but needed last-out help from Tom Murphy to nail down the decision. The Brewers' run came in the third on a pass to Tim Johnson, a sacrifice and error by Cecil Cooper.

A's 5, Twins 2 at Oakland (night game):
A five-run rally in the eighth inning, fashioned with four hits, a walk, hit batsman and four stolen bases, enabled the Athletics to defeat the Twins, 5-2. Jim Hughes, who started for the Twins, yielded only three hits before the roof fell in. Gene Tenace drew a walk to start the rally and gave way to Larry Lintz, who stole second. Ron Fairly, making his first appearance with the A's, rapped a pinch-single, scoring Lintz. Matt Alexander ran for Fairly and stole second. After an infield hit by Phil Garner, Alexander counted on a forceout by Ken McMullen. Bill North followed with a single and Claudell Washington was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Don Baylor capitalized on the opportunity with a single, driving in two runs. Baylor stole second and Washington then stole home with the final run of the outburst.

Astros 4, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Bob Watson had a perfect night at the plate with four hits and drove in three runs to lead the Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Braves. Watson batted in the Astros' initial run with a single in the first inning. The Braves tied the score in their half and went ahead in the fourth when Brian Asselstine's sacrifice fly and Dale Murphy's double helped account for two runs. The Astros rallied to win with three runs in the sixth. Watson knocked in the first two with a single and later crossed the plate with the deciding run on an error by Rob Belloir.

Reds 4, Dodgers 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pete Rose rapped four hits and Tony Perez added three to lead the Reds' attack in a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers. Pat Zachry, who was the winner with help from Rawly Eastwick, became the first pitcher to beat the Dodgers five times without a defeat in one season since Larry Jaster of the Cardinals accomplished the feat in 1968. Eastwick gained his 23rd save. The Reds tore into Al Downing for three runs in the third inning on a single by Rose, double by Ken Griffey, single by Joe Morgan, sacrifice fly by George Foster and double by Perez. Another double by Perez drove in what proved to be the deciding run in the seventh. Reggie Smith homered for the Dodgers.

Cubs 2, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Ray Burris pitched a five-hitter and came out the winner in a duel with Steve Rogers when the Cubs scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to defeat the Expos, 2-0. Mick Kelleher led off the stanza with a single and Burris sacrificed. After Rick Monday struck out, Joe Wallis grounded to Earl Williams, who threw wildly to Rogers covering first, to allow Kelleher to score on the error. Wallis took second and crossed the plate when Bill Madlock doubled.

[DH] Cardinals 7, Mets 0 (night game) / Cardinals 4, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
The Cardinals swept a doubleheader for the first time this season, beating the Mets in a twi-night affair, 7-0 and 4-1. John Denny posted the shutout on a four-hitter. Joe Ferguson hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career and drove in a fifth run with a single. The catcher's jackpot wallop came off Mickey Lolich in the third inning after Denny beat out a bunt and both Garry Templeton and Keith Hernandez walked. Mike Anderson added a homer in the eighth. John Curtis was the route-going winner in the nightcap. The Cards put the game away with three runs in the third inning on doubles by Templeton and Hernandez and singles by Hector Cruz and Don Kessinger.

Pirates 7, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Bill Robinson and Richie Zisk each hit his 20th homer of the season and Dave Parker added his 11th as the Pirates powered their way to a 7-2 victory to pull within five games of the Phillies in the East Division race. Robinson connected following a single by Parker in the second inning. Zisk's homer, plus a double by Willie Stargell and single by Parker, made it 4-0 in the third. The Phillies picked up their pair in the fourth when Mike Schmidt walked and Dick Allen homered, but the Pirates counted twice in the eighth on a double by Parker, single by Robinson and double by Tommy Helms before Parker wrapped up the scoring with his circuit clout in the ninth.

Giants 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Frank Riccelli gained his first major league victory at the expense of Randy Jones when the Giants defeated the Padres, 2-1. Jones, the Padres' 21-game winner who absorbed his 13th loss, gave up the Giants' first run on a homer by Bobby Murcer in the fourth inning. The Padres knotted the count in the fifth and the tie persisted until the eighth when Larry Herndon batted for Riccelli and beat out a bunt on a disputed play. Jack Clark sacrificed and with two out Gary Matthews doubled to drive in the winning run.
