Today's scores and summaries:
Royals 2, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Marty Pattin pitched a five-hitter and got batting support from Buck Martinez, his catcher, who hit a two-run homer to enable the Royals to defeat the Angels, 2-0. The Royals had only one hit off Frank Tanana until two out in the seventh inning when Fred Patek doubled and Martinez connected for the circuit.
Rangers 5, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
Lenny Randle, who reached base four times with a triple, single and two walks, batted in one run and scored three to pace the Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the White Sox. Mike Hargrove rapped a pair of run-scoring singles, while Jim Sundberg had a double and two singles and crossed the plate twice. Bucky Dent drove in all the White Sox runs, one with a single in the fifth inning and three with a double in the ninth.
Red Sox 4, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
For the second successive night, Butch Hobson smashed a game-winning homer for the Red Sox, who defeated the Brewers, 4-3. In the previous night's contest, the rookie third baseman came up with a man on base in the fifth inning and homered to give the Red Sox a 2-1 victory. This time, Hobson whacked his winning blow with Cecil Cooper aboard in the ninth. All Brewer runs came on round-trippers. Dan Thomas hit a solo swat in the fourth and George Scott connected for the circuit following a double by Charlie Moore in the seventh.
Twins 4, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Dan Ford smashed a pair of two-run homers and Bill Singer threw a four-hitter as the Twins gained a 4-0 victory to drop the Athletics 4½ games behind the Royals in the West Division race. Ford's first shot followed a single by Rod Carew in the fourth inning and his second drive came after a single by Lyman Bostock in the sixth.
Braves 5, Astros 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Jim Wynn homered as a pinch-hitter for the third time this season and Dave May knocked in two runs with a triple in an eighth-inning rally that brought the Braves a 5-3 victory over the Astros. After Wynn delivered his blow as the substitute batter for Phil Niekro, Jerry Royster singled, Rod Gilbreath sacrificed and Willie Montanez was passed intentionally, setting the stage for May's three-bagger. May also scored himself on a balk by Joaquin Andujar.
Reds 4, Dodgers 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Don Gullett, making his fourth start for the Reds since being idled for one month by a shoulder injury, turned in his first complete game since June 10 and beat the Dodgers, 4-2, for his second straight victory. The lefthander gave up the Dodgers' runs, one of them unearned, in the second inning. The Reds took the lead against Doug Rau with three runs in the fourth, two scoring on a single by Cesar Geronimo. Gullett iced his decision with an RBI single in the sixth. With the victory, the Reds expanded their lead over the Dodgers to 12 games and reduced their magic number to four for clinching the West Division title.
Expos 4, Cubs 3 at Montreal (day game):
Jose Morales set two major league records for pinch-hitters when the Expos' clutch batter came up in the seventh inning and drove in three runs with a double to defeat the Cubs, 4-3. The pinch-hit was Morales' 25th of the season, breaking the record of 24 by Dave Philley with the Orioles in 1961 and Vic Davalillo with the Cardinals in 1970. The time at bat as a pinch-hitter was his 74th, one more than Davalillo's mark with the Cards in '70. Tim Foli led off the seventh with a double. After advancing on an infield out, Foli escaped a rundown on a grounder by Gary Carter and returned safe to third while Carter reached second on the play. The Cubs then passed Andre Dawson intentionally before Morales batted for reliever Steve Dunning and rapped his double. As a consequence, Larry Landreth, who pitched shutout ball over the first six innings and left with a 1-0 lead, was able to get credit for the victory in his major league debut.
Mets 4, Cardinals 1 at New York (night game):
Jerry Koosman pitched the Mets to a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals and became a 20-game winner for the first time in his major league career. The lefthander, who allowed four hits, struck out 13 for an N. L. high this season. Bruce Boisclair homered for the Mets as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and, after remaining in the game, drove in another run with a single in the eighth. Keith Hernandez deprived Koosman of a shutout by hitting for the circuit in the eighth.
Pirates 7, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
With two out in the ninth inning, Rennie Stennett drove in a run with a double to account for a 7-6 victory and pull the Pirates within four games of the Phillies in the East Division race. Bill Robinson drove in four runs for the Pirates with a three-run homer in the second inning and added an RBI with a single in the third. Willie Stargell then made it 5-0 with a circuit clout in the fifth. After a rain delay of one hour, 22 minutes, the Phillies came back in their half of the fifth and knocked out Jerry Reuss during a three-run rally. Dave Cash drove in two tallies with a bases-loaded single and Greg Luzinski produced the third run with a single off reliever Bob Moose. Larry Bowa tripled and Bobby Tolan singled for another Phillies' run in the sixth. The Pirates tacked on a tally in the seventh when Frank Taveras singled and Stennett doubled, but the Phillies rallied to tie the score in their half when Bob Boone singled to drive in Luzinski and Tim McCarver. In the Pirates' ninth, Duffy Dyer was hit by a pitch. Miguel Dilone ran for Dyer and, after a sacrifice by Omar Moreno, Stennett hit his second double of the game to supply the winning run.
