Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 11, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Breaking a close game apart, the Twins scored four runs in the seventh inning and added four more in the ninth to defeat the Angels, 11-2. Larry Hisle homered with a man on base in the second and the Twins added a run in the fourth before the Angels picked up their pair. The Twins then erupted in the seventh with two runs scoring on a single by Dan Ford and another on a single by Hisle for his third RBI of the game. A double by Steve Braun and single by Roy Smalley each produced two of the Twins' four runs in the ninth.

Red Sox 8, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Luis Tiant gained his 19th victory and ninth in his last 10 decisions with batting support from Rick Burleson, Carl Yastrzemski and Butch Hobson, who drove in two runs apiece as the Red Sox defeated the Tigers, 8-3. Jim Rice added a homer to the Red Sox scoring. Mark Fidrych, who started for the Tigers, lasted only 2 2/3 innings before making his earliest exit in 26 appearances this season. The Red Sox picked up a run in each of the first two stanzas and then chased Fidrych during a five-run outburst in the third. Two homers, one by Willie Horton with a man on base and the other by Ben Oglivie, accounted for the Tiger tallies.

Royals 3, White Sox 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Backed by George Brett, who drove in all of the Royals' runs, Dennis Leonard defeated the White Sox, 3-2, but it took an outstanding catch by Tom Poquette in the ninth inning to save the victory. Jim Wohlford and Poquette singled and Brett hit a sacrifice fly to produce the Royals' initial run in the first inning. Another single by Wohlford, a stolen base and infield outs by Poquette and Brett added a run in the third. Fred Patek singled in the seventh, stole second and scored the deciding run on a single by Brett. The White Sox loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Poquette made a shoestring grab of a looper by Bill Stein along the right field line and Bucky Dent grounded out to end the game.

Yankees 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The crowd of 40,383 at "Salute to Hank Aaron Night" suffered two disappointments when Aaron not only went hitless in five trips, but the Brewers also lost to the Yankees, 5-3, in 11 innings. George Scott drove in the Brewers' runs, hitting a homer in the first inning and accounting for two RBIs with a single in the sixth. Lou Piniella figured in the first three Yankee runs. After batting in one with a single in the first, Piniella tripled and scored on a single by Chris Chambliss in the fourth. Then in the ninth Piniella singled and gave way to pinch-runner Larry Murray, who subsequently counted the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Elliott Maddox. Graig Nettles smashed the deadlock in the 11th with his 27th homer of the season. The Yankees went on to add an insurance run on singles by Maddox and Fred Stanley and a squeeze bunt by Willie Randolph.

Rangers 4, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Gaylord Perry gave up 10 hits and walked three but pitched the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Athletics, who fell 5½ games off the pace of the Royals in the West Division race. Roy Howell batted in two runs for the Rangers with a double in the third inning and their other tallies counted in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Gene Clines and single by Tom Grieve. The A's, who had stolen 320 bases this season, ran themselves out of a possible victory in the seventh inning when they collected three hits and a walk, yet failed to score. Bert Campaneris led off with a single and was thrown out trying to steal second. Bill North followed with a single and also was nabbed in an attempt to pilfer second. Claudell Washington then walked and Don Baylor singled, but Perry retired Joe Rudi on a roller to end the threat.

[DH] Braves 1, Dodgers 0 (night game) / Dodgers 11, Braves 7 at Atlanta (night game):
A wild pitch by Charlie Hough in the 12th inning and a passed ball on the next delivery by the knuckleball reliever enabled the Braves to gain a 1-0 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Dodgers won the second game, 11-7. Don Sutton, bidding for his 20th victory, pitched the first 11 innings of the opener for the Dodgers before turning the mound over to Hough. Tom Paciorek greeted the change with a single, took second on a sacrifice by Brian Asselstine and advanced to third on Hough's wild pitch. Hough then served up a knuckleball to Darrel Chaney and when the pitch got away from catcher Ellie Rodriguez, Paciorek scored the winning run. In the nightcap, Ted Sizemore batted in five runs for the Dodgers, accounting for two with a triple in the fourth, walking with the bases loaded in the sixth and driving in two runs with a single in the ninth.

Cubs 4, Phillies 3 at Chicago (day game):
After saving the Phillies from defeat in the ninth inning, Larry Bowa turned around and committed an error in the 12th that enabled the Cubs to gain a 4-3 victory. The loss was the third straight for the Phils and 18th in their last 23 games. The Phillies went into the ninth on the short end of a 3-1 score, but rallied to pull even. Jay Johnstone doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Bob Boone. Jerry Martin ran for Boone and scored the tying run when Bowa tripled. However in the 12th, Bowa, battling the wind and sun, dropped a pop fly by Champ Summers, who reached second on the error. After Mick Kelleher popped up, Ron Reed walked Joe Wallis intentionally. Failing to relocate the plate, Reed also passed Pete LaCock. Jerry Morales then singled to drive in Summers with the Cubs' winning run.

Giants 4, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pete Rose singled in the fifth inning to reach 200 hits for the eighth season in his major league career, but the Reds lost to the Giants, 4-2. Jim Barr, with the aid of Randy Moffitt, who relieved in the eighth, beat the Reds for the fourth time this year. The Giants, who had a homer by Marty Perez, built up a 3-0 lead before the Reds posted their pair in the eighth on singles by Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan, a double by Tony Perez and sacrifice fly by George Foster. The Giants pulled away with an insurance run in the ninth on a single by Gary Thomasson and double by Chris Speier.

Expos 9, Cardinals 5 at Montreal (day game):
Wayne Garrett drove in two runs with a homer and Andre Dawson accounted for two with a triple to lead the Expos to a 9-5 victory over the Cardinals. Garrett's round-tripper tied the score at 2-2 in the second inning. Garry Templeton, the Cards' rookie shortstop, committed three errors, one with one out in the third, leading to four unearned runs for the Expos. Del Unser was safe on Templeton's boot and scored on singles by Mike Jorgensen and Ellis Valentine. Dawson followed with his triple and crossed the plate himself on a single by Gary Carter. Gerry Hannahs gained credit for his first major league victory. Jerry Mumphrey and Hector Cruz homered for the Cardinals.

Pirates 4, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
The Pirates pulled within three games of the slipping Phillies in the East Division race by defeating the Mets, 4-1. Doc Medich was the winner, but Dave Giusti saved the game, snuffing out a threat after the Mets scored their run on singles by Mike Phillips, Lee Mazzilli and Felix Millan in the eighth inning. The Pirates counted initially in the second on consecutive singles by Willie Stargell, Dave Parker and Bill Robinson. Richie Hebner singled, Duffy Dyer doubled and Frank Taveras singled for two runs in the fifth. The Pirates' final marker counted in the ninth. Robinson led off with a double, advanced after Hebner flied out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dyer.
